CONSIDERING EMPLOYMENT IN DOHA

I may be relocating to Doha in the near future with my wife, my university-bound son, and our four legged child of the Toto type. Although I will purchase a vehicle upon arrival, I will be traveling out of Doha daily for work, therefore, my wife and son will be without a vehicle. Is there reliable public transportation in Doha?

Our son is considering starting university in Doha, either at the Texas A & M campus or the Canadian campus (can't remember the name of the school). Are there many U.S. college students in Doha? Where is "Education City" located in relation to where the major housing centers are in Doha?

Is it difficult to bring a small dog into Qatar? Having lived in Iran and Saudi Arabia, I know most Middle Easterners are not overly fond of dogs. Is it a problem to walk a dog (other than the heat) around Doha, or take them to the beach?

I've enjoyed reading many of the responses to questions posted on this forum. There are obviously many delightful expats living in Doha. I look forward to joining you! Cool

i am still trying to find answers to your questions as well, but...

i have read on some posts about people getting a driver. it may or may not be within your budget but something to check into?

is your son wanting to follow in your footsteps (i.e. engineering)? if so, then i say texas a&m all the way!! ;)

I wish Doha had a subway system and massive transportation like the big cities of the East Coast in the U.S.

My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. So be it.

The taxi situation may improve soon according to this article:

I've yet to have a problem with them, other than the driver being 15 minutes late one time, and that was at 1AM.

Public Bus is very Excellent in all days except Fridays coz so many expats riding them at that day so buses are being crowded.

in general Buses are Excellent but KARWA Taxies are better than Buses. all Taxies are air-conditioned , comfortable and you can get a bill at end of the trip.

Hello

Now there is a public transportation facility called KARWA ( Taxies and Buses ) you will find the General bus station at Elghanm Area in Grand Hamad street , it is not easy to catch a KARWA Taxi it but it is better than others anyway , and i think it will be more better in near future.

Regards

Ahmad

Education city located quite away from the centre of Doha, it is located somewhere out of Al Gharaffa or something like that.

YOu need 2nd car for your wife... believe me she will more happier living in Doha if she can be independent and get about herself (eventho driving in Doha is a big challenge).

We normally took our dog to inland sea or somewhere in the desert when nobody else around. Never walk the dog in the main road in Doha, although sometimes i saw one or two people walking the dog in the compound.

PS: Do not rely on Public Transport in Doha... taxi is bad especially in the peak hours very hard to get. Although Doha just started a public bus, i never try it myself

Unfortunately public transport is a big problem here. Taxis are most unreliable and I wouldn´t recommend the public bus service for your wife. It is best to get a second car.

About the dog... It will be just fine. I have seen many people walking their dogs. No problem at all.

All the best for you and your family, b.
