Two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen will be sent back to India by Friday, the Italian government has said, reversing its previous decision not to send them back to face trial.

Italy said two naval guards on trial for murder in India would return to the country by Friday, after earlier saying they would remain in Italy in a move that had unleashed a diplomatic furore.

The two — Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone — had been granted a special leave last month by an Indian court to return to Italy to vote in elections but had skipped bail.

The two are accused of killing two Indian fishermen they mistook for pirates off the Indian port of Kochi last year while they were serving as security guards on an Italian oil tanker.

India should first bring to justice the many rapists which are on the loose in its streets before embarking on trying two foreigners.

Then, nobody knows the truth upon the return of the marines to india all of a sudden despite an initial refusal to send them back. However, there are consolidated speculations about the multi-billion dollars exchange trading of several warfare helicopters that india threatened not to buy from Italy.

Happy.. The accident happened in international waters. When the vessel realised about the death of the fishermen, they called indian authorities. These asked the vessel to unboard for clarifications. Then the immediate arrest. International laws are clear about this. It is not india's role to prosecute them. It is all recorded on official documents.

...should not have taken place in India! The accident was in international waters! How can someone justify the indians for this? It was all achieved through deceit to have the vessels reach indian territory and it was through outragious blackmailing that they got the marines back!

They were recieved by their foreign minister at the air port at their last journey to freedom and their PM had met them too.

Italian marines have returned to INDIA on a condition that they will not be given CAPITAL PUNISHMENT if convicted as MURDERERS...Indian government has given this assurance to ITALY...

I hope this shouldn't be turned out as a mere political gimmick....

...so much for the vienna conventions which the americans and europeans used to use earlier to get out of such situations. What is to be appreciated is that India went about the job in a peaceful, diplomatic, respectful and professional manner without resorting to making loud noises , bombing the italian capital or trying to get rid of the italian leaders like the americans or the British would have done

Good old joe, Precisely so! What I cant tolerate is the way India dealt with this. Im not here to play anybody's advocate but I followed the case and I am well upset at the way things were dealt with. And yes, india did play dirty tactics and threw up a diplomatic case.

They brought them back without using the commandoes, air power or blackmail tactics but perhaps the story was a bit complicated as a lot of money must have changed hands in this stupid drama and it also goes to show that barking dogs seldom bite

It is so easy to comment and judge without having details and just cutting and pasting articles from newspapers. What hasnt been said here is that India used deceit and tricked the italian vessel ( with marines on board as anti-piracy measure) inside their waters with the excuse to enquire about the accident but as soon as the boat reached the harbour the soldiers were arrested. The fishermen were approaching the vessel and did not stop after warning, therefore they had been shot. The Italians stayed ONE FULL YEAR in India without trial, as of course the indians themselves do not know what to do. International laws are very clear on the matter but India wants to play a dirty game and even took the italian ambassador whenever the news came up of a denied return for trial. This is against the covention of Vienna. The italian soldiers could face death sentence ( but they are not civils, they are soldiers, and cant be condemned by an external country ) and it is only right to protect them against political games. Also, there is the multi billion dollars deal of warcraft helicopters India bought from Italy and the whole thing triggered wide financial defensive mechanism which are now using the marines as scapegoats of a larger game.
