Challenging Monsanto: Over 2m of 436 Cities

Millions of activists around the world have rallied against Monsanto, the biotechnology giant for genetically engineering agriculture and food while suppressing negative scientific research.

Organized by the 'March Against Monsanto' movement, an estimated two million have taken part in the massive event on Saturday spanning six continents, 52 nations, and at least 48 US states.

“It was empowering and inspiring to see so many people, from different walks of life, put aside their differences and come together today,” said Tami Canal, founder and organizer of the global event.

“We will continue until Monsanto complies with consumer demand. They are poisoning our children, poisoning our planet,” she said. “If we don't act, who's going to?”

Good work LLR the Map shows good info.

Wonder who is the Agriculture Minister of SL... he must be a really wise guy...

About BT Cotton: It is made by inserting gene coding for Bt toxin so cotton produces insecticide in its tissues. This was done to control primary pests which got killed by the Bt protein in the transgenic cotton they eat.

China found that after seven years these secondary pests that were normally controlled by pesticide had increased, necessitating the use of pesticides at similar levels to non-Bt cotton and causing less profit for farmers because of the extra expense of GM seeds...lol

I am glad Sri Lanka has understood this fact.. Please check this Map.

I just read that oland Finally Gets to Ban Monsanto Maize.

Precisely why we weren't really exposed to much info regarding GM crops. Most farmers in Sri lanka are fiercely traditionalist and overly cautious hence trying these modern methods are somehow not as popular specially in the more rural areas.

Very invaluable information. Something I must admit not given much thought about until recently, when all these protests were staged. And yes many evidences presented from the "for GM" troops somehow seem very confusing and not very convincing.

blisteringbarnacles2007

Iamthexxx the funny thing about some GM crops are.. that the first year they give bumper crops then the ground is sucked dry... nothing will grow there for another few years...

that is the reason many farmers couldnt payback the loan and they had to commit sucide....

Not only they died, lost the land but the cultivable land goes out of cultivation...

Then they can say... "see.. the food production has fallen... we need GM crops"... and the cycle continues....

What happens after the banks seizes the land is another story... they sell it at throwaway price to the Ministers... mostly Agriculture Minister (as he helped them to convince the farmers to take loan and use GM crops to die).

By blisteringbarnacles2007• 27 May 2013 15:37
blisteringbarnacles2007

Another example is tax on land, which the British fixed in India around the end of the18th century was set at 50% of the gross agricultural produce. sometimes 70 to 80% of the gross produce.. thus one-third of the best irrigated land, in Tamil Nadu, went out of cultivation by around 1840.

And those who are still engaged in agriculture have to be educated not to use synthetic chemical fertiliser (which is akin to putting poison in the farm)... and to do it the organic way and neither to use Genetically Modified seeds or plants.

sulieman it pains to see once thriving farms and orchids of my relatives now turning into forests...

By blisteringbarnacles2007• 27 May 2013 15:32
blisteringbarnacles2007

lol..Sulie...

Yeah Brit.... Govt is the biggest culprit...

Back home there is Zero incentives for farming and on top they are putting tax....while companies like Tata, Reliance, Wipro, & Infosys enjoy a lot of benefits...

A lot of people are moving away from farming due to such difficulties. Kerala is one good example even though the land is still fertile... and water plenty...

Output of food has decreased due to Government "inteference" rather than the lack of it.

I don't know the story outside India. In India farmers are not educated . They simply trust the words of seed seller.(Monsanto indirectly though.

Many cotton farmers have been pulled down because of these genetically modified cotton seeds. Reason its completely new to them and every time the tree is infected by a disease they have no other option but go to Monsanto for pesticides and help to identify the disease.

There is monopoly with Monsanto. Monopoly is no good in the long run.

Government is a joke.We don't have great leaders anymore and bunch of selfish business and salaried men like me . :(

All the food shortage is artificially created...

In the last 200 years agriculture has deteriorated... with large scale introduction of pesticides & chemically synthesized inorganic fertilizers.... the health aspects of this will take another essay... one cannot put pesticide in one's food plate and expect it to be safe...

Due to these fertilisers Farm production (per hectare) has fallen... and to justify that more food has to be produced in other than traditional ways they have introduced GM foods...

