Stinking the High Heavens

Acadian
By Acadian

As most people with a little logic and a brain would understand living in society demands we adhere to a minimum standard. I took a plane from Dubai back to Doha. As I sat another passenger boarded the plane and sat in the seat behind me. His body odor was ripe and real nasty. I stood up and ask the cabin crew to change my seat as I refuse to sit close to this individual and smell him for the journey. First the stewardess refused. Then I asked if she would sit in my seat for the journey. After approaching my seat and smelling the guy behind, she sat me 12 rows away. Then many other passengers requested the same. My question to you is. Should businesses such as airlines, coaches, public venues like theaters and restaurants have the right to refuse people who are socially offensive due to bad hygiene and enforce refusal of entry or service?

A few more..........

6) Women with burqas (they present terrorist threat)

7) Families with small children (because they run around and create nuisance for others)

8) People who snore

People do get drunk on flights and people do smoke in plane toilets.Yapping without knowing is graver than being "just stupid".

Sun, 3 and 5 are just stupid.

For 4 airlines already refuse to board passengers that are drunk.

3)They should not allow women looking cheap ...

Many innocent men will suffer due to this ..

If the airlines start working the fussy way, then

1) They should not allow smelly people

2)They should not allow fat people

3)They should not allow women looking cheap

4)They should not allow drunk people

5)People requiring constant hugs and kisses from their partners in public

6) People who spit with every "p" in their vocabulary

My goodness, then they will have the flights country and culturewise and not destination wise.

airline rules in general,.. the can refuse any passenger with a boarding pass if the want to,. either because of BO is which case the suggest you to freshen up before you board,. or in case of being under the influence from drugs of any kind to sober up first and take the next flight

Cannot impose the same rule for flights...

I wonder how the airlines going to check the BO of the passengers ?

Will they sniff each and every passengers - daily ? :)

I think, then within every 5-10 mins we will find a dizzied sniffer's body lying next to each check-in counters....:O)

Sometime in 2009, I read in 7Days newspaper that any passenger of Dubai Taxis who will find the cabs in unpleasant smell upon getting in can call the taxi company at anytime to complain. Be it the taxi driver's BO or the previous passenger will result to the driver's paying penalty.

So i guess, yes, the airlines should have the right to refuse strong smelling people so as not to disturb other passengers too. But if it is tolerable, maybe we can just cover our nose for few hours, or regular trips to WC will help.

May be the officer wanted to clear you off from the Airport at the earliest because of your BO.

as said before you can clean up take a shower before starting your travel or do so at a lay over.

BO was one of the main reasons for me to get E-gate at DIA so I can avoid standing inline in between bad BO smelling people ;)

Some say that people who has BO are the ones who doesnt know that they smelled. (I dont know if it is a joke or truth)

I feel your pain.... sitting beside someone with BO is nauseating.... its a daily battle for me with taxi drivers and colleagues.

But if i am going to fly, just like nomad, i bring vicks vaporub with me.

so my answer to your question is NO, i dont think that they should be denied of service.

By happygolucky• 14 Aug 2013 10:35

I guess some people just lack the civic sense or may be completely oblivious to how bad they are stinking. If spotted by ground staff they can be asked to shower before they board the plane. It can even be printed on tickets as for boarding time to shower before boarding so as not to offend other passengers. If even after this they stink for no medical reasons, guess they should be denied boarding. It sure is a torture with someone smelling bad even for a split second what to talk about even the shortest of the flights to tolerate their stink.

By theapprentice• 14 Aug 2013 10:30

Acadian, you missed my point...the refusal of service is what i am talking about as being offensive, maybe you may want to re-read my comment (?) I didnt say that telling someone to wash is racist... (and that's far from what I am trying to say) oh well, i am not responsible on how you comprehend it though.

Denying service to someone coz he stinks is a little bit too harsh., (and that's where my suggestions of possible solutions come so no one can be kicked off of the plane just because they stink)

Peace!

By Acadian• 14 Aug 2013 10:10

I think most people in the world who fly can have access to showers, water and soap. Much cheaper than the faire. What is racist about telling someone to wash? Knowing you will be among people in close proximity should be reason enough to wash up and not smell offensive.

It's hard for them to deny service to anyone without branded as being discriminatory or racist.

But they can probably make some solutions, like putting a shower cubicle on the plane or put a shower in every toilet at the airport. Free deodorant give-aways or shirts..

I believe that service should be for everyone.

Many oriental people don't like the revealing clothes worn by females of certain cultures. But they never request airlines to get those women off the plane because they are bad example for their children

There are times I do not like how a person looks or dresses to on many flights. I have the choice not to look at them and turn the other way. Having to smell someone`s BO from lack of hygiene to the point of feeling nauseated surpasses the social tolerance.

