Happy Canada Day !!Thanks for reply.I have also couple of questions for my son education as he is going in grade 9 here Canada. Since I am planning to move soon, what is good probabilty of getting admission in American or equal schools. Please share your views.regards
Thank you Don, actually I visited their website and it was helpful to apply to few positions that match my experience. May I ask you kindly to help with more hints where and what agency that recruit Canadians? I am from Toronto, and currently I am in a visit to Qatar. I like the atmosphere here and I am trying to find as many Canadians companies operate in the region to apply to openings they may have suited for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i think Olive answered your question already in the other thread. there is NO canadian embassy in qatar.. at least not as of today.. hopefully it will happen one day...

I am fairly new to Qatar and do not know many Canadians. I need to renew my passport and as there is no embassy in Qatar, I understand I would have to send my application to Kuwait embassy.
Can anyone point me to a good photographer / studio where I can get mine and my families photos as per the guidelines on the passport Canada website?
Do we need a Notarized waiver letter for passport renewal?
How much time does it take to get a new passport?
I did register online, but the Warden hasn't yet contacted me. Meanwhile, Appreciate if any of you can provide some info on the above.
and with the number of canadians increasing, I think its only a matter of time.
As for the Embassy in Lebanon, I think I heard by last count there were some 26,000 registered Candians in Lebanon! Granted the VAST majority are dual citizens (lebanese candians), but sheesh!!
Stay safe all.
Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?
Hi Don, I have just find your this old posting. I am from Ontario. If u still in search for fellow canadian give me a bizz. Let us make a canadian club here.
You could be right! I recall when fighting broke out between Israel and Hezbollah even the Canadian government was surprised when it had to evacuate nearly 50,000 Canadians from Lebanon!
yeah, they try to bring demand into correspondence with supply...
.. just recently 12 new work visas were issued for canadians, within 1 company...
..and guess what...they all used to be either english/scotish/irish or french before became canadians.. does it count? or we count only "used to be" indians and jordanians?
I have noticed on this thread that some people are worried about a shortage of Canadians in Qatar. I can assure you that there is no shortage eh, that the number of Canadians is increasing every day. Last year in our office, we only had one Canadian (who used to be an Indian) we now have four.
We have managed to quadruple the number of Canadians without even hiring any. WE now have three Canadians who used to be Indians and one Canadian who used to be Jordanian eh!
Also, I have lots of Canadian friends so if anyone is in desperate need of a Canadian, drop me a line and I will send you one.

There's a Canadian group that meets farly regularly for functions (mostly non-operational during the summer). When you register with the embassy ask your warden for contact info.
I am canadian from Montreal as well and have been approched par QP as well for a position in Risk Management Finance. I was wondering how was your negociation with QP over the compensation package, BTW, they offered me 60 000 US per year and don't know yet about the compensation details, is that a good basic salary ??
Go to the "Turkey Curl" on Friday morning (9 till about noon) at City Centre Mall. The link above should work but things are slowing down for the summer. The Embassy in Kuwait also has some contacts (and you should register anyway) that are also helpful.
Come to the "Turkey Curl" Friday between 9 AM and noon (or so) at the rink at City Centre Mall. Try the link again, I checked it and it seemed to work or check through the Embassy in Kuwait as they have the connection for the Canadian Warden here who can help.
I arrived from Ottawa a few months ago and I certainly love it here. But I sure miss Canadians at this point and I have no idea how to meet other Canadians here. Sometimes it is small things like a Canadian Team is in the finals for the Stanley Cup but not one person in my office would understand why this would be exciting and important. Anyways I tried the link above and it does not seem to be working. Can you resend it please.
I've been here since September. I would agree with BHappy's statements. QP is a pretty good company to work for although of course with its own quirks. Doha is OK and tends to be friendly among the EXPATs. There is a large Canadian population here and of course that helps.
flexibility by QP during job offer negociation process. I will suggest to search for my previous posting wher I have described in detail how the process of onsite interview (i.e interview in Doha works) and what will happen during your stay. As you may know QP pays you based on your job title/roll and have most of the time when HR makes you an offer, its based on what your job role will be in QP and what they think will be a right number for you. Their is not much negociation and if you insist for more than what has been offered, they will come back with very marginal increase, like may be 500 QR 1000 QR more. When you convert that in Canadain $, its simply not a number that you can use to base your decision to come to Qatar or that make much of a difference on one's decision to come to Qatar. When I had my neociation and I did negotiated and even I was need badly but even then the numbers that they came back i.e the increase part was not that great. They generally would leave the position vacant for months then to negotiate. I think that its actaully an ego problem too. It does not mean that you should not try to negotiate but the results will be not that great. From the time that I have joined QP, the Canadain$ is going up and up and I seem to lose money all the time except the part which is paid in Canadain $ as western allowance. Having said that, QP has revised the salary structure, housing and has also introduced bonus recently and the package are much much better than they were few years back. But the Cost of living has become very very high now specially housing. What QP pays for Housing (and its not a bad amount), is simply not enough to rent a decent Detached, semi detached or any kind of house. the only option is an appartment and a 2 bed Condo like appartment will cost you from 10,000 - 12,000 QR monthly. Villa's or house are much above and based on the quality and space, you have to pay from 15,000 - 20,000 QR per month.
My partner and I are looking at moving to Doha in the next couple of months. He's been offered a big promotion and we are now faced with having to make the decision to accept it or not. The issue is, I work as a Communications Manager in London, England (I'm originally from Canada) but we are wondering what my chances of finding a job in Doha are. Does anyone know how easy it is for me to find work in Communications/PR. I have over 10 years experience in Communications and am just worried that either I won't find work or else I will have to take quite a step down in my career. We have to make the decision in the next week or two so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

