Monkeys, parrot eggs etc....

Working with animal welfare in Qatar I am becoming increasing concerned with the adverts posted in the classifieds on this website. Allowing adverts for the sale of parrot eggs, and monkeys is un-acceptable. I have contacted the local CITES office who are currently investigating these adverts.  There is something suspicious about some of the email contact addresses and this is being followed up.

Import licences and proof of ownership must be provided by people owning these animals and I have not found one legal animal so far!!!!

Putting a note on regarding pet dogs and cats is OK, as long as the owners are checking out the prospective homes but exotic animals should not be allowed.

I am pleased to see that no comments are added or questions asked by forum members and visitors, this is encouraging!

Note to Capuchin moneky owner, if you are genuine and need to find a home for this animal please contact Qatar Animal Welfare Society who will be able to assist you with finding a sanctuary far more suitable for him.

Would it be possible for the site owner to check out the classifieds posted and remove these un-suitable ones or is it just me that has a problem with them?

Please do not be mislead, the TNR project is not working on a low budget. They were given a huge budget to set this up and run it! I was also extremely upset at the conditions initially, things have got slightly better recently.......

I have been to the animal department near Parachute r/a. I went into the operating room and was disgusted. It was very dirty. I know they are working on a low budget but the table that they examine the animals on was disgusting.

It's just very scary that so many cats have "disappeared". I mean really, we see the same cats at the same dumpsters everyday for 2 years and now they're gone. The weather is cooler now and the cats are usually beginning to come out during the day but I haven't seen many.

There is a big push on at the moment to secure charity status or funding for the shelter to stay open if atal possible. QAWS are not accepting animals at the moment and are making concentrated (successful) efforts to re-home the animals currently in the shelter.

Lets hope that the attempts are successful and that the animals are all re-homed, placed in temporary foster homes or ultimately the shelter manages to secure it's future and stay open.

'Ops Centre' is my reference, it is hardly that! The Animal Resource Department (buidling by parachute r/bt) is responsible for the TNR project.

They have government vets, pre op and post op facilities - still currently under renovation! The cats are taken there and assessed. Those fit for neutering are operated on and held for a minimum recovery period before being returned. Those unsuitable are humanely euthanised.

There have been many cases of cats not being returned, records are kept so theoretically you should be able to trace what happened to the cats.

How long ago did the cats disappear? Stupid question but is there major construction nearby, many cats move further on in these circumstances (or on to the site if they are lucky enough to find kind workers to feed them!)

The programme is being overseen by WSPA and The Qatar Cat Coalition, you can check with them for more information, through The Friends of the Environment Centre.

Poppy - Can you give some more details on this "ops centre" and how they operate? The cats in my locality have vanished without a trace.

The municipality are doing the TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return programme)

Many are released back to their usual spots, any injured or diseased cats are humanely euthansied. They are not relocated as this does not work. They are still fixing them but not in such great numbers as when they started. I visit the ops centre and have worked with the trappers collecting and returning.

As for your cats, as long as they are wearing collars they will be released immediately if they wander into the traps. They will not be picked up if they are clearly identifiable as owned cats.

I too saw this post and found it a bit sad. I have a question about the reduction of cats in Qatar. I know that they are taking them and fixing them. They say they are releasing them back to the streets. If so, where? I don't even see the "Regulars" at the dumpsters anywhere. If you return a cat to a different area then which it has lived its whole life, they could die. Also, a reliable source told me that they are no longer fixing them, they are putting them to sleep. Is there any truth to this? I have 8 cats and don't want to see this happen seeing as how they go outside often.