By SPLITT• 27 May 2013 12:00

monsanto locks the farmer into buying their seeds for life and has in place a termination gene that stops germination and thereby prevent the farmer collecting his own seeds. They are also then obligated to buy the herbicide that the crop is resisted to ( manufactured of course by Monsanto)

Monanto also have a history of suing neighbouring farmers for being in possession of their seeds in the event of cross contamination in nearby fields.

Yep - pure EVIL.

The fault lies with the government for not helping the farmers and not putting in proper controls. The farmers are also to blame for rushing in without knowing the full impact. Monsanto has spent millions on research and development and is obviously now trying to reap the rewards.

Farmers the feeders of a nation have been persecuted... and have received none of benefits that many top companies get.... in India the govt buys the produce sometimes at below the price of production...

Seed quality has been destroyed beyond imagination through genetic modification.

Of late people have realized organic cultivation is not only safe, healthy but also produce more food per hectare.

The ignorance of some is astounding. Without the advances in agriculture in the last 200 years we would have many more starving people than we do today. (Over population is a one of mankinds biggest problems but I'll leave that for the moment).

I love the way people say this company is evil, well maybe it is but not in the ways you think. GE crops are needed to feed the world's population and there are no recorded or scientific proved harmful side affects.

Evolution itself takes place by random gene mutation but I don't here you all complaining about banning evolution.

What is funny is that Norway is no way an Agriculture Country or Economy to be soooo concerned… the country has just 3 months of Farming time June, July and August… before the country goes under Ice…

Sometimes the Sun doesnt come up for 60 days in a row...

They should hardly be concerned with agriculture...

So what does it know that we don’t?

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway about 1,300 kilometres from the North Pole.

It functions to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds in an underground cavern. The seeds are duplicate samples, or "spare" copies, of seeds held in gene banks worldwide. The seed vault is an attempt to provide insurance against the loss of seeds in genebanks, as well as a refuge for seeds in the case of large-scale regional or global crises.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard_Global_Seed_Vault

Bill Gates with his MG foundation is also involved in that…

Natural mutations range from harmful to beneficial. Those with damaging effects are gradually eliminated from a population by natural means, since individuals afflicted with this damage are less likely to reproduce themselves than normal individuals. The more severe the damage produced by a given mutation , the more rapidly it will be eliminated, and vice-versa; mildly damaging mutations may require a great many generations before they gradually disappear. Beneficial mutations are the mechanism by which we evolved to our present state.

However Monsanto is a slow disaster...

Today all the local government has to do is provide water to farming areas. As simple as that.

Instead of forgiving the loans of poor farmers Govt is busy giving millions of $ tax concessions to Multi-National Companies, and then increasing tax on working class & Farmers.

Ideal situation for companies like Monsanto to thrive...

Modifying Genes is dangerous... because when you eat gene modified food how your body reacts to it is still not clear.

It definitely affects our body.

There are lots of Countries where agriculture can be practiced 12 months of the year. These countries can provide double the food... that the entire world needs.

Pre-British India (India+Pakistan+Bangladesh) & China contributed about 75% of the food for the World. Then the British came and destroyed the farming in these countries by leaving more than 50% tax. Farming in these countries have never been the same.

Chemical fertilizers have also destroyed the farms

such fertilizers kill the earthworms and similar living organisms living in and under the ground.

Every year more and more fertilizers have to be used for the same size Plot.

Spraying of such chemicals from sky has poisoned the wells and nearby water sources...

Monsanto is one of the biggest problems of the world...

on one hand they are developing genetically modified food and on the other hand they are saving the best quality seeds in a seed storage server in the Artic... for what?

The downside is a plenty.

Not only the seeds. the pesticides which is again product of the same company. its greater business model.

Genetically modified plants are grown from seeds that are engineered to resist insecticides and herbicides, add nutritional benefits or otherwise improve crop yields and increase the global food supply.

farmers harvest greater yields. the main problem now is the cost of the seeds..

Well LLR I'm not here to defend Monsanto but many do not under GE food. They hear Genetically Engineered and all they think about is some sort of frankenstien plants roaming the planet.
