Shipping from Dubai to Qatar-What a Surprise!

Hi Everyone,

I thought I wanted to share experiences we had shipping our personal effects from Dubai to Doha. First of all, beware from your shipping company! They will not tell you much what will happen to your boxes, unexpected charges, and delay (which always happen so give yourself double delivery time of what they promise you).

After 2 and a half weeks, our boxes finally arrived in Doha. I could not recognize my own stuff. Every single box was opened in a careless way. They opened sideway, upside down, and even ripped through our items. They even cut the box in a star-shaped so perhaps it would be easier for them to see inside? I don't know what missing or still intact anymore.

Does anyone have this experience before? We were told most of the damages done by the Saudi border.

By the way, we hired a reputable shipping company and paid premium charges since we were told to stay away from little guys. Well! it didn't help much since our shipment ended up subcontracted out to the small agent. Another surprise!!!!

Thanks.

Try ALMARAZEEQ Cargo check for best price.I relocated from DUBAI to QATAR 20 ft container.Their packing was excellent.I had received my goods on time and with no breakages. I strongly recommend them 050 5180866.

s-isale - thanks for the advice - too late now for me. I had no time to sort out anything like that in UAE. Was bad enough shutting down my flat and getting the clearance certificates etc etc.

But a friend in a world-wide logistics company here told me that Qatar Customs DO charge again for car imports regardless. And sometimes on original value and sometimes on assessed current value. As I said earlier it's a lottery.

xpatadventure - my agent informed me that no foodstuffs, vitamins or medicines were acceptable even by seafreight. And refused to pack a cigarette lighter !! Hazardous cargo. That's what you get from a good agent - and I'll give them a puff www.emoversuae.com. But they do not have an office here. They appoint a local agent to act for them. Runway International in my case. They were OK - not good on information but eventually delivered it all and assembled without damage.

Ian even if its a second hand car, one can go to the automobile agency and ask them ro give you proof of bayan and then Ithin kit needs to be stamped by Dubai customs once again. Then the customs here will not charge you. Since double taxation is not there in GCC.....

Some suggest that I should put the shipping company here as reference. It's called The Box located in Dubai. They assured me that they have agents in Doha as well, but it is not true (after checking and questioning).

We were not advised that there are certain items are or are not allowed to enter to Saudi or Qatar. Well, all of our personal medicines, vitamins, and dry food were thrown away. So be warned not to ship these items by land freight.

For your info, we also were charged custom fee at Qatar border as well.

Then we had 6 guys delivered 10 boxes to our apartment, which I didn't understand why the company would send 6 guys to carry 10 boxes. Later did I know they asked me for tip!!!

Lesson learned and thanks for your comments.

When I transfered from Dubai to Doha, I already have an idea that problems will be incurred as to getting a visa, delays and charges from the experience of my manager. So, I decided to ship it to my country, instead.

s_isale - I bought second hand so didn't have the original banyan. However I have been told that even with it Qatar Customs will charge duty. Maybe not always.... It's apparently a bit of a lottery. But your advice might help someone. Thanks.

I recently shipped personal effects and a car from Abu Dhabi by sea in a shared 40' container using a reputable agency. Took a while to clear the port but no damage and no unreasonable charges - just the port & customs costs at actual.

Couple of cartons were damp (it rained that weekend) but contents were OK.

Only problem was black, sooty paw prints all over the car's light coloured leather seats. The sniffer dog in the Port apparently. Not the agent's fault and the marks wiped off with a bottle of leather cleaner.

The assessed value of the car was reasonable. Bit naughty to charge 5% customs again when the duty was paid when it entered UAE. No real cooperation in the GCC !!

Overall things went fairly smoothly - maybe I was lucky?

Customs here is the worst, I watched a Customs agent drop a $10K equipment subassembly on the floor because she didn't expect it to be so heavy. She just picked it up damaged and all and stuffed it back in the box without it's electronic protective covering or bubble wrap. Of course, the brand new item didn't work, filed a claim against Customs, and 2 years later nothing has happened.

I went with "local" company when I shipped mine into Qatar and this company delivered through TNT here. Had no problem whatsoever. The "local" company advised they needed to list all the items in detail just in case, to avoid unexpected ordeals. They also classified it as "personal effects." They explained how this would make a difference, but I have long ago forgotten the details. I should also point out that I had my stuffs delivered by air cargo, so it could also make a difference.

But anyway, that was 3.5 yrs ago. Recently I noticed some people when shipping in stuffs (whether through online shopping or else - myself included) had their shipping packages "tampered" with by customs. In my case, there was clear indication with a sticker that said "opened for customs check" (or something similar to that line). Is there any way to find out who opened your packages? If it were customs, I guess you can't blame this on the shipping company.

As for the charges, even if you go with reputed companies, there may be charges affected at the destination country. Until now, unfortunately, I don't know of a way to find out for sure other than asking from the experienced. In my case of coming into Qatar, my company reimbursed the total amount. So it was just a matter of when to submit the claims for me - I managed to compile all the charges into one submission. But I guess it becomes more important to know whatever charges there is when shipping out, since the money will be paid upfront by my company.

First of all always now from the start that all charges must be in black in white.then choose the company with the name in the market...

Next time make sure to read the whole contract to see if there was like extra charges.. most shipping companies are aware that some customers will just sign without reading the papers first.. this i can say customer's fault.. regarding the boxes, every time we will send a cargo or package we have a list of all the items inside.. and we also have a picture of the box before sending it to them.. so we have a proof if ever they will tamper our box.. hope this helps :)

my friend have the same experience they left Qatar for Good, they choose a reputable company as well to send some imp. items and guess what after a month of waiting while checking the package from their home country they didn't find any record on it. when we tried to check here we found out that the boxes still in Doha and opened.

We cannot really trust most of the forwarding company here, and they care only for money.

Really don’t feel sorry for you cuz I had a similar expernices with the shipping companies.

I was expecting a package to arrive from Brisbane.

The shipping agency they told me it was going to take ‘em 5 working days to deliver the package to my house.

And guess what the it took exactly one month and 5 days before it arrived.
