Hire a porter at the carrousel - if you really want to make him happy, pay him 20 or 30 USD - he'll make sure your bags are handled well.

Hi all, and thanks for the comments. My flight originates on United, and United cargo says they don't work with individuals but that I would instead have to contract with a private company to send anything via their cargo. So, even if Qatar Airways might accept my cargo, United, it seems, will not. Sooo, I have talked to United about just bringing a heck of a lot of extra luggage on and paying extra luggage fees. I find that for the (small) amount of stuff I am bringing to Doha, paying extra luggage fees is cheaper than sending with any company I've spoken to (North American, ShipSmart, FedEx). So, thought it'll be a pain in the bum to get through the airport when I arrive, I think I will just bring a lot of extra luggage, and save some money this way.

Your best bet is to contact Qatar Airways Cargo. They have pretty much fixed rates from USA to Doha. Be sure not to include certain items to avoid hassle and losses such as media devices (CD, movies, DVD), food, and medicine. I have done it with Qatar Airways but the other way around (exporting from Qatar).

I am surprised the airline will not help, have you tried contacting Qatar Airways Cargo? I have not used them, but it seems they should help.

Call the airline (United), it's straightforward and can be done quite efficiently.

Try here.. though I know they're heavy movers, you can call them (or any mover) and request them to refer you movers who deal with moving a lesser cargo.(this is not personally endorsed by me, but I know some people who had given the name of this mover)

I am bringing quite a small amount (150-200lbs) of personal effects. I have just spoken to one company and they've declined my shipment, saying it's too small for their operations. I will check with others. If that continues to be the case, is it reasonable to talk to DHL or FedEx about arranging a shipment?

The unaccompanied baggage allowance will be for a limited amount of weight for you, based on the company standards.

You will have to approach a well known cargo service in the USA, and keep all the effects ready to be shipped such that they arrive here only after you arrive in Qatar.

It will be better to approach a reputed international cargo company rather than mail, as the personal effects will be dealt with a bit better.

Once you approach the Intl. cargo agent, they will (and should) guide you on the customs procedures and necessary documentation.

You may have to retain the Airway Bill so that you can claim the same from Qatar Airways cargo office, in case such an arrangement is made.
