Transporting our car from the U.S.

Hi All,
I have some questions regarding transporting our car from the U.S. to Doha.

1. Is there any restriction on the color of the turn signal? Does it have to be yellow or red is OK?.

2. How does the 5-year-old importing rule work? Our car is a 2002 model. Does it mean that the car can be brought into the country by the end of 2006 or 2007?

Based on the notes on the web site, I would expect that most of you suggest against bringing the car into Qatar. But after debating it for a while, b/c of several reasons, we would like to ship it over anyway.

I would greatly appreciate any clarification on the rules.

Thanks,
Nina.

Nina,

Did you happen to find out anything definitive about shipping a car from US? In particular, the 5 year rule? I am in a similar situation. I have a 1999 ford mustang.

Any info would help,

Thanks,

Thanks Shahsab. Please let me know if you find anything. Let me know also about the Gift Scheme. I want to ship a few cars there. If I can make a few bucks from some of the dealers why not.

Not myself,

duties are less then before, I shipped a car on my passport through someone in Gift Scheme when I was in UAE, the dealers pay you around 30 to 50 thousand rupees to use ur passport only.

I am not sure of the rates for Pakistan. But can get details.

Shah,

Have you ever shipped a car to Pakistan? I know they have high axes but was trying to get an idea of the amount.

Do you happen to know if used cars are subject to any taxes?

Thanks again,

Nina

Definately Texas is very Hot,

I have been into car importing business in Dubai, the cost of car shipping from houston is around 1400 to 2000$(depends upon car size) normaly 3 to 4 cars fit in one container but if big jeep three 3.

American specs are different then gulf specs car. Radiator, battery, auto lights, and different. Though no modification is required and it works well here in gulf reigon but still there are some rules to follow by gulf states.

I dont know about Qatar rule, 5 years or more. But in UAE car upto 10 or more years old can be shipped and registered.

2002 model will not be a problem, just port clearing and customs you have to go through and register the car here with Traffic department which is called (Al-Maroor in arabic).

Enjoy.

Gumbo,

I see you have never been to the Gulf Coast of Texas. People were asking me all the time when we moved here is it hot. My reply was just like home. It is not the heat its the humidity.

The car should be fine. I would make sure I have the AC serviced especially get the compressor checked. Also check to see if the dealer here carries the parts for your vehicle. If not

then shipping parts can be a delay and more money.

Thanks much Gumbo and M3 for your responses.

We have looked into the temperature issue and we should be OK. Thanks for bringing it up though!

I don’t think the Marhaba Magazine is sold here in the U.S.

Would it be possible for you to give me the phone number of the traffic department?

Regards,

Nina.

Today's cars are tested in extreme heat and cold. They are much more thoroughly stressed in adverse conditions. Some are tested in Death Valley and others put through their paces in the desert outside Dubai.

I have seen several US imports on the roads in Doha.

If delicate instruments like Lamborghinis and Ferraris can survive the weather here so can an auto imported from the US of A.

Yes, Kuwait and Riyadh are hotter, but she didn't refer to them.

Kuwait and Riyadh are much hotter than Doha, by the way.

Texas, Oklahoma and Florida do not have near the absolute temperature as Qatar.

would the airconditioning not work well here? If it's designed to work in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida why not Qatar?

Nina,

It is my understanding that as long as your car is a US spec auto then you can import it into Qatar. Besure to contact the traffic department for more specific information. If you have a Marhaba magazine their telephone number is listed in it.

You are aware that your US A/C will most likely not be able work well in this environment?
