At the risk of being boo'ed of the site.... could I ask you guys a real big favour.....

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE..... could you stick to the topics on hand when being helpful to the newbies.... or anyone else for that matter.....

It is very frustrating when I am trying to follow a question posed by someone and then you guys start prattling off about other things....

As much fun as it is... I really don't want to browse through 200 of your personal comments to each other while trying to follow the answers to the original questions asked, or the statements made.....

Take care

Xena,,

Good thoughts ...

Qatari ...

You have our full support ! As i mentioned earlier, you have to educate old members of QL to avoid hijacking other's thread .... if they don't like the contents they should not bother to wirte their comments otherwise same will be treated with them also by others !!

Peace to all

It's a good example of how times don't change - thread is over a year old and, if QL had been running for 100 years, it would still ring true. :D

Hi all you inhabitants of Qatar.

First thing, well done on creating this great site! It’s very informative but also very relaxed and informal.

I have just accepted a job offer and will be moving to Qatar shortly. I will be working on a project in the industrial city of Ras Laffan. I have never traveled to Qatar before so I have loads of questions in my head at the moment. At the risk of boring a lot of you by asking questions that's been asked a zillion times before, here goes. Can I draw on your collective wisdom for some background and info?

I note that the average day temperatures are high relatively speaking 35ºC to 45ºC. As I'll be spending most of my time on site what clothes would you guys recommend, just jeans and a long sleeve shirt? Can you give me an indication of what the average cost would be for a jean, a long sleeve shirt and a T shirt / Golf Shirt?

Are there any on you here who is currently working in Ras Laffan? Have you got any pics you can share?

Are there any of you here who currently live in Al Khawr? Have you got any pics you can share?

I would like to get myself set up with a Laptop and permanent internet connection (preferably mobile). What would you guys recommend in the line of a middle of the road laptop and internet connection? What should I expect to pay for an average (no too high range - please note the very technical term :-)) laptop. And for permanent internet connection? Are the internet connections stable / reliable?

Can you recommend a cell phone and service provider? What should I expect to pay for an "average" cell phone? and service provider monthly costs / call costs? I may be able to get this info off the web, is so can you please direct me to the URL?

Where can I get an idea of the cost of vehicles and what is available. I hoping to get something used yet reliable and not to extravagant? I may change my mind when I arrive as I am a keen off road driver.

I there an organized group doing some social off road driving?

What is the process like to get a drivers license in Qatar?

Where are the best places to go and meet new friends? I'm not into the clubbing and disco scene.

What is the general cost of groceries? I have noted the groceries list here and have taken a good look at it. Is list pretty recent?

What is the availability of meat like in Qatar, lamb, beef, chicken (and may I dare) pork? Ideally BBQ type meat.

What is the general practice on selling alcoholic drinks in Qatar? Things like wine and beer and whiskey? and costs?

Thanks in advance for your help and look forward to participating here.

You can mail me at [email protected]

Guys, I think this thread is dead!

This place is many things. It's for asking questions and finding out about Qatar. It's also about sharing experience in Qatar. It's also about socialising with friends in Qatar. It's all things Qatar.

Just look at the Forum Catergories - it covers everybody! From people considering moving to those already bored out of there minds here!

So let's all play nice now. If you're really don't want to answer questions about rental, don't. If you only want to "banter", then keep it in a seperate thread so those who aren't interested in it don't have to read it.

If you have any suggestions about how we should deal with abusive members please leave a note in a new forum topic (create it under website problems).

By angel face• 14 Sep 2006 05:58

the heading says "Qatar Living - everything you need to know about living in Qatar", so of course you have to expect people to come here asking questions, and those people (myself included) would appreciate an answer, or at least information that's related to their questions, not pages and pages of chitchat. It gets quite frustrating after awhile you know.

