New undersea tunnel to airport!

New undersea tunnel to airport!

Doha Socialite
By Doha Socialite

A project is underway to link the West Bay area with the Hamad International Airport (HIA) through an undersea tunnel.

This will be one of the major projects to be implemented in the coming years linking Doha south, central Doha and Doha north, Al Sharq reported yesterday.

The project will start from West Bay near to the City Center as a two-lane bridge in both directions towards the sea and then become a tunnel under the sea leading to the airport.

It will meet a second subway starting from the new airport road with a three-lane undersea tunnel leading to New Doha.

The third segment of the project starts from Lusail with three lanes in each direction, with a bridge and undersea tunnel leading to New Doha. All these lanes will join at one point under the sea off the Corniche.

The tunnel will have sub-lanes linking some key tourist destinations such as the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha Sheraton and Katara, said the daily. The project also includes several entertainment venues for people using the tunnel.

Tips for Great City Planning...

1. Put all the schools in one place...

2. Put all the high rises in one place...

3. Put all the markets in one place....

4. Put all the embassies in one place...

5. Make an Island that has only one way to enter and exit from...

6. then dot all the roundabouts with Malls...

7. Eradicate shops operating below any residences...

8. Put all workshops in one part of the country.... and name it Industrial Area

9. Then build public transport that doesnt link any...

10. If the public transport touches one make sure it doesnt touch the others in the list 1 to 6

11. Make sure there are no playgrounds for sports... only parks for kids...

Plus initially it was supposed to be a viaduct. Still they have not finalised what it is going to be.

Building a tunnel like this is kind of similar to the upgrade taking place on Salwa road.

Sure the traffic will ideally flow quite well up and down the length of the tunnel, but if nothing is done to address bottlenecks at either side, what's the point?

The Salwa Road upgrade just directs more and more traffic to Midmac roundabout and Ramada Signal, neither of which can handle the volume.

Similarly, what's the benefit of a tunnel like this if it spills all its traffic into West Bay, which is already struggling to cope with traffic problems?

Relly, it would be wornderful project.

Its not about benefits. It's about spending vast amounts of money on ideas by consultants who make tons of money and make you believe that implementation will put the country on the world stage..

I really dont know the benefits of going UNDER the sea...

The practical way would be to build over the sea...

Oh, I see. Sir if it's undersea, t's going to be a breathtaking of a scenery than just a long bridge with no elements to see but the surface of the water.

Nope - 2007.

There are still links to articles from back then:

http://www.constructionweekonline.com/article-1254-plans-for-bridge-across-doha-bay/1/print/#.UX5TF6JTB2A

The UPDA has invited tenders from various consultants specifying three options for the project: a landside tunnel that would run from under the central business district (CBD) in Doha to the West Bay area;

***a long offshore bay bridge or tunnel, preferably with a connection to The Pearl-Qatar, which would directly link New Doha International Airport (NDIA) through either a rail or road link; ***

or a rail-based public transport system that would connect south Doha and NDIA with West Bay"
