Driving?

Hi,
Preparing to move to Qatar in the summer and was just wondering-how long do you need to have had a full driving license before you can drive in Qatar? I only passed my driving test about 6 months ago, but ideally want to get a car after about 6 months in Qatar. Any advice/information on this would be greatly appreciated, cheers :)

You'll find you need a car right away out here as there is virtually no public transport in Qatar, save taxi's.

Despite what people say, however, the driving out here isn't too bad, as long as you know the local "rules". Basically anything in a 4x4 (normally a white landcruiser) and that looks local, has right of way in every situation, tends to not use their indicators, will under / over take at any opportunity, and drive through junctions / lights / round-abouts without looking. Know that and it's plain sailing. Driving in London is far worse. ;-)

And you will probably be needing a car after 6 minutes in Doha, not 6 months!!

BTW, if you thought it was difficult driving back home, wait till you get here ... it's scary!

1 day is sufficient for a UK license :o)
