Assalam o Alaikum and Hello Everyone,

Just wandering, As we are moving from Australia (wife & a son)should we bring our household furniture which is relatively new & in good condition & 2010 Model Toyota Camry Car to Qatar or we would be better off deposing this stuff in Aussie and but new stuff & car in Qatar?

Will there be any tax which we need to pay in Qatar other than the shipping cost?

Regards.

Yes, I Do understand things, understanding is not my issue.

For seeking an advice I need to put something up to get an advice on that, and that is what I was doing.

I guess advising is one thing and influencing one's decision is a separate thing. Not sure if the poster understands what most people above are trying to say :-). Ok let me put this straight - yes you can bring your furniture, bring them as you will not find them here :-) and given your questions above I am sure you will miss them. Their is a custom duty of 5% on declared value however your organisation that hired you would have provision for relocation and they will take care of all charges/paper work. If you are sending them yourselves you may have to go through the paperwork and 5% duties. Since they are used the value depreciates a fair bit and some instances they may be exempted.

As others have suggested and so would I, it advisable not to ship your furniture due to several reasons. First, the cost of freight is there. Second, the furniture will take a minimum three weeks to get here. Third, it will stay at the port for customs and inspection for some days. Fourth, there are always possibilities of damage taking place during shipment. Lastly, you can find new, good stuff here at reasonable costs and you can set up your home within a week after you have taken a villa or an apartment on rent. You will have some cost savings if you decide to buy furniture here and will also save yourself much of hassle. However, if you still would like to have them shipped, I guess the customs duty if applied is 5% of the declared C&F value of the consignment. If you need any further assistance or guidance even after you come here, you can PM me your email address, I will get back to you.

I am talking about shipping my household stuff, especially furniture by shipping to Qatar, and any tax/duties on that?

No, there should be none. I believe you will no longer be shipping any items and you will simply have your baggage that will be with you. As such, there should be no cause for any worries.

Will there be any duties or taxes on the luggage which I may bring to Qatar? I do not keep any pets.

You can buy good quality new furniture from several outlets here. Almost all of them are imported. Don't forget to bring your dog or your cat or your rabbits or your parrots or your guinea pigs as many QLers from the west get to miss them once they arrive here and then post questions at QL on how to bring them over!

Porn, Pork and alcohol is not my part of the parcel anyways. The residence will be provided by PHCC, and it will be Family accommodation. Car is right hand drive, i.e will not do good in Qatar. I do not want to use someone else's used furniture.

Its not worth bringing furnitures, car etc., you'll get every thing here, little bit used is at half price and even new branded ones to your choice depending on the villa you choose are available. Less luggage is always more comfortable. Good luck.

Mate Suggest you do research as Qatar is left hand drive so car is no good. I moved from Australia 6 months ago and the experience has been its good to move with out furniture. Its a total waste of money to move stuff and a lot of expats leave every day so you can find a good bargain.

You can bring everything in a closed container here. The customs will check for pork, porn, and alcohol.

Normally it takes up to three weeks before the container is released.
