International Driver's Permit?

Does one need an International Driver's Permit plus one's driver's license from one's home country to drive in Qatar?

BTW, I have an Australian driver's license. I'll be arriving on a multi-entry business visa and will apply for a resident's permit once I finally arrive in Doha.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Update to this. If you have an IDL from your home or another country, and your DL, you CAN still drive in Qatar (until you get an RP and Qatari DL).

BUT, you cannot come to Qatar, and apply at the IDL office for an IDL to drive in Qatar. The IDL does NOT work in the outside country that you purchase it in. It is always better to get the IDL in your home country, or outside of the country that you intend to move or travel to.

NOTE: An IDL NO LONGER allows one to drive inside one's own country without a local DL. Most countries have driving laws that exclude an IDL from being used by a Citizen of that country, within its territorial borders.

If you have your International Drivers License be sure to bring your Australian Drivers License when you arrived and drive in Qatar, you can use IDL until you have your Resident Permit in qatar. You can take your Qatar license only if you have issued Resident Permit in Qatar. And if you want to drive and rent a car better to use your IDL and copy of your passport when you arrived in Qatar.

definitely a good idea to get one before you leave home, but if you forgot, our own lovely Kiarajane can fix you up with an American International Drivers permit...[and no, I don't get commission for this free advert!]

Moomin, I am late to this but I would recommend you get an international drivers licence in Aus - you can drive on that for 6 months, and immediately, without the hassle of getting a temporary licence (you just need to carry your passport as well as the int'l licence when you are driving).

You can drive on your Aus licence as well, but only for 7 days.

Land line phone is 2 weeks till whenever they decide. Just depends on area, staffing, how loud you complain, etc. Internet (DSL) is another 2 weeks to 6 weeks after the landline.

Hala mobile is walk up and pay your money and you got it.

It take no time to get a cellphone line but it might take a week or more to get a telephone line.

Temp Lic cost money that is not applied against the real Lic, International Lic will do same thing and work other places for less money.

If you drive on your home licence, you may need to carry your passport with you.

I believe that temporary licences are available from traffic department and (I think) are valid for 3 months.

I think you can drive a rental car for 30 days on the lic from your home country. I would recommend an International Permit also, as it sounds like the new RP requirements will take longer than a month to complete. You can't get a Qatar Driver Lic until you have an RP. You can drive on the Interneational for 6 months or more.