MY HUBBY ONLY WORK 5 DAYS A WEEK FROM 6.30 TO 2.30PM.
When I compare to friends who work for private oil and gas industry like Halliburton, Maersk or Conoco Phillips, their hubbies working longer hours :-)
I am a canadian based in Montreal. I will be going to Doha for a two day visit next week for med exam, orientation and i guess final negotiation. I will probably join QP in June.
Any room for negotiation with Qp over compensation package , if you have done this part?
Yes they pay for the phone rental. My husband used to get 6500 QR for housing allowance, now going up for 9000 QR. We find it is not enough to get a villa in a compound. 4 yrs ago 6500 QR you can rent beverly hills, but now you lucky if u can stay in 3 bedroom flat.
QP used to have falcon club for the recreation for the staff. Now they demolished that and there is no replacement ever since.
I'm English but living in Turkey. I spent 15 years with the old (Qatar General Petroleum Corporation...now QP and that covers the entire oil/gas sector) and yes there are ups and downs.
Social provisions (Company facilities) have deteriorated over the years but the developments in Qatar have probably made up for that. Another plus is that the country is now far more tolerant of Western behaviour and habits.
Be warned about the housing costs. QP at one time provided free housing and utilities (including phone line rental). They then applied a limit to electricity and water useage after which you pay and I'm not sure if they pay for the phone line now (unless it's required for the job).
If housing is provided I suggest that you take it. You will see from other posts how the cost of housing has risen.
Ask QP all the questions to which you require answers.
Well, we have less population. Are you Canadian as well?
Any thoughts about QP? I've seen some negative postings about them but none recently. I've also seen many good things. I'm sure that like everything else there are ups and downs.
I'm from Edmonton and I'll be with Qatar Petroleum. You may want to check out www.petro-staff.com . They are in Calgary and actually do a lot of work in the Middle East.

I am upset though that no one has answered mir83's well thought out question "Where do we get the oppurtunity to meet candaians in Doha?"
It surprsies me that someone as inteligent and well informed as mir83 doesn't know the answer.

When I compare to friends who work for private oil and gas industry like Halliburton, Maersk or Conoco Phillips, their hubbies working longer hours :-)
Moudir ...
No ... we go to cheaper houses and uses the left over of housing allowance to pay electric, water, cable tele and ADSL.
They only paying for phone rental :-(
I'm still at an earlier stage. Let me know how you make out.
Don
I am a canadian based in Montreal. I will be going to Doha for a two day visit next week for med exam, orientation and i guess final negotiation. I will probably join QP in June.
Any room for negotiation with Qp over compensation package , if you have done this part?
Novita, do they also pay for cable TV (or satellite) and high speed internet ADSL service (or wireless) ? Thanx!
Moudir
Yes they pay for the phone rental. My husband used to get 6500 QR for housing allowance, now going up for 9000 QR. We find it is not enough to get a villa in a compound. 4 yrs ago 6500 QR you can rent beverly hills, but now you lucky if u can stay in 3 bedroom flat.
QP used to have falcon club for the recreation for the staff. Now they demolished that and there is no replacement ever since.
Don,
I'm English but living in Turkey.
Whatever you decide to do.......... good luck.
Well, we have less population. Are you Canadian as well?
Any thoughts about QP? I've seen some negative postings about them but none recently. I've also seen many good things. I'm sure that like everything else there are ups and downs.
Yes I come accross quite a bit of Canadian in Doha. :-) Not as many as brit or american though.
-novita-
I'm from Edmonton and I'll be with Qatar Petroleum. You may want to check out www.petro-staff.com . They are in Calgary and actually do a lot of work in the Middle East.
I'm surprised there are any Canadians left in Canada there appear to be so many in Qatar ;)
Don’t know if you have come across these websites:

I’m still in the process of researching the opportunities. Where in Canada are you from and what will you be doing in Qatar?