You must have not been in Saudi Airlines where those long bearded mutawwas would refuse to sit next to an unaccompanied female passenger. If they get a hand on it, they'd demand for single female to be banned from entering a Saudi aircraft.

BO, will spread within its radius. The only way to ignore is to NOT Breath or wear N95 mask. You can't just 'ignore' a smell.

Think for a second you're sitting next to a smelly feet westerner. Think about breathing in his 'essence' for a period of 2 hours.. no wait, the plane is going to Aruba (I don't know where Aruba is or if it should qualify as a country even) so I'm guessing 8 hours? Now go ahead and ignore the smell.

I still remain firm on my stand. He could have done a lot of thing and so could have the complainant. he didn't ask you to get off his plane. Then why should the complainant call for banning him from flying. Many oriental people don't like the revealing clothes worn by females of certain cultures. But they never request airlines to get those women off the plane because they are bad example for their children. They ignore and avoid such sights and so can you ignore and avoid such smells. Tolerance is part of civilized society no matter how offensive and shocking is the circumstances.

I think it was quite ignorant-ly arrogant for him to think that everyone would be OK to his BO because 'back in his home country' everyone is the same...

I would agree with this statement. No excuse for not keeping good hygiene no matter where you are from or class of society.

Well Sun, we understand life is not milk and honey and bed of roses.

But, it only cost less than 10QR to buy one of those deodorants and a minty chewing gum to make everyone's life a lot easier. We're not talking about a helpless baby or a sickly old man. He was a perfectly fit and mentally stable person. The least he could do was to be more socially adept. I think it was quite ignorant-ly arrogant for him to think that everyone would be OK to his BO because 'back in his home country' everyone is the same...

Reminds me of a Canadian nurse who used to say 'back in Canada we do this...' whenever we refused to listen to her. She almost killed a patient once. Definitely an idiot she was.

I am talking about attitude, perception, reality and acceptance. Fubar I don't believe in dreamy selfish youngsters who wants everything to be nice and one fine day find themselves old, ugly, lonely and as repulsive as they used to find some other people in their better days. This is fantasy of fools. In real life, there is pain, suffering, sickness and helplessness. The only thing which makes life worth living is the care and love and tolerance which we get from thousands of anonymous people.

By fubar• 12 Aug 2013 17:25

Yeah, because expecting that people take a shower or be denied boarding a plane and killing people for being old and sick is totally the same thing.

Great use of logic there.

Acadian, do you have kids? Have you ever changed nappies? Have you ever nursed old people or disabled people? I understand your dislike for bad odor. You did a right thing by getting your sit changed, but asking airlines to ban such travelers is going too far. Would you take a gun and shoot the toddler whose nappy stinks or would you send all the old and disabled and sick people with colostomies to gas chamber? No my dear friend, we don't do that.We either tolerate or help the things to become better. You scare me man.

Qatar airways includes this clause in their conditions of carriage. Kicking off stinky passengers would be possible if they choose to do so:

"Carrier reserves the right to carry, or remove and cancel the corresponding whole or remaining ticket portion of a passenger who, in the opinion of the carrier as explained in its conditions of carriage, exhibits unacceptable behaviour on board its aircraft"

Well, learn from the beautiful, delicate and sensitive hostesses how to accommodate themselves with all type of people. She has to end up giving the same respect to all passengers and would call the stinking guy 'Sir' with the same smile as to you. And off course many of such stinking guys contribute for your salary and travel. Don't become racist or you will be expelled to do so at QL.

This is tropical desert land and if you stand for an hour in sun and sweat in summer, you would end up stinking too.

I think if you want to fly you should reach minimum standards. If you turn up drunk they refuse to let you board. If you stink to high heaven then the same should apply as this will affect the other passengers.

Different airlines have different policies.

American Airlines is specific about the issue. It has a 'customer acceptance' policy that outlines numerous reasons for not accepting a passenger for travel on one of their flights. One of those reasons is listed on American's website: having "an offensive odor not caused by a disability or illness."

Unfortunately there are so many smelly people in this part of the world it would be very tough to enforce without it looking racist.

Yes they do have the right to refuse to allow passengers to board if they are going to be a disturbance to others. That's why every airline makes it clear Durian fruit cannot be carried on board, it stinks to high heaven too.

No, I don't think they have the right to refuse admission on such grounds...one, they are bound by laws, two, it doesnt make good business sense and three, these are all relative and qualitative and no norm can be established. If one goes on case to case situation, it may lead to litigations.