By angel face• 14 Sep 2006 05:54

I think you're missing Xena's point. She did not tell them what they can and can't post, she simply asked them not to hi-jack threads. All she was asking was to put things in their proper places, to respect others as they would have wanted to be respected. No one asked them to leave, they did that on their own volition. Frankly, I think some people over reacted and is still over reacting about the simple request made on this thread. THE POINT IS TO STICK TO THE TOPIC OF THE POST. Xena never said "don't say this or that", all she said was "can we stick to the topic please", and she did it very politely, too. If people were hurt by the honesty of one person and the support of others who agreed with her point, then I apologize, but no one was asked to leave.

seriously a nice view point though and often overlooked..not looked at it that way myself. it's actually no ones responsibility to help out or be anything for anyone as most assistance here is done voluntarily. still i understand the frustration of those who had to skim and skip over to find an info esp (but not limited to) if u'r rushing, has a slow internet or avoiding getting caught by anyone at ur workplace while searching for an info. cheers, nothings perfect, it will always be one thing or another that could get to us.

I just don't understand all the fuss?!! What do we have here? ppl telling others what to post n what to do not? Come one guys?!! This is censorship n the NET is a place where we can post anything we like as long as it is respectable. So ppl r using humor? they chat? They try to have fun? n for that they should be taken out of the place?!! I say kill me then cause that what I use the net for. Am not here to advise ppl as that's not my job, n I do it just cause it gives me the joy of being helpful. I am here to have fun n if someone will not like that, then he can always ignore what I say or just leave :P

So u can not follow a thread cause someone chatted? I thought this is a free site for all to have fun n not a site to provide u services. U come n have fun n u may have a question someone nice will answer. But that's not a right u own or a duty for others. Just live with it n stop complaining ppl. N I agree. Lose the ppl with sense of humor from this site n what r u left with? Cry babies? Insulters? Boring ppl who will bring subjects just to show how important they r? Sorry, this is not a site to be in :P

N to the ppl who said they will leave, grow up n fight for ur rights. U r worst than the ppl who pushed u to this decision as u have caved in. U want recognition n respect? u can't get that by being quitters. N who cares what ppl will think of u. U r not here for their approval but to have fun. Now come back n say to the others "We r here to stay n if u don't like it then u leave". I did that all the time n usually they close the site or ban me b4 I would leave :P

I agree with you Sandie. This site has been highly informative and that's one of it's main purposes,so sure reading a group friends exchange of jokes can be entertaining for some time, but then it's not rescourceful to any of the visitors on the site. and I guess after time it would get old.

...Like nature regenerates itself, after lightning and a forest fire, new trees will grow and the forest will be green again.

I always wondered where these people worked. Or did they have a job at all. One girl admitted to spending her time on QL during “long working hours?!? Can you imagine the arrogance of publicly admitting that, with all the complaints we hear about customer service in Doha…did they work in that field by any chance? I was reading another girl saying during a daytime conversation “we’re all here guys… come on out now…; but who’s “we???… could “we use Q-Tel phones instead? One guy was proudly bragging about knowing the list of countries who sat on the UN Security Council in the last 15 years….. but, who cares?!?! Is Google to be memorized like a holy book?

Perhaps some people are very bored and don’t know what to do with themselves. If you spend that much time on the net, on blogs and what not, something got to be lacking in your system. I hope QL will become the site I knew when I first joined. I also wish these people will find their inner peace.

Mmmm.... would seem like I really touched a nerve with some people.... I cannot undertand why this has turned into a nasty mudslinging match.

All I was asking is that when a serious thread is in motion, that others don't hi-jack it for there own personal conversations with other members.... What is so difficult about that?

Some people really do only come here for information, and they don't want to know about DC, DG and the gang's personal relationships with each other.....

Koby, what is YOUR problem? You seem to have major issues in life.... why on earth would you want to post such ugly sentiments on a VERY public site?

Qatari, are you not going to say something about the ugliness that is blackening the good name of QL?

