I love their overuse of the word "hooch." (e.g. here: Hooch-selling gang nabbed.) It makes me feel like I'm living in the 20s.

Really, though, I think a lot of the vocabulary usage is just more influenced by Indian English than British or American.

I particularly like this bit

Thanks for the tip. Matter of fact, we have tried to dig and find out how banks like IBQ, Commercialbank and stuff get these awards. It's a well-known fact it's due to advertising. But as I may have mentioned earlier, could get Woodward and Bernstein here and couldn't write a thing. Not when the Foreign Minister owns IBQ, Commercialbank is prtty much his as well, ditto Four Seasons and Qatar Airways. Cross the locals at your own risk.

Stories that are not written or simply spiked because of interference, could use up a deacde of newsprint.

As for felicitations, LOL, not a word I use.

Felicitations - not very often. They also use strange slang such as "gave the cops the slip" on occasion

killerbee I have some copy for you. Why don't you do a little journalism and research the awards such as Bank of the year and best bank in middle east from the banker magazine instead of just giving free advertising.

You will discover that the only way to achieve these awards is to buy the most advertising in the magazine. It is not a real award at all. Surely this sort of information is what people buy newspapers for?

Gulf Times is the same, Super. I guess they get their kicks from thinking that their language is complicated enough. No native English speaker I know writes like that.

why do the writers from peninsula often use really long and antiquated words when a short one will do?

I get the impression that everyone sits with a thesaurus on their knee trying to find something to make their article sound "professional".

Typos (typing errors) do (or is it does) happen...kind of hard to fly thru (woops, through) the keyboard in office.

As for errors in The Peninsula, well we have an almighty desk allegedly to fix these things. Gets frustrating at times.

You seem to be quite a jounalist killerbee. I presume you write for the English version of the peninsula, I didn't think there was a non-english version but judging from your post I would have to conclude there is.

I assume that this rule doesnt apply for the 33 or so "visa on arrival" nationalities.

Actually I wrote that article. there's heaps of confusion here on vist and tourist visas. However, the cash amount is an incrase in what I think was Q3,000 earlier. As for Qatar Airways that has always been there. have to keep the monoply going eh?

The rule appears to be only valid for "Independent" Tourist visitors arriving in Doha or Hotel Visa Tourist...

It does not appear to apply for family visit visa travellers(But I could be wrong and appearances can be deceptive)..

The saving grace seems to be that you only "SHOW" the credit card or the money...(not actually deposit it)..
