HOW TO BEHAVE AND WHAT TO WEAR???
Hey everybody,
I'm new on this forum so first of all I'd like to introduce myself. I'm 24 years old, east-european girl from Macedonia. I've recently found a job in Qatar in a italian restaurant Bice (in Doha), so I'm supposed to move there after a month. I would really appreciate if you can help me with some advices regarding how one yound blond blue-eyed girl should behave and what to wear once I am in Qatar :S Not that I'm afraid or have some prejudices or so, but how do not get the attention of the men there and not to get in some trouble :S Pls write anything that u think could help. And I'd really want to hear the opinion of the foreign women in qatar, aswell the native women :) and native men aswell :)
Thank you in advance,
Aleksandra
Hmm, Kalil you are faced with a problem as anything you say may upset her.
All you have to tell her is that it is not allowed (which it is posted on the mall entrances that one must dress decently). ____________________________________________________

Hi Zayd, i got the similar question regarding proper clothes to wear. i have a girlfriend wants to buy miniskirts for her to wear there in Qatar of which i find it uncomfortable. It allowed right? but i think it would also get some serious attentions to the one looking at it. What would be the best way to tell her about it? If I may ask my friend. Thanks

Happy new year to everyone and thank you guys!
Guysss, I am really not planning to stay in Qatar forever, i simply want gain some new experience, not save some money or make a life there...simply spent half year there and then go somewhere else :) well,i cant never know what will happen once i get there, but still...
arIYIana..You know..While working in that restaurant...You can always look for better jobs around... ;)
There are a lot of Eastern Europeans in the hospitality industry (hotel, restaurants etc)
Amoud, oh yeah. She sounds really interesting hey. Like she knows what she's doing...
Not. Hehe
The internet is our revenge machine
Last time I heard Rana was on the afternoon segment. She is the one who does all those corney voice over interviews.

Dear check your current saving I feel this is a good offer if your current saving is very less
Come here you will enjoy your life , Qatar is very good country to make money for any help please any time you can send me PM
I AM IN QATAR FROM LAST 3 YEARS AND EJOYING LIFE BETTER THEN MY HOME COUNTRY
Kinda public relations... with clients and so...it's just a basic salary it will grow up after 6 motnhs :P i guess
Bald, Eastern European waitresses are common, as well as cashiers etc.

Amoud, what segment is Rana on?

arIYIana, there are expat wives who wouldn't get out of bed for what you are being offered. You will doubtless be working long hours, and will barely have an evening free.
From the link you gave, it looks like an upscale restaurant, paying downscale wages.
You really need to be doubling what they are offering to make life pleasant here.
What is the position you are coming for as I can't see them employing European waitresses!?!?!?
Did you Google it first?
Ha, I have Gypsy on my mind at the moment, how she referred to Rana on QBS as a muppett LMAO. That has been stuck in my head for weeks.

Ariyiana, the offer is not the best, as you can read from the posts on this thread but you should also think whether this exposure will help you with your career or not.
Hotel staff get paid QR 1,000 (lodging and food are company provided) and they can still have a blast! Take it as a new experience.

That's all....at the end of January I will do a round..
It's an italian restaurant opening in the beginning of january. The name is Bice here is the link of it
http://www.bice.ws/index.htm
Mzama, still not getting it, she is coming to Qatar to work in an Italian restaurant, thats why it is an Italian restaurant. _____________________________________________________
"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
Ariyiana, I am sure you can also eat in the restaurant, so if the QR 2,600 is yours, and you dont have to pay any expenses you can survive. You wont starve to death but it will not be a life of luxury. ___________________________________________________
"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
it's still pretty low...sorry :S
it was only a part .... these things as we discussed .... as will be the specialty restaurant that will speak, for example....Why an Italian Restaurant etc etc
i like it i like it carry on carry on dont get quiet lol
Well...if the salary is really that low I cant gamble at all, not with my life though... well it all depends how one lives of course, but if u say it's not enough I dont want turn my life into a "survivor show" :S Are u sure it's really so low if i dont pay for the flat and so?
Da, you really think I am polite? I dunno, perhaps because I am so laid back about so many things that nothing really bugs me enough to get upset.
Only thing that pisses me off are holier than thou types. FFS get a life..... look Da, now you made me say something sordid lol.