I am surprised that someone like Koby has been allowed to be so rude to other members and then get away with it....

I hope that Koby realises that his behaviour on this site can reflect very badly on the rest of us..... What must new users think?

sammie, Alexia tried it before you. You're advertising for a bunch of people who kept on hijacking other people's threads. The address was posted here already so no need for your sly advertising methods. Keep them for your work. How was your dinner the other night?

They could've bantered all they liked in their own threads and kept on creating new ones. Instead they act like kids, "I don't wanna play with you" and go off and start their own games when they're told to stick to the point.

Tough.

They lacked etiquette when they did that. Someone would post a question and these guys would have 3 or 4 pages of total rubbish "banter" as you call it unrelated to the person's original comment/question.

Been to their "forum", more like someone's private chat room.

People who register and post do it because they want to know about Qatar from us who live here, whether it's the price of Pampers or how long a drive it is from Dafna to Al Sadd.

This is Qatar Living; it's a place of entertaiment but at the same time a valuable resource and it will continue Living with or without the immature and childish defectors who essentially defecated over other people's posts.

No doubt Xena was right about asking people not to banter on topics. For the ones who want to read about a particular subject, it is to say the least, annoying, having to read through certain peoples' IRRELEVANT chats. It's to everbody's undestanding that this site is nobody's monopoly, and posts don't have an expiration date after which ''hijacking'' is allowed. It's clearly not about depriving freedom of expression as some implied, it's only a matter of being considerate to people who want to be informed and inform about a certain topic.

On the other hand, I didn't expect to see people leave, and this does not make me happy.

cheers to all, see I am one of the few that posts questions --you know the idiotic posts--about finding rice krispies and such, but I still scroll through all the bantering, sometimes depending if I want to, and I enjoy it. So I don't know how DG and QC think they are offending people yeah sure a couple might complain...and want to fight you etc. etc.**remember good 'ol saker, but there are a LOT more ppl. reading and enjoying your witty remarks back and forth. It's not that we are intimidated to join we don't because umm, I know I am not creative enough. I think Qatari has some pretty cool ideas of haviing you know seperate group chats that way you can still talk about WHATEVER you want if ppl. don't like it, too bad. I do agree that hi-jacking threads should be kept to a minimum or zero if possible.

but, Qatari he/she (don't know why everyone assumes the creator of the site has to be male)seems to be working at it. FAQ's spot will be cool and needed. but you know what? ppl like the human response they get off the internet...that's why when you do answer someone's question, they will ask it again...and again..and again.

let's just enjoy one of the super few fun things to do in Qatar.

shucks!! am I bantering??

By yalla• 12 Sep 2006 23:24

First off, I agree Xena brought up a valid point.

But from what I understand this is a free forum and I truly thank Qatari for providing such a great space.

Yes, sometimes the jokes

might go out of hand, but so what? Aren't we all adults?

Isn't this the internet?

For what it's worth, I enjoyed reading the banter, the jokes.

(I simply chose not to join in because I'm not so quick with jokes but that does not mean I don't like to have a laugh)

I enjoyed reading the discussions that would sometimes get over-heated.

I enjoyed it because it was real, human interaction.

If i wasn't in the mood for such banter, I would skip the pages.

If i needed specific information, I would type the keyword in the search box.

To those of you who have decided to leave, DG, QatarCat, Fish, Giasi and Super7 and all the other contributors, I am sorry to see you go. It's not always fun living as an expat, and you were like a breath of fresh air.

As we are a lot that we are annoyed by the people that are using this forum for their personal chats I think that these 3-4 guys that are doing this should stop it. doha girl and Qatarcat although I find very funny the way that you respond to criticism I should mention that if I was in your position I would say that I am sorry and I would start to respect others’ request. It is interesting though because you rarely meet such spoiled persons as you are. If you want to leave because you find that the site is repeating the same subjects it is ok but to answer: “And exactly why can't we brag about stuff its another thing. The other people had given you a lot of “value by trying to find alternatives for you to talk for your silly things that you obviously find more interesting than the repeating questions of that site. You don’t deserve such kindness; I hope that your tediousness during your working time will not make you to change opinion, bye bye.

