I was in a mall two months ago.. No sign of the religious police and shop open during prayer time ...

Things are changing - albeit slowly..

Brit: Having lived d in Saudi Arabia and I can attest to your statement.

However, the Religious Police, with their special religious squads, are still in full force in much of the kingdom.

The Mutawa , still do regular monitoring trips to malls and other public places. When the call to prayer comes on all business come to a complete stop, still many of these shop keepers and the shoppers were not heading to the mosque rather hanged around the mall or enjoyed a quick cig in their locked cars.

Then suddenly a pack of mad religious bulls come swarming out of the heavenly shaded big cars with nightsticks and start emendating the public to go to pray.

May he rest in peace, very sad indeed

The religious police “the Haia” are not allowed to chase people, in other word they don't have the authority and that starts since The head of the Saudi religious police, Sheikh Abdul Latif started his duty, and he said to Alarabiya : "The number of the religious police officers is too much, more than 6000, so there might be some infringements and the "Haia" will punish those responsible for the incident"

Those poor poor boys...what a tragedy. My heart goes out to the surviving brother and all their loved ones. May Allah grant them strength and capability in dealing with their loss..and grant the deceased paradise..Aameen

Glad to know that investigations are underway because if found guilty then all those responsible deserve to be sent to chop chop square!

Brit, I have been told because sometimes "the masses " have to be reigned in...and that is when they are sent out in force.

Having lived and worked on and off in Saudi, I can say that the influence of the religious police has diminished greatly in the last few years - especially since King Abdullah came to power.

They are hardly seen in the big cities.

Question: Has anyone ever wondered why they have religious police ?

Does not surprise me. What do you expect from people who scream at women because some of their hair is showing? Or beat them with their little stick thing because part of an ankle is showing under the abaya ?

Btw...most Saudis can't stand them.

I have seen them getting beaten up by Saudis...more than once.

Nothing wrong in having religious police...but important is they follow the rules in the right way and do not use force on people
