Working for Al Jazeera International
By Che Guevara •
I'll be joining Al Jazeera International , a dream I've had for some time now. I need to ask anyone, employees of Al Jazeera or anyone working in Qatar, what kind of accommodation is provided by Al Jazeera for singles. Im worried that pre-determined accommodation may be unsuitable or in an unsafe neighbourhood. Can anyone help me out on this?
Id really appreciate it.
Thanks

Hi guys,
I am looking for a tip about submitting my resume for aljazeera (both english and arabic). If anyone could tell me any information or guide me, I will be grateful. I have tried the website but unfortunately, It doesn't work for me (maybe it's a technical issue but the webmaster didn't reply to my emails).
thanks in adavance
bye
Please note that Qatar is safe almost anywhere...so don't worry about safety...
Good luck in your mission with Al-Jazeera and focus on truth, truth and nothing but the truth.
I have sent my application to aljazeera. Just wondering, how much time it was from the time you sent the application to al jazeera and then they notify you or...
It would be a great help from you if you kindly share about how you joined al jazeera...
Thank you Che...
May God Bless you
Matt
I wont be sending you my picture. You are obviously the "dirty " one here. Its not just an Arab thing its..more a male thing which you have clearly displayed. You are from the UK and yet want my picture to decide whether to help me out or not....Thanks but no thanks. Typical male hey!!
Hi Matt,
I find it stupid that you are comind to Doha to work for Arabs and get your salary from them, then call them "dirty arabs". I feel offended
yes the hours are long too long send me your picture and maybe i can get you an interview out here (you know what these dirty arabs are like ;))
Hi Mat
I am still in the UK.
Did you have a phone interview or were you interviewed at the London office?
Also can I ask about the package they have offered you?(Wages, holidays, accomodation and hours to be worked per day.I have heared that the hours are long!!!)
Cheers
Nadia
im in the uk and am about to head out next weekend. Maybe we can meet up and talk about it nadia ?
Hi
I am applying for a job with AJI. Just wondering if you could please enlighten me.
Is the interview done over the phone if you from overseas ( I am from the UK)?
How many days holidays as an employee do you get and what kind of package do they offer (salary, allowances, accomodation etc).
What are the working hours?
Does AJI provide any child care facilities?
Thanks
Dear Che Guevara,

I signed my contract 2 months ago..and still no sign of my work visa. Was told it takes 2-3 weeks and I dont even have a dual citizenship. I guess I wait another mth??? :( :( Cant even watch al jazeera where I am had to look at youtube!! I think my jaw will just drop when I am there....high end technology there! visa where art thou!
You're a Queen! Thank you so much for your effort n time in assisting me you've been very helpful. I will definitely send through my resume. I am 1st generation American, but I'm not "white" I speak 3 languages fluently, Most importantly I'm born and raised Muslim, so hopefully that's enough culture for them :) Thanks again!!
ny
its worth the shot, and any experience will be good, even your production experience, if you could make a good resume and clearly state your experience (emphasizing on any production or technical aspect) and send it to the email and wait and see, it might take a while for them to answer back but hopefully they will get around to doing so, and i also heared that they are not keen on hiring pure westerners into the station as they have too many , but i still think you might have a chance, also if you have other nationality it would help a bit. and if given the opportunity for interview, make sure to wow them during the phone interview. Thats as much as I can help , as I havent started work there yet, but maybe if that doesnt work then i might be able to help you further more once am there. Dont worry about experience , none of us were born with tv experience, some one who truly believes in you will take a chance on you and give you that experience.
Cheers and good luck
I am an American citizen unfortunately. I do have real Work experience in my field of film production, but not yet in the news room. That experience can easily be acquired at my local News Station, via internship if I have to. Although I am more interested in the Documentary Film Production Aspect. I have a few proposals Id like to share with some Who can Make it happen... I am Not fluent in Arabic Although I am learning. You know I wouldn't mind starting out with a lower end job just to gain the companies trust in me and my skills. Any hope??