Are you really serious? All of you?

If the author of a post does not want to see any jokes about this topic, then he simply can mark it with "JOKES ARE NOT AVAILABLE".

& if the author does not mind it, then there must be written automatically "JOKES ARE AVAILABLE".

That's an idea for Administrator of this site.

xena has a point but some ppl just used it to beat it to death. a garbage thread was created yesterday, what did others want, offer our laptops? dismantle our keyboards:((

im not sure if anyone has noticed it but due to the bantering, ppl were logged on here most of the day available to answer questions faster.

although the "thread jackers" we're lost wandering in threads at times, they have contributed to the ambiance...ok, not all appreciated or have seen the humor and i know clicking on pages and pages are a pain esp if u'r on dial up, but point is, a request was posted, ppl apologized, the others could have just let it go.

some seemed wanted humiliation not just apology.

let me just say that dg, qc, fish, giasi and others who are leaving were great contributors to this site and made my learning about qatar more fun, part of my curiousity and aprehension about qatar is how ppl interact. i wish there were real pics here so if and when i go to qatar, i'd know from whom to run away from:))

I joined QL 2 days ago on the recommendation of DG and Mochafrap. It seemed like a fun site that was helpful, provided information and yet did not take itself too seriously. I was obviously wrong about the last point.

I am dissapointed in reading this thread as it makes a bad impression about this site. Since DG, mocha and QC are leaving I have decided that this is my que to exit as well.

It's been fun, good luck!

This is indeed a sad day. I remember joining this forum literally days after Qatari created it. I have seen people come and go and have seen bad days and good days.

It is true that our “group has often carved itself a small corner her in QL to joke around and generally be ourselves. We have always helped people whenever we could and it was satisfying to know I also may have assisted someone to make an easier decision, or get a better salary or find a better school etc etc.

I may have, on occasion, clashed swords with some of you, but please remember it was never malicious. All in the spirit of intelligent debate. If I hurt anyone’s feelings, I apologise, I assure you it will never happen again.

In addition to what Qatarcat said, we really do feel that other members may have felt intimidated or left out because of us. We would hate to feel we have scared anyone into silence. I think we made a positive impact on this forum and I will give credit where it is due, we made it fun. However, our time has passed and we leave it to the very knowledgeable members left here who I am sure can provide the support and information that the forum needs

Its with a heavy heart that I leave you all. This is only lightened by the fact that I met some very special, sincere and honest people. It is a shame I could not meet more of you.

My blog is still out there and you are welcome to email me from it should you feel I can assist in any way.

God bless you all and I wish you success, health and happiness.

With sincere respect

Before I leave Qatar Living as well I think I should tell you that you were absolutely right in your post and none of our departures happened because of it.

New developments! Looks like all the interesting people have left the building. Personally I'd rather converse with Super and DG than TG. Didn't Qatari just say that this forum was originally created for friends to chat about everything? Call it a public board or community website or whatever you like but who has the right to decide what should be posted? Novita why you think you can lay down the rules what can be said and what not? Knowing QC in real life I can assure you she writes exactly as she speaks in front of the public and I havent yet seen her have any trouble with the public. Its a shame really, I just joined and now this! I was just told by QC that they are creating a new forum for people who dont mind their sense of humour and language. You guys enjoy yourselves here.

apart of QL, i am on in others site too. Like EG and BE who connect people living in Qatar.

IMHO, cyber forum is public board. I do think banter like sex pimp and others should be keep away from the board. You might find somebody you can get along well through this board, but once it get personal and private (again IMHO) you should go some where else with more privacy. Or in another word, 'get a room'.

