I think when you shop to the groceries, you buy not only food, it includes personal hygienic stuff like soap, shampoo, detergent... etc.. etc.. so 1000QR in a month is a little less... 300-500weekly more likely.

Hello everybody,

Are you so kind to help me with your opinion about the offer that I've got?

The offer is for a job in Doha on short term (3 months). They've offered me a net salary qr7000, also accommodation, transport, utilities are being paid by the company.

For a single person, is this enough?

Thank you!

Dear everyone,

I'm a 18yr old girl.I have just finished high-school and would like to work in Doha for a year. Why? Because i'd like to live on my own, gain some experiance, learn english better, and also thats my dream to learn arabic! After a year of work i would like to come back to my country( Hungary)to university.

I know that my chances for getting a good job with only a school leaving exam are little and i dont expect too much. I dont have any experiance in working abroad, but that's my dream to visit Qatar. I just would like to know what my chances are, what kind of job i could get and, the most importent question is: Can i contrive from my salary? How much will i get, and will it be enough for living?

(I heard that im supposed to live with other girls in one room together. I think i can adjust to a situation like that)

So i'd appreciate any advice or tip about how much income can i expect a month, will it be enough for subsistence?

Special thanks for all of you who answer me and help me!

Dear all,

I hope you can help me with my concern.

I am an auditor from the philippines. I have almost 3 years experience in public accounting practice in a big 4 firm in the Phil. A big 4 firm in Doha is offering me 8,000 basic tax free salary a month which already includes the rent and transportation cost of living in Doha.

They will shoulder my plane fare from Philippines to Doha plus some relocation cost. A once a year benefit of free plane fare to go back to the Philippines is also offered.

Do you think the offer is reasonable enough for the job and country? I am looking forward of earning money to send to my family in the philippines. Please advice me since the contract will be for 2 years. Thank you so much...

Dear all,

As specified in the offer as single status, I will get a house allowance of 3,500QR/month. Considering all the discussions here, I would like to negotiate with the recruiter to be offered with company accomodation (just such kind of appartment for a single man like me) instead of receiving the house allowance. Do you think this decision is better? A house allowance of 3,500 QR/month is not sufficient even for a single man, is it?

Many thanks for your responses in advance.

Hello there. I have 5 years multinational co experience

3 of them in oil/gas field and I have bachelor & MBA

from good accredited university. I come from Egypt and

have good salary plus allowances there equivalent to

7500 QR. I got offer at oil/gas famous company in Qatar

for 12000 QR plus free accomodation/allowance depending

on availability plus free medical and annual ticket back

home. Is it good offer? I already save equivalent of

4500 QR in Egypt. I am not looking for depriving myself

in Qatar for sake of money. I am single and assumed will

spend 3000 QR there (is this normal?) thus saving

9000 QR/mon (double Egypt saving). I tried negotiating

but no luck and my recruiter sucks big time so I am very

hesitant. Any advices on whether its worth it or not?

Thank you.

A big qatari bank is offering me 4,400 Qatari Rial a month for a financial risk analyst position.

They will pay for the accomodation and cost of living expenses (except food).

I've only had slightly over 1 year of experience but I have a master's degree in finance.

Is this pay alright? Will I be able to save enough?

If food is around 1,200 QR a month, I'd end up with 3,200 QR.

For comparative purposes, the same job here in the philippines pays around 1,200 QR with the tax already deducted.

Is this worth it? I can't make up my mind because getting the job will make me pass up a possible grad school scholarship in the UK next year (around 50% chance).

I totally agree with e46M3,

HOw many of you pay a rent of Qr3000 or less ????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Qr3000 for rent !!!!!! who are they fooling??? And even though everything is relative yet there are minum requirements for a human being in order to be living with dignity.

The only case these figures would be considered fine, only if they are willing to suffer while they're still young until they have better chances elsewhere.

I myself have slpet on the floor and didn't have a TV for months when i first went to the US, i had to work to pay for food and bills.

By e46M3• 24 Jul 2006 14:57

True. Unfortunately many expatriate workers come from countries whose governments see them as nothing more than a source of hard currency on the balance of payments sheet.

But forewarned is forearmed.

By angelwings• 24 Jul 2006 14:50

Salaries generally here now belong to two classes. The have's and the have-nots. There is little in-between.

Until each country begins to set its minimum acceptable wage + allowances, employers here will continue to take advantage of the rise in rents etc., and the expats will take it or leave it. There is not usually a lot of bargaining done. Someone somewhere will take the job for a pittance of a salary.

Sad but true.

By e46M3• 24 Jul 2006 14:27
e46M3

Do you mean Tarek or ahmadhamdy who is the guy with the 5000 offer?

While I agree that it's all relative it does not negate the actual cost of living in Doha. I know employees from Syria and Jordan on 7000 who bitterly complain about their salaries. Economies in places like Egypt and Syria are not what they used to be.

Don't forget about the schools and while Arabic schools are cheaper some have already started emulating Western schools by levying what they call a "capital charge".

Hence my recommendation but at least these guys get various perspectives and can make their own decisions.

By angelwings• 24 Jul 2006 14:19
angelwings

I agree with you Super, the rates that are advertised in/for different countries has to do with the relationship of the qatar riyal to their own economy. And most egyptians would be on a similar salary to this offer, unless they were top managment.

e46M3 hold on a second. Some people would be pretty happy with the salary Tarek has been offered. Remember everything is relative so something that you may not be happy with others would be.

I spend more then 3000 a month on food and groc....Don't cook so eat out everyday.

1000 can only be if you eat in cheap places or cook yourself, which might not be possible after 12 to 14 hour work day.

Doha is not exactly a cheap place to live.

Tarek,

Not all companies provide accomodation, most of them just give you allowance which in most cases is not enough for a luxury accomodation.

My advice to you is just keep pushing them for the best deal you can get...and in the end if you do accept then make sure you adjust your budget and save at least Qr8000 for accomodation.

Good luck and if you come here you can contact me at any time at [email protected] ,feel free to contact me at any time

Tarek you will need accomodation which will cost you min QR6k if not included.

If that is included then 13k is not that bad really at all.

I would say more important to get accomodation included than higher salary. Rents will keep going up no matter what people say and it also takes some of the hassle out of it.

Am a Qatari with 4 persons in my family n I sure spend more than 1000 a week on grocery, even though I am on a continues diet :P. But maybe the much spending is cause I have a wife who likes to cook for the whole neighborhood :(

To answer the question of how much it cost, it depends on the person n the family. I have a friend with a wife n 4 kids who always brags about spending no more than 1000 a month on all groceries. But that's done by waking up at 5 AM n driving to the industrial area or the farms to buy the veggies n meat n the waterfront to buy fish. For me, nothing worth waking up at 5 AM but if u can do that then huge savings can be made :)

I think Qr1000/month for grocery is quite a reasonable figure.

YOU can always have an open budget for groceries, you can keep stuffing your fridge with un-needed things and at the same time you can also keep it reasonable...so always try to have a budget and stick to it.

She probably just eats out too much. You can definitely keep it around 1000qr a month. It also depends on what you like to eat and western brands will cost more of course...but I have found the local brands acceptable.
