My husband and I are about to sign up to live and work in Qatar.

Your shopping list will be a great help, I am sure it can be easliy updated by anyone with rudamentary knowledge of Exel, adding a column with a percentage increase for uptodate figures. Moonbeam has done the groundwork.

Great help thank you

Qureshi........................ :(  I didn't make this list to make your personal life easier.......................   I made it to help people in general.  You seriously need to wake up and smell the roses dear.

To the rest of the world interested in this excel sheet, be warned that it is seriously out of date.  I made this comparison 2 years ago!!!!

Since then prices have sky rocketed and I'm sorry, but I manage a charity website and have no time to go around and find prices all over again.

So please, stop sending me requests to send you updated prices, I really can't do it.

If on the other hand someone wants to adopt a dog or cat, well then YES get in touch with me!

For American like me who will be moving to Doha in one week this is too much. First you have to convert Kg to Lbs, liter to gallons then you have to convert Qatar currency to US Dollars to get some feelings of grocery expenses.

This list was made more than a year ago in APRIL 2006, and due to inflation the prices are very different today, so please take that into account.

I don't have time to update it now, it took me a while to do the one that is posted here. I will get to it one day hopefully.

Good luck

I'm speedy-niqaabi, 28 years of age and married and mother of 3 kids.

Currently I'm still living in Holland, but my husband is applying for a job in the middle-east. In qatar at the moment. So I'm gaining as much info as I can get about the middle-east in general en Qatar in specific. So I hope to get some info here ;)

I wish I could help you, but other than the Bic mac meal and coffee at starbucks evertything else on the list pretty much varies.

I initially made this list almost a year ago. Since then prices have gone up. I don't have time to update it yet. Maybe soon. I am still trying to get the rest of my life organised. :)

However, if anyone else wants to add anything useful to this post (not like naramis) then please do so.

I must admit, I don't really compare the prices when I do my grocery shopping, I just notice if the total is significantly bigger for a comparable shop in a different supermarket chain.

So what about the cost of every day things that are quite easy to compare? Say, like a 'Big Mac'-type index? I don't eat Big Macs either, but I'm guessing most people will know the prices of the following things back home and will be able to compare it with the cost in Qatar.

How much are the following in Qatar?

* Big Mac Meal

* Coffee in Starbucks

* A small bottle of water/a can of pop (soda?) from a shop

* Lunch on a work day (do you have a meal or sandwiches?)

* Cinema ticket (adult)

* Takeaway meal/meal delivery (something like Domino Pizza)

* Average meal in an okay restaurant, not a special occasion, but during the week when you can't be bothered cooking (per person)

* Meal in a nicer restaurant, make a bit of an effort

* A pint of beer/glass of wine/gin & tonic in a bar/club

* An hour in an internet cafe

* A CD (new/recent release)

* A DVD (new/recent release)

Can anyone else think of any easily comparable items to add to the list?

I think you are right. I have been noticing price increases all over the place, from local to imported items. Here it is seems much less controlled, than in Europe for example. Basically individual shops choose the price they want to display. I don't know if it has to do with the asian games, but judging by a similar trend I saw in bahrain when the gulf war broke out (and insurance was over the roof) I can guarantee the prices won't drop afterwards.

Good luck with your move. I'm a little bogged down with alot to do, so I haven't had a chance to finish of the new prices yet, sorry.

Cheers.

Thanks Moonbeam, this was really helpful, I am planing to shift to Qatar in March end, it is really helpful, actually now I am in Abu Dhabi, looks like Qatar is costly by 5 to 10% except Milk all looks expensive. Is it due to Asian games which starts in December, or is it generally so.

Best wishes. God Bless you

Anyway, when I'm satisfied, I'll post it for all to see. Anyone that's intersted in the old version for the time being, can find it already on qatarliving to dowload in Excel format.

Hi Moonbeam,

fantastic. Thank you.

Now I know how much QR I will have to spend, to fill up the kitchen / refrigerator with items when I arrive on 01st August 2006.

This kind of information is terrific.

I don´t have a problem with landlords, the company will handle that. Villa -> compound.

So that is something for me not to worry about. I´m in a lucky position, compared to others.

I won´t take my motorbike with me, what I have read is, that this is a very unsafe way to travel.

Looking forward to see this town and to meet the people who live and work in Qatar.

I will have enough time to settle down, what it means to live and work for a longer period here in Qatar.

My assignment will end 2013, then it goes back home -> Hamburg / Germany.

Thanks, Otto

Thanks Gumbo, Ayman and Lili! My pleasure. Mind you I shouldn't get 'that' much credit :) I edited a previous list which I found....... I don't know where, and made it show averages to make it easier to read that's all.

Aymen, honestly I'm not sure you'de be very interested, it's mainly for us women. Shopping lists, templates for household inventory, budgeting templaet etc. Are you sure? I can send it to you, but you'de probably find it boring. Let me know.

Gumbo, I'm sure there are health food stores in Doha, but the places like "Vitamin Cottage' etc don't exist. The Middle East has most of their fresh produce imported from Europe, and the stuff grown locally (Egypt, Saudi etc) probably does not have stringent controls on the use of pesticides. So it's either starve or east what you get sorta thing :)

By Gumbo• 14 Apr 2006 16:08
Gumbo

Does anyone how "healthy" the food and water is in Doha? Do they add pesticides and hormones to the food supply? Is there some sort of organic food available and what would be the cost? From my limited knowledge, the local food is not subjected such things?
