Moving to Doha...any advise?

IvanMar
By IvanMar

Hi guys! I was wondering if any of you can help me. The company where I worked for has offer for me and my girlfriend a job in Doha but I am a little bit concern about a few things:
1.- Do we need to get married if we want to live together?
2.- On top of our salary, they offer us a living allowance of 7.500QR, is this enough for a 1 bedroom apartment or studio?
3.- How is the live in doha for a woman?

I am looking forward for your answer.

Thank you very much for all the information you can give me

I think its important that people know the truth when they are looking to come here. While I don't regret making the decision to come I didn't really relise how much of myself i would loose. Where i am from I can be a certain way act a certain way and think nothing of it and nobody else does for that matter. Here I have had to restrain myself almost be somebody else less I get thrown in jail and deported. This is why i suggest to Ivanmar and anyone else if they money is not being offered seriously think about it.

Thank you Mis-Cat, I really appreciate your honesty. It´s great, I prefer to ear the truth before taking the decision. But you know how it´s, I just feel it´s time to move and do something new. Now both of us have this opportunity and we were thinking to try for a year, then we can always come back to Spain. But of course if I put everything on the table...I must say it doesn´t look as a very good deal though

Bakamuna - I think the average Salary is around QR 40,000 + Car + school fees + luxury living is the standard for certain QLer's here:(

By Mis-Cat• 7 Jun 2008 18:15
Mis-Cat

Sorry for the hijack before, but getting back to your question, coming here for the experiance alone FORGET IT! sorry to put it so bluntly but if you are not getting paid any better than in spain don't do it. Considering were you are from and were you are living now the freedom that you have to somewhat give up to live here for what they are offering is not worth it.

By anonymous• 7 Jun 2008 18:15
anonymous

How can you judge cost of living by comparing a meal at a posh restaurant.

FYI - I spend QR 5.00 everymorning that consists of 3 porota & a Chicken Curry. I am not dead yet by eating that :)

By IvanMar• 7 Jun 2008 18:13
IvanMar

So fatcat, do you think will be not enough to live with 9000QR for two people?

By Fatcat• 7 Jun 2008 18:12
Fatcat

You won't get experience here - most people here do not have great experience anyway, that's why they hire expats that will hopefully bring their experience. But even a lot of the expats do not have the necessary experience. So you end up not learning much here.

Cost of living is not that cheap here.

For example, if you drink at all you'll pay QR6 for one beer at QDC (the only place you can buy alcohol from). If you're having the same beer at a hotel, I think you'll pay about QR25. I stand to be corrected on the price of beer as I've only had wine. For a glass of red I paid QR50. Yes, for one glass!

I went to Macaroni Grill (an American restaurant) and paid QR130 for a main course and a desert.

The Indian joint near my flat charges QR14 for one meal plus QR2 for delivery.

By anonymous• 7 Jun 2008 18:08
anonymous

FYI - I have their exclusive permissions OK.

By IvanMar• 7 Jun 2008 18:07
IvanMar

Well, now I am living in Spain, so I earn Euros, more than they are offering at the moment, but we were thinking that it can be a good experience and that maybe we can live and safe a little bit of money, however I see you said it´s not enough. If houses are that expensive maybe it´s not going to be a very good idea

By anonymous• 7 Jun 2008 18:06

No Car no Problem. Bus stop is right at the door step :)

and add another 2000-3000 to get her Doha Luxary apartment and live on thin air :)

Really?? I heard the live in Doha was not that expensive apart from the house...what as far as I see is very, very expensive but I though food was cheap.

By Fatcat• 7 Jun 2008 18:03

IvanMar, if you want to rent a car you'll pay QR1800 per month (that's how much I'm paying) for Chevrolet Aveo.

Do you earn significantly less than that currently? If yes, then go for it. If not, I'd think twice before moving here.

Thank you very much for all your comments, that´s great! now I have a idea of how it is, by the way some of you ask for my nationality, I am from Argentina and my girlfriend is Spanish. The place where we will work is located in West Bay, my girlfriend will have a company car but I will not have one and we will have diferent shift so I gues I would have to rent one of this limos people talk about in the chat.

One more question, apart of the 7500QR for living allowance, our salary will be like 9000QR (both salaries together) will be that enough to live with out worries?

Thank you again for your help!

You do not need to organize anything.. I know one simple thing.. if two items are on the market, and they are the same quality, their price is about the same... If one of items twice as cheap as another, there is something hidden there. It is that simple. How come 2-br flat in Beverly Hills tower is QR 16,000 and in your “tower” is 7500? Are owners idiots to give away their "high quality" property for half price, if it's possible to rent it for 12000-16000??

I don' t know how did you get this flat, who did pay for it, what quality is it.. but I think there are no benefactors when it comes to money...

Oh, listen I know one girl, she lives in Bev.Hills and pays.. 1000 QR for 2 br flat (mostly utilities, internet, service and such)…… does it mean everybody pay as little????? Not at all .. this is HER case....oh, and you know why does she pay only 1000? Because the rest her BF pays.. may be you are the same case, who knows?

Ivanmar, bottom line is if you want to live in Doha (not Wakra, Doha) it will cost you more than QR7.5k a month for a 2 bedroom flat. With QR7.5k you may get a 1 bedroom, but it's not that easy. I was looking for accommodation 2 months ago and I'm talking out of my own experience. This being Doha, I do not believe prices would have fallen. If you want a fancy building, a friend of mine tells me that in his building it'll cost QR16k for a 1 bedroom (4 seasons or something like that if I'm not mistaken).

It amazes me how some people make it look like a piece of cake finding a reasonably priced flat. It's not.

There is no way it would take no more than 30 minutes. It takes 20 to 30 minutes from Grand Hamad to City Centre at 7am. So from Wakra it has to take longer.

it doesn't matter how long it takes to reach Doha: 2 minutes or 2 hours .. Doha and Wakra are two different cities.. at least so far...so better if you specify: i am staying out of Doha in nice coumpound in 2br flat for 7000.. everything ir clear.

There is no way you will find a decent 2 bedrooms in Doha (not Wakra) for less than QR8000. More likely QR8.5k or QR9.5k. One bedrooms are hard to come by. And when they do, you'll pay only about QR1k less than a 2 bedroom.

I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle..

Deep, I doubt that you can find 2br flat in compaund with all the facilities that you described for 7000... no,I do not doubt, i am sure you cannot find it. May be you Deep keep this price since few years ago, then yes...OR it is OUT of Doha...

But of course you do not really need 8500 for 1br flat. you can find nice 1 br flat for 6500-7500. Even you can find a small 2 br flat for 7500.. but again, it depends on the area and the quality of the building...

regarding marriage.. yes, you have to be married in order to live together as a family...

Hey there! Qatar is not a bad place at all. It is not at all like Saudia Arabia. Women have complete liberty and freedom to lead their lives. They can work in any profession, wear whatever they want and drive too.

I am not too sure though about the living arrangemnt though. Don't know if you and your girlfriend can live together without getting married. I guess it all depends on your nationality, where are you from?
