At last!! - Religious police powers curbed
Saudi Arabia has set new limitations on the powers
of its religious police, its chief said yesterday.
The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention
of Vice “once had much expanded powers, but with the new
system... some of these powers, such as interrogating suspects
and pressing charges”, will be restricted to the police
and public prosecution, Sheikh Abdullatif Abdel Aziz al-Sheikh
told AFP.
The religious police may still arrest those carrying out
“flagrant offences such as harassing women, consuming alcohol
and drugs, blackmail and the practice of witchcraft”,
Sheikh said of the new law approved by the cabinet.
However, the cases of such people will be referred to the
police and brought to justice, as the religious police
will no longer have the right to determine charges against them,
he said.
Sheikh was appointed last year. Two weeks into his post, he
banned volunteers from serving in the commission, which enforces
the kingdom’s Islamic rules. Later, he went further, prohibiting
harassment and threatening “decisive measures against violators”.
In June, Sheikh came out strongly against one of his men
who ordered a woman to leave a mall because she was wearing
nail polish. The woman had defied the orders as she filmed
her argument with the policeman and posted it on YouTube

@MN
That ppl should seprate culture from religion
That muslim, jews and christians co-existed when Islam was in power
That there's no compulsion in religion
That ppl do have free will
That ppl cannot pass judgement on others and cast them out
That all ppl r created equal
.
.
.
.
and if I keep listing them I will need days to finish
Unfortunately ppl do not spend the time gettin to know all of that....and concentrate on how they can find new ways to divide ppl....that's all of course from a muslim's point of view...all I personally need from none muslims is to get to know the merits of islam and to not be judgmental all the time lumping all muslims together by the actions of a few
Post in Religious Forum!
You have to wonder about the validity of your religion if you need to force people to adhere to it
And what (roper way of applying Sharia) would be?
I am happy that you really understands the essence of being The Monkey of the Year in QL.
pls let us know what r u happy with
I am not really happy with the so called Islamic Political systems in GCC as in real it is not Islamic at all.
I second Sister Fatima as I too have same opinion.
thanks,.will see how he does after april 30 ;)
by now he should be up for the job i think.
Ya'ni I do agree following the religion should not be forced upon anyone. I meant only in punishing actual crimes, that there should be a proper justice system, fair for all. That's why I support the government's decision in this move, provided it brings about a better legal system!
Congratulations on the new King to the throne ..
tah mr.intelligent edited his comment
No one needs a religious police, how abt religious troops ( in the name of peace n harmony ) were they needed
my home country is a monarchie,. but my wife doesnt get kicked out of a mall/puplic space for not covering up or having nail polish on her nails..
its not the monarchie,..its the interpretation of religious rules that's not up with nowdays live
Fatima one of the few times I will disagree with you. No one needs a religious police, it's up to you to follow the rules of your religion. No compulsion
A good start towards abolishing religious police. Now I expect them to disappear very soon, no human needs moral guardians.
I read some of the posts here and all I get from 'em is...bla bla bla I hate Muslims bla bla bla Stone Age bla bla bla Arab Shit bla bla bla.....it just gets old!!!
Monarchies do exist....and r recognized internationally....DEAL WITH IT!!
Towards bettering the justice system of the country, prevents oppression and ensures the Shariah law is applied in accordance to the Quran and Sunnah with no corruption, this will be a good move.
The problem with so called religious police was many times their actions were going against even one another, spreading ignorance, and hence creating chaos. Hope and pray this move will mean a step in the right direction towards success and less crimes for the country!
told me she got a mouthful from the religious police for not wearing her head covering in the mall. I thank God we were rerouted to Dubai 4 years ago. I am sure I would have ended up in jail.
I do know that a NON-MUSLIM cannot be judged by Islamic standards that is Prohibited.......
You u support the fact that its ok to lash a loved one for wearing nailpolish in a mall.
n/a
tah, u support the religious police??
Just wondering what their personal experience was like ..
me!
Just out of curiosity ..
has anyone ever had dealings with the religious police ?
Nato is the religious of ALL , let us all thanks Nato for the peace n harmony they brought in iraq and afghanistan

Nothing
never the religious police but the i do support the King and his ruling system
Saudi Arabia is a difficult place to understand, and its legal system is based on some Stone Age law which is subject to individual interpretation by clerics in each case.
potato potatoe !
what difference does it make?
i find the justice system of the country to be good... law is law in KSA
I still love the strict justice system in KSA as per the sharaiah .....................:)
