HOW TO BEHAVE AND WHAT TO WEAR???

arIYIana
By arIYIana

Hey everybody,

I'm new on this forum so first of all I'd like to introduce myself. I'm 24 years old, east-european girl from Macedonia. I've recently found a job in Qatar in a italian restaurant Bice (in Doha), so I'm supposed to move there after a month. I would really appreciate if you can help me with some advices regarding how one yound blond blue-eyed girl should behave and what to wear once I am in Qatar :S Not that I'm afraid or have some prejudices or so, but how do not get the attention of the men there and not to get in some trouble :S Pls write anything that u think could help. And I'd really want to hear the opinion of the foreign women in qatar, aswell the native women :) and native men aswell :)

Thank you in advance,

Aleksandra

Hmm, Kalil you are faced with a problem as anything you say may upset her.

All you have to tell her is that it is not allowed (which it is posted on the mall entrances that one must dress decently). ____________________________________________________

Hi Zayd, i got the similar question regarding proper clothes to wear. i have a girlfriend wants to buy miniskirts for her to wear there in Qatar of which i find it uncomfortable. It allowed right? but i think it would also get some serious attentions to the one looking at it. What would be the best way to tell her about it? If I may ask my friend. Thanks

arIYIana, there are expat wives who wouldn't get out of bed for what you are being offered. You will doubtless be working long hours, and will barely have an evening free.

From the link you gave, it looks like an upscale restaurant, paying downscale wages.

You really need to be doubling what they are offering to make life pleasant here.

What is the position you are coming for as I can't see them employing European waitresses!?!?!?

Did you Google it first?

Ha, I have Gypsy on my mind at the moment, how she referred to Rana on QBS as a muppett LMAO. That has been stuck in my head for weeks.

Ariyiana, the offer is not the best, as you can read from the posts on this thread but you should also think whether this exposure will help you with your career or not.

Hotel staff get paid QR 1,000 (lodging and food are company provided) and they can still have a blast! Take it as a new experience.

You may meet a nice man, get married and move away from here, you may end up hating it here so bad you go back home, or you may love it and never want to leave. It is a gamble we all took when we came here.

Trust me, you will like it here.. Qatar is a very open and liberal country, dont be scared ;)

the only reason i could see for you to accept the offer is if you're not satisfied with your life now and desperately need a change or if it's a step in the right direction career-wise...if the case isn't either then you really should negotiate hard or just let it go, better opportunities will come up in the future :)

You know that Karwa drivers only make QR 1,200 a month? I was shocked but unfortunatly there are salaries out there less than this.

It all depends on the individuals situation in their home country. For waitstaff, QR 2,600 is pretty standard for newcomers.

2600 is not enough. negotiate for a better offer...start out by asking for 7000 and try to settle on 5000...or even higher if possible. anyway, 2600 is not enough. you would be able to survive though but it won't be a glamorous life by any stretch of the imagination.

QR 2,600 is pretty low, but you can survive if all else is paid, just dont bank on saving anything or having much of a social life.

The temp can drop to 10 degrees in the winter, I dont think you will need boots or an extrememly warm winter jacket, but you can google the weather questions.

Hi, Welcome to the site. I am female working at Ras Laffan Industrial City, I have worked in Qatar now for 13 months.

Be modest in your dress, no shoulders or cleavage showing at work for sure, skirts (below the kneee, pants etc are great). For the most part I never wear anything above my elbow or knee at work. Shorts are ok on the Corniche but wear knee length shorts if possible, only wear bathing attire at hotels, never on the corniche.

Just wear what you feel comfortable in but be modest..

Skirt to the knees or trousers & shoulders covered (no vest tops) should see you alright in public. I'm sure the restaurant will have a dress code so ask them what you should wear to work.

Let me start by welcoming you to Qatar Living. This site has many helpful contributors that will more than gladly support you and answer any questions you have.

this seems to be a major concern with foreign women coming to doha and i don't think my answer will be of much help really, i hope one of the western women on this site will reply to your post soon. I'm just here to tell you that you don't have much to worry about, there are lots of misconceptions about Qatar. It's not that hard to get accustomed to and though life here isn't what you'd call normal, it isn't exactly the furthest thing from.

the basic points: miniskirts and anything revealing way too much skin is frowned upon...you won't go to jail but you will get dirty looks. being drunk in public will get you in jail. that's about all i can tell you

good luck in your quest for answers and once again, welcome to qatar!