Very cute! My true passion and emphasis is documentry film, Id like to start with a news organization like Aljazeera though, I think it would give me the experience, that i need in the middle east, as well as contacts. Mostly my passion lies with my fellow muslims being represented! So CNN cannot satisfy my needs! but thanks for the suggestion how about giving me some information on what I need :)
hey, one question pls ?
what about the CNN, do you interest in ?
thanks and good luck ;)
:) Just kidding, I would like to be on that same boat you all are floating on, Although I live in California, thus I've found it difficult to get much information on jobs with Aljazeera. Since many of you are now currently employeed, Would you mind advising me by sharing your positions and perhaps a range for your compensation. I am trying to gauge wether or not Id be able to handle/ maintain a position with them, in the same time feeling secure.
Ma salaama
hi
wait and my advice for you if you have a work in jordan to keep it till you received your visa
dont afraid i think it will issued ,but the time is vary,so to keep cool and not angry still have your work !!
cheers
I signed September 26th and still no sign of my visa. being of Jordanian citizenship hasn't helped at all either since ties are strained. Still if it's taking up to three months to get the visa I've still got time. fingers crossed.
hi everyone, thanks aviduser for the info, as you said i have dual citizenship and it took me near 3 months to get my visa and now am waiting for my husband's visa which will probably take a while, hmmmm...about the villa acomodation, i was kinda of looking forward to the villa accomodation, too bad we would have to settle with an apartment, i hope by the time i move there things would have setteled a bit.
it will be nice for people from this forum to meat once we are all working there,
cheers
since the asian games are pending accomodation is a lot less time, a person joined our team yesterday and got her permant accomodation today as the prices for hotels are now astronomical!
hi all,
this is sooo interesting, we are all going to be working for al jazeera and involved in the set up of the international channel! and thank you aviduser for the info on the accomodation...
i think once we are all there..we be busy with work. guess, i have to be patience and wait for my work visa since the Doha Asian Games is coming up soon....
see everyone there!
cheerios
Don't worry if you are coming here, Working for AJI is great. All accomodation is provided as said before accomodation falls into two categories.
If you are single you will be provided with a two or three bedroom apartment. Some are in the Al Sadd/ Bin Mahmood area and a new block has just been rented near the airport.
Al Sadd area is near the centre of town. Obv the airport is a bit further out but its not too bad now the roads have been finished.
If you are married have kids then you will get a Villa or at the moment as Villas are in short supply you may get an apartment in a compound, all compounds have pools, a tennis court and some type of gym. Some have squash courts, Pool rooms and cinema rooms.
All accomodation is fully furninshed and some come with all small electrical appliances in the kitchens, plus table lamps TVs sat boxes etc.
All accomodation is of a high standard. Furniture too is high standard.
If you are joining AJI/thinking about it please note. If you have a dual citezenship your Visa will take AGES to come through this is not the fault of AJI.
Its SLOW Qatari beauracracy. Some people are waiting months. Please be patient and don't get put off.
CID checks or something, any paperwork takes ages here you get used to it.
hope thats helps
What do you mean children running the show? I thought the Arabic Channel were doing fantastic!
well im sat here in the newsroom, what a fantastic building and what a fab bunch of people, but remember what glitters is not always gold.
accomodation is going to be tricky as we run up to the asian games, as they are kicking people out of the Ritage & Flamingo tempory accomodation, however i have no complaints about my villa with the pool and jacussi & Gym.
Hah, what a great thread.
I'm on my way to Doha in a couple weeks for a job w/ AJI as well. Wish I'd found this earlier though, I had to wait almost 3 months for my work visa to come through (I was told two weeks).
Glad to hear the positive feedback, I've heard pretty good things about the company & the housing. Guess we'll see when I get there though.
And guess I'll be seeing you all there as well!
cheers
hi all,
i be joining al jaz too. just signed my contract this week. i think it will be a long wait for my work visa (at least 2 mths). the advise given was not to resign till visa is in your hands!! else u end up broke slowly. about the accomodations, i asked HR, was told its a fully furnished flat and its near the al jaz building. i am looking forward to this!!! v v excited. and yeah we will all meet soon insha Allah
I don't want to know. lets all come in do our jobs as far as problems, it's normal we will all meet soon,
I'm signing up as well. No worries We are going to have to get a new news network up and running, the last thing on my mind, is sleeping, If we are any good we will not be spending much time at our flats. just read the blongs Doha is very safe.
My uncle just left the arabic Al-Jazeera after working there for 2 years or so. Something about him being fed up with children running the show there!
Anyhoo, I hope things turn out differently for you with the intl station as there will be more experienced, public figures involved in running the place. But when the heck will it debut already?
I'm really excited about jpining AJI dream come true!
Also joining AJi, was supposed to ship out 10 days ago but someone 'forgot to sort my visa' so im currently at the whim of quatari beaurocuracy to sort out my visa. its currently about a month and a half since i signed my end of my contract and im going slowly broke (ive moved out of my flat in central london) and am now living on a friends sofa in the deepest darkest suburbs of london.
from what ive been told, i have friends out in doha already is the flats are great and the villas are even better
what is eveyone doing for AJi? and do you know the current storm of controvisy raging about AJi? if not catch up here --> http://www.friendsofaljazeera.org
aljazeera is an equal opportunity company so your nationality should not matter, I also got a job offer there and am still waiting to finalize things. I already visited the company and I was thrilled with the place and the employees, they are extremely nice and helpful which you don't really find in much TV stations so it is a blessing. As per your concern about accomodation, from what I heard is that all employees who are married and have children are provided with a very decent villa in a compound and single employees are provided with a 3 bdrm furnished apartment in a nice place as well. After all aljazeera has a big name and I dont think they will throw their employees(their best resources) in a place that is unfit or unsafe.
Good luck and I hope to see you there.
Hi Che and others,
I'm also coming to Doha to work for Al Jazeera Insha Allah. Apart from waiting over 2 months now for my flight intinary since signing the contract (!) I also had the same concerns about the accomodation.
Does anyone know if the accomodation that is given to employees is in a specific compound or area, or do they have a network of landlords on their books and choose that way, and does that mean the apartments could be anywhere in the capital?
cheers and all the best
I don't think your passport would affect your accommodation. Congrats on the new job.
That's really comforting. I have recieved a verbal offer and now waiting to recieve a written one. I'm british educated and lived most of my life in the UK and Greece but I have an Arab passport. Does accommodation differ if you're not a western expat?
by the way congratulations on getting your dream job- Al Jazeera is incredible, to be such an honest media institution in the part of the world and i hope you enjoy your career here in Doha.
I know a nice girl from New Zeeland, in Al Jaz..Int..When i see her, i will ask and write back to you..

I don't think you have anything to worry about. We know a couple of Al Jazeera Int'l employees and they were given really great spacious furnished apartments (I think they were 3bdrm). And then those that had family accommodations were given villas in a great compound.