And also members on this board come from all walks of life, different background of culture, education and way of thinking. What acceptable for you might be unacceptable for others.

Try to think that will you say the same thing in front of the public with your writing/posting?

I love this board because the different background of the members. Unlike in EW that you have to be women to join the board.

because we don't know the difference between critique and blatant offensive attitude. and because we don't know the difference between a discussion and informative posts. please don't insult my intelligence..i don't have an IQ of a cucumber, thank you very much.

i'll quote what someone else said on this website once: "prunes..good for constipation". enjoy your ostentatious rubbish my friend.. ;)

Its not even an accusation..its non-sense..and 80% of my posts are about life in Qatar or social/political environment..and I am all for competitive and intellectual arguments with facts and figures...There is nothing pretentious about it....One needs to live in a democratic setup and learn to debate to know that all arguments or fights are not personal behaviour...and critique is not insult...

When we talk about changes..we should not forget that lots of other prominent members are not visiting the site or contributing any more..probably there is reason for it...

By Qatarcat• 12 Sep 2006 09:36

Thank you so much for your message to DG and myself. It means a lot to us. Dohagirl and I feel like we should probably explain more about why we have chosen to leave QL. It is not because of the “no bantering thread which we actually totally agree with. Everyone here knows we are usually the first ones to offer an advice or opinion and help others out. We joined this forum to connect with other people in Qatar, learn a thing or two, and make those long working hours seem a little shorter with a good discussion. However, now we feel like QL has changed to the point that we do not feel welcome on the site anymore. This is not just because of the attitudes of others, rather it is our attitude. Our jokes, morals and values often clash with those of the other members and we feel it is unfair of us to continue forcing our way of thinking on them. We are tired of trying to be something we are not – we are not always politically, religiously or morally correct. We are tired of constantly being reprimanded or patronised for being ourselves. Yes we did hijack threads and made fun of things which perhaps are not funny to other people, and we did banter for hours about sex with vegetables and pimping and dating and such like. We didn’t anticipate it would cause others so much distress. We were there for everyone who needed our help or wanted to laugh with us and we were rarely expecting others to take us seriously. Obviously our attitude is not welcome on the community/family forum, nor do we particularly enjoy being called a “live performance gang by other prominent members. Our apologies, Qatari.

Qatar Living is truly a great site, and an excellent resource, but is not the site we joined anymore.

We wish you the best.

DG & QC.

AT the end of the day lets rename this site Qatar Living fo people who have sense of humour!

God people are leaving left right and centre! We have to put up with people emailing with "be my friend, wife wanted" and how many times do we have to go over the accommodation costs?????

Think i will just wait till i get to 1000 then i am off as well!

With respect to the babbling on in other threads ever heard of a conversation the questions always gets answered then most of the time someone gives a view and off it goes!

no offence. but we really couldn't care less about what you find to be humorous or otherwise. i don't recall any of our jokes being addressed to you..so really..if you don't like it..that's your own problem. definitely not the end of the world.

and in spirit of the whole "truth hurts" attitude you seem to be taking. yes you do patronize everyone..and yes you do have a problem with almost everyone on here (i obviously needn't refresh your memory. all it takes is going back to all previous discussions you've had with others, serious or otherwise).

I dont know who is patronizing whom...and I dont know if its funny that a thread on husband and wife has discussions on live performance with a pimp thrown in...

I have no problems with anyone...and I am fine with all the banter..confined to a single thread/threads with clear title...

I can't stand a Ramadan thread getting "physical".

Have fun...

Qatari this sounds like an absolutely brilliant idea. please do let us know if you require any help with your new projects..i'm sure a lot will be more than glad to help.

that being said i just have to say that it REALLY irks me when the likes of tg seize each opportunity to patronize all the regulars on this website. exactly who died and made you moderator on this forum? and what gives you the right to tell people what they should or should not discuss, or how to behave? We're not always going to discuss serious things..GET OVER IT! just cause you suck the fun out of everything doesn't mean everybody has to follow suit. xena made a valid point and we all agreed she was right..i don't remember her saying anything about not making jokes or having fun on this website.