You are already such a scary person because of your politness
now dont scare the poor gal :?
amoud has a point aleksandra, it's more or less a leap of faith.
Mzama, how would she know? she never arrived yet. I was more confused by your comment on "So, miniskirts jeans bikini tatoo and others..."
____________________________________________________
"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
lol, Ariyiana, you never know what will happen once you get here. You might find your job terrible and you hate it etc... but good things can also happen. You may meet a nice man, get married and move away from here, you may end up hating it here so bad you go back home, or you may love it and never want to leave. It is a gamble we all took when we came here.
Trust me, you will like it here.. Qatar is a very open and liberal country, dont be scared ;)
____________________________________________________
"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
how the restaurant?
Neither do I... :S U scared me guys :S
mzama?? I dont get it
____________________________________________________
"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
So, miniskirts jeans bikini tatoo and others...
And, how about Italian restaurant? tell us....
the only reason i could see for you to accept the offer is if you're not satisfied with your life now and desperately need a change or if it's a step in the right direction career-wise...if the case isn't either then you really should negotiate hard or just let it go, better opportunities will come up in the future :)
You know that Karwa drivers only make QR 1,200 a month? I was shocked but unfortunatly there are salaries out there less than this.
It all depends on the individuals situation in their home country. For waitstaff, QR 2,600 is pretty standard for newcomers.
___________________________________________________
"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
:( is it really very low? God damn...mum and dad will have to help a bit then :S
2600 is not enough. negotiate for a better offer...start out by asking for 7000 and try to settle on 5000...or even higher if possible. anyway, 2600 is not enough. you would be able to survive though but it won't be a glamorous life by any stretch of the imagination.
the winter doesnt last long here just till Feb End. rest the whole year is warm
QR 2,600 is pretty low, but you can survive if all else is paid, just dont bank on saving anything or having much of a social life.
The temp can drop to 10 degrees in the winter, I dont think you will need boots or an extrememly warm winter jacket, but you can google the weather questions.

"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
And what about the money, are 2600QR enough to survive a month (not including apartment and transport here,it's paid by the company)? and about the temperature, is it needed to bring boots and coats and so? :D how cold it can be there?
Nice. Would love to try BICE sometime.

There is so much to do here, especially this cold season.. and we can show it to you once you get here ok??
Cheers

died laughing :P I usually dont go shopping worn like that :D
Hi, Welcome to the site. I am female working at Ras Laffan Industrial City, I have worked in Qatar now for 13 months.
Be modest in your dress, no shoulders or cleavage showing at work for sure, skirts (below the kneee, pants etc are great). For the most part I never wear anything above my elbow or knee at work. Shorts are ok on the Corniche but wear knee length shorts if possible, only wear bathing attire at hotels, never on the corniche.
Just wear what you feel comfortable in but be modest..
Amoud bikini?? woohhoooo.. which pool is that and where??
Cheers

DaRude, she can wear a bikini at any of the pools with no worries, unless she is swimming in the Gharaffa club pool lol.
All of the pools are generally on compounds or in the hotels. Bikinis there are fine, I didnt tell her to go shopping in Carrefour in a stringy :)

"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
whaaaaaat bikini is fine.
hold on there let me get my gun stay steady
Bikini is fine at the pool. You can wear whatever you want, and you are not required to cover your hair. If you go out in decent respectable clothing than you should be fine. ____________________________________________________
"Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock - Will Rogers"
wear your hair anyway you want...i'm not allowed to wear a mikini because millions of people will go blind if i do...don't think that's the case with you though...you'd have to ask around for that.
u wear anything its not a problem but c to it dt it should not expose ur body anywere ok and the clothes must not be too tight that all figure is seen.
not must to cover your head at work or in public you can keep em as you like.
covering hair in public is your choice
I guess there is a uniform which I'd wear at work...what about the veil, should i cover my hair aswell (in public places i mean) or it's my choice? I wouldnt ask about bikini and so at all,can imagine what would be the answer :D
Thank u for the replies guys
welcome to qatar :)
says who jeans and trousers are not adviced??
you don't have to worry much regarding the way you dress .. its not like a blonde woman in jeans CHASE HERE .. no no .. its a very peacful place to be in .. regardless of your hiar, eye, or skin color .. guess u will like it here
you're more than welcome :)
haha your question made me laugh...i'm sorry, i know you don't know much about the area and i shouldn't laugh but that's just funny...it's ok to wear trousers and jeans, it's all anyone wears here...apart from outfits that show too much skin everything is fair play...you can go out in a dress or a sweater and jeans or anything in between
Skirt to the knees or trousers & shoulders covered (no vest tops) should see you alright in public. I'm sure the restaurant will have a dress code so ask them what you should wear to work.
Did you Google it first?
Trousers and jeans are very much recommended. Otherwise your underwear will show and your legs will get cold..
Thank you so much Zayd :) Well...I'm not a fan of miniskirts and neither of the alcohol so I suppose it won't be that hard...One more question,is it true it's not adviced to wear trouser and jeans? :S
Let me start by welcoming you to Qatar Living. This site has many helpful contributors that will more than gladly support you and answer any questions you have.
this seems to be a major concern with foreign women coming to doha and i don't think my answer will be of much help really, i hope one of the western women on this site will reply to your post soon. I'm just here to tell you that you don't have much to worry about, there are lots of misconceptions about Qatar. It's not that hard to get accustomed to and though life here isn't what you'd call normal, it isn't exactly the furthest thing from.
the basic points: miniskirts and anything revealing way too much skin is frowned upon...you won't go to jail but you will get dirty looks. being drunk in public will get you in jail. that's about all i can tell you
good luck in your quest for answers and once again, welcome to qatar!
