Bittersweet day for Qatar athletics
Qatar Athletics Federation president Dahlan Al Hamad was elected to the post of Asian Athletics Association President during election in Pune, India. He beat incumbent Suresh Kalmadi 20-18 in a close contest.
Al Hamad elected AAA President
But there was also some bad news for Qatar as defending Asian champion and Asian record holder Mutaz Essa Barshim withdrew from the high jump competition with a back injury. The London Olympics bronze medallist had set a new Asian record (2.40).
Congratulations... but how can Corrupt Politician Suresh Kalmadi even stand for the post he was recently jailed for corruption.
On 25 April 2011 Kalmadi was arrested by CBI for awarding illegal contracts to a Swiss firm for Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the 2010 Commonwealth Games causing a loss of Rs 950 million to the exchequer.
Kalmadi's membership of the Indian National Congress Party was suspended after being arrested and charged with corruption.
On 26 April 2011 he was sacked from the post of president of the Indian Olympic Association
Congratulations