When QL was setup, it was just meant to be a small message board for a few friends in Doha to share intersesting and fun things. I don't want to lose that spirit of it being a place for friends. The QL lounge form was created just for people to chill out in and have a chat.

If you want to discuss whatever feel free. The way this site is run is pretty transparent. I think we (as regulars) have established some broad bounds over what is acceptable to our community.

I'm not sure why everyone is trying to jump ship based on something that I thought was pretty reasonable - it's something I've mentioned in a few threads as well. No one said that chatting about social/political/cultural/whatever wasn't allowed. In fact, there is a whole forum section dedicated too it.

I'd hate to see people leave...(plus how can you leave before Sheebu has retrned?)

By butterfly• 12 Sep 2006 08:53

I will miss you both. I loved reading your comments. I'm sorry it has come to this.

Erm...guys I think we're over thinking this one. All Xena is saying is that if someone says "Is Qatar Academy a good school for my kid who is interested in maths and music" then keep the responses on that specific thread to that topic.

We're busy working on an F.A.Q. for newcomers to Qatar so we don't get the same questions over and over. Hopefully once it's out it will stop the same questions over and over.

The political and social discussions are fantastic and a great part of QL! Keep them rolling...just keep them in their own topics. It's just makes life easier for everyone...

We're heading to the first annivarsary of QL soon (yay!) and are working on some fantastic features for the site. I don't want to say too much yet but one of them is the ability for people to form their own sub-groups on the site. That way you can have a seperate sections for people with specific interests (like say "soccer club", "south africans in qatar", "arabic learners", "dohagirl and friends", etc"). I think that will also help keep things more focused...

When I'm rolling this out all the regulars (you know who you are) are going to be the first people I ask about what groups we should roll out and if they want to own a group!

Basically, this is a community for us all. I don't want anyone to leave or feel unwelcome...

I guess it goes without saying that I will no longer post here either, for all the reasons DG has just mentioned and for a few of my own.

I am grateful for the information this forum used to provide in the past, and I am glad I met a lot of really nice people. This goes to Qatari (with utmost respect and admiration), Aisha, Bullsshake, Doctora, E46 and others who I had interesting discussions with, and to all the wonderful people I got to meet in real life, or shared a laugh on the blogs.

As for Qatar Living - I wish it all the best. After all, people will always need to know whether QR 6000 is enough to live on in Doha.

It's been fun indeed. Good bye all!

;-)

I'm very sorry that you all feel this way. Obviously the QL I joined no longer exists. The QL I joined had interesting political and social discussions. This one has simply turned into the same questions about whether or not a salary is good and other such questions, that I've done my best to answer, but frankly get a little dull after awhile.

The QL I joined allowed me to meet a great group of excellent people, whom, without this site, I never would have met. Yes, we like to have a laugh, and we have hijacked threads, but we all have a sense of humour and enjoy having a laugh during dull hours at work.

However, since you all appear to dislike our sense of humour so much and I respect your wishes I will no longer post on this forum.

It's been fun.

Come to think of it...why would a group of people who are friends outside this forum and talking to each other on phone (Local calls are free)..would come to the net to brag about stuff which no one is interested in??

Are their private lives so exciting that it needs to be discussed on QL ( A community resource forum ) till the last thread?? but then self-indulgent triumphalism has no limits...

I've been posting important questions (at least for me) on this site, and frankly, it's frustrating to see that there are tons of comments on the thread, but nothing related to the question. And scrolling up or down to check if anything relevant was posted takes a lot of time, and all you get to read are insults being thrown about. I mean, if you guys can't stick to the topic, would you mind creating your own threads so that those who need REAL answers don't end up wasting time reading through unrelated comments? Thank you.
