NANDO"S DISCRIMINATION
I went to the city centre with my wife and 2 young children and followed a Qatari family as they walked into the FAMILY SECTION at Nando's restuarant. The Qatari family were escorted to a table and I stopped next to a table which was being cleaned. I asked the waiter if it was free and he relied "yes" but requested one minute to have it fully cleaned for me. As I was waiting, another waiter approached me and asked me to follow him. To my surprise, he led me to the main restuarant area and asked me to wait for another ten minutes for a table to become free. I then pointed to the table which was being cleaned in the family section and told him that I would like to sit in the family section. He then went on to say that, that tabel had been taken. He also added that the customer had gone to the toilet. I said that I would wait next to that table to see if the customer was going to return. I said this because I did not beleieve what he was saying. He then went on to say that I must wait for a table to be free in the main restaurant and again re-iterated that the family section table had been taken. Just then, the manager walked passed and saw me standing in the middle of the resturant with the family and immediately called me to the original table in the family section and sat us down. The only reason why the manager did this was because he saw me arguing with the waiter and because I was blocking the narrow passage. There are plenty of areas with Family Sections around Doha but how many are in disguise as areas only for QATARI'S. The waiter was clearly lying and not a good lier either. As I left, I pointed out to the same waiter that he should check out the toilets because his customer for that table had not returned. This is not acceptable. If they wish to separate the Qatari's from the rest of the public then they should state QATARI'S ONLY. After all, this is what they are doing but they don't have the bottle to put up the sign. I'm sure I am not the only one to have experienced this unexceptable discrimatory behaviour.
sorry
Quick question if I may,
"An expat" worker subjected you "an expat" to discrimination....and u say it's Qataris' fault???
I truely fail to see it!!!!
Mike:
"Let us boycott all these f**cking places making discrimination and racism"
For your information - Nando is not the place to start with :-)
Let’s start within and then ...
Tyler:
Discrimination is not the product of 3rd world. "Third World" is the product of discrimination. It’s the product of powerful over weak, rich over poor and so on.
i agree with you mike, we should boycott all kinds of discrimination and racism.no one should ever face any kinds of discrimination.
but this could have been an isolated case of one illiterate employee trying to impress the local customer instead of looking at all customers equally.we could give him the benefit of doubt.the waiters do that, they think if they impress the qataris they will benefit somehow, and i have seen many of them try it.
however having said that, i must mention that Nandos does lack in their service, esp the city centre branch. i have had to ask them to correct my orders several times, is it because of incompetence (they never listen to the orders properly or make a mistake when writing down the order)or racism, i wouldnt know, but i make sure to get what i want, even if it means making a fuss.
happy heart
drive safe because someone is waiting for you at home
I hate racism and all kind of discrimination, and the worst one are those applied in areas such as Restaurant,Clubs etc where you go to spend your money.
The information reported by Jaq786 looks like a discrimination and I can understand his deception because the biggest humiliation which a man can undergo is to be humbled in front of his family.
I will put NANDO'S in my black list.
Let us boycott all these f**cking places making discrimination and racism.
Jag786, I’m really sorry that you experienced this . It’s unfair. I wish you never face such discrimination again.
This event will be documented with pictures and mp4 movie in the web.
Enjoy..then walk off
-----------------separate note---------------------------------
remember...they may spit at your drink...you will not even know it...
I never try to antagonize the waiters...what they can do to our food is what i am worried even if we win and get our rights back...
or after the meal then make noise...
Tyler, your quote of "Just remember that we are by and large in a third world country from 30-50 years ago by western standards. Things will change eventually but until then forgive them their trespasses as we are all god's children." rings though me when I hear so much about the cultural differences, well, more mind-sets, I can relate so much to us here in England 60 years ago, we were bigoted by lack of education to other cultures and very much driven by the masses in attitude and by our forefathers.
It's a South African restuarant, and Nando's S A would have sent someone here to train the staff in good hospitality etiquette(which is what all franchises in S A do when they sell a store)... which will account for the PROMPT service you don't see at other places.....
That is the one thing that gets me..... back home... we get our drinks before our meal, not with it, and the waiter/waitress keeps checking that everything is ok.... and clears the table as soon as your plate is empty.....
The staffers at eateries here, leave a lot to be desired....
X
Never had any problems at Nando's. In fact they have the nicest staff in the whole Qatar.
Thanks for your thoughts on this topic, its good to hear that some of you have had no problems at Nando's. I agree the country is progressing in some areas and other areas are playing catch up.
I did not have to deal with my official paperwork but have heard plenty of hair raising stories about the whole process.
I've noticed this at several restaurants
...it's retarded but nothing new.
And this ONLY happened at Nando's?!!
Looks like you didn't have to deal with ur formal papers
Never had an issue with Nandos and their family section. I go there with co-workers for lunch every once in a while. As long as we have atleast one female member in our group, they don't have a problem with us occupying the family section.
jaq786 - I think your problem was the underpaid/untrained/unmotivated waiter.
Hmmm- which personality is coming out today?OMG...there is discrimination in Qatar? People acting like it is 50 years ago in a third world country? Oh no way this could be happening in a modern progressive country.
Just remember that we are by and large in a third world country from 30-50 years ago by western standards. Things will change eventually but until then forgive them their trespasses as we are all god's children.
My husband loved Avocado juice. One night we went to cinema, and have 30 mins wait before the show start. Thought we go to Nando's to have a drink there. The place was quiet ... lots of table empty. When i asked there by my self, can we sit down and have a drink? The waitress said that it is only for dining.
Then after that my husband approach them (the manager)... asking why on earth we can't sit down to buy a drink while most of their table empty? I guess because 'Asian' different with 'caucasian'. So the manager let us sit down and buy the drink.
