Good Old Days

I just can't help but miss the good old days.. When a three bedroom brand new apartment was like 1800 to maximum 2500 riyals per month.. A 2 bedroom maybe 1200 to 1500 and a studio for 800 to 1000. Utilities and food were so much cheaper as well.. It is true the salaries have doubled since then but still it is not enough.. The rents have increased 8 to 10 times.. sigh.. sigh.. sigh.. The good old Qatar..

2 riyals every morning and from that, I used to have one pepsi and two huge samosas or sometimes one samosa and one kitkat. Most of the time my best friend who also used to bring 2 riyals, we used to share.. We used to get one pepsi, divide into two and then 2 samosas, one each, two oman chips one each and 2 small kitkats one each.. Gosh I miss cheap old days.. Can u imagine one large aalu samosa for 50 dirhams only? Now one samosa is 1.50 and much smaller in size..

Not everyone is blessed with increased salaries. And even from those who have received increments, not everyone's salaries still match up with the increased cost of living. I think one of the biggest budget assassins are school tuition fees..truly sky high to say the least!

Even the previously cheapo joints have increased prices. Stuff like grilled chickens, mixed grills etc are now not only more expensive but downsized as well..not fair!

We used to go to a this wonderfu Indian restaurant called "Welcome" which has long been shutdown.. There the five of us used to eat to our hearts content and pay a maximum of 35 to 40 riyals.. Imagine, appetizers like chaats and stuff then main courses with soft drinks and then desert and tip included.. Then we had this Pakistani restaurant called Lahore hotel where we had kababs etc and even at Shezan we never paid more than 50 riyals for the five of us but now Shezan is like 50 per head.. Eating out now is really very expensive..

My brothers and I all went to the local Pakistani school.. You won't believe how much the fees was.. the monthly tuition fees was like 150 in grade 1 to max of 350 in grade 12.. And now my brothers pay something like 1800 riyals per month for each of their kids and they are in KG 2 and grade 2 and the school is not exactly great but much better than the shitty Paki place we attended..

I got my first car in 98 and before that I was working since 95 and those three years I barely spent 6 riyals a day in taxi fair. From my house at old airport to my office somewhere near the town center, it was around 3 to 3.5 riyals each way..

Yeah I remember, I used to buy fresh chicken for 10 to 11 riyals for a 1200 gram chicken and now the same is for 20 riyals. Also meat, beef or mutton was like 16 to 18 per kg but now its like 25 to 30 which is the cheapest you can get.. Eggs were like 6 riyals for a full tray of 30 eggs and potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, onion.. all were like 1 to 1.50 per kg. The Indian vegetables were max 5 per kg but now its 8 to 10.

theres a quote and it goes like

I miss the days when:

Boys had cooties

Recess was too short.

Life was too long.

Decisions were easy, to choose by "eni, meanie, mini, mo."

Only skinned knees brought tears.

And when boys were yucky.

Goodbye only meant unil tomorrow.

When your clothes didn't need to match.

The only race issues where who ran faster.

A promise was a high five.

And fun went on forever, without a broken heart.

is there anything else to it or is that it

thats all i could remember

Where Have the Old Good Days Gone? )-:

whatever happend to my life? )-;

We have been staying in the same flat for five years now, and when we first moved here our rent was like 1500QR more than it is now. Before that we stayed in a pest-infested villa back in Gharafa for like 4000QR and it was truly overpriced! I'd say the rent situ is much much better now than it was back in 2007-2008.

So you can imagine the kind of change I must have seen.. When I arrived, the skyline was practically non existant.. The Sheraton hotel was under construction and I remember I had gone for its opening with my family sometime end of 79.. The Center was the only shopping center cum family supermarket in town and we used to go there almost every weekend..
