Sense Check: Cost of living calculation

Hi folks,

I am a Brit looking to make the move to Doha later in 2012 - have an offer in hand. I am trying to calculate likely monthly outgoing and would appreciate a sense check on my assumptions.

We are a family of 4, with 2 sons aged 9 months and 3 years. The company will pay for education, and provide health/dental cover, housing, utility, car and fuel. The rest I estimated as follows:

Food: QAR 5,500 / month
Going out: QAR 1,800 / month
Clothing / Misc: QAR 1,800 / month
Maid: QAR 1,800 / month

Thanks.

We spend about £200 a week on shopping. Its amazing how costs rack up when you have children.

When it was just my wife and I, we spent less than half this amount. I still remember weekly shopping for around £50.

Hopefully there is scope to cut down on shopping costs in Qatar, but am planning for the worst case.

£450/month (QAR 2,500) for going out does seem excessive.

hi guys, i just wanted to know if these costs are right? Its estimated QR 5,500 for food and QR 2500 for a weekend.

I live with my partner in london and would never spend anywhere near QR 5,500 (£900) or QR 2,500 (£450)a month on these things.

Are the prices extremely high (much higher than London) or are people just on a different standard of living?

thank you

You will need at least QR 2500/- per month for your weekend break.

Things to do at the weekend to keep the kids entertained; I dont know what there is in Doha. Also go to a restaurant once a week and maybe to the movies every other week or so. Main thing is interesting things for our two sons.

Libra11; yes, thats standard practice in oil and gas industry. Thanks for the reply. The topic I was most dubious on was the cost of a maid.
