Mohammad85,

1. yes the law will apply to all companies.

2. a branch will have all of the legal rights that a company has, although there are some requirements for opening a branch i.e. you should have an initial letter of intent or contract for service in place.

3. if you email me I can send you a document which my firm produce called "Doing Business in Qatar" which should have all of your answers. Otherwise you can go to a law firm or accounting firm here.

We are almost certain that the foreign capital investment law will be amended to allow wholly owned foreign companies but we are not sure exactly when they will take effect. My guess is the law will be out in late February.

Its expensive to incorporate a company here, it will probably cost you around 80,000 QR all up, unless you want to do all of the stuffing around yourself (i.e. running to the Ministry of E&C, back to the Chamber of Commerce, to the Immigration Department, to the Municipality, back to the Ministry etc) then it could be about QR 60,000. But you will go insane.

You can open a branch of a foreign company without requiring a Qatari or GCC sponsor. Do you have a company in Iran? By establishing a branch you can retain full ownership and control, and you can sponsor yourself and open the bank accounts etc without requiring the Qatari to give you permission every step of the way.

Good luck!

Hi there;

I wanted to open a couple of small sized companies in Qatar and in Dubai.... but the sponsorship law has stopped me from doing so. I heard that it will change soon and businessmen will be able to own 100% of their investments. I'm not sure why this new developlement but i think it is to do with joining the WTO it is one of the conditions that need to be fulfiled.

1- You need a Qatari guy who will hold minimum 51% of company shares (by law). he will have full control over your life. ie, u need his permission to leave the country, issue a driver's license, buy a car, ...)

Then you need to prove that you have a place for the company (electricity bill, Banner)

It will take you around 2 weeks to finish all the paper works needed to get registered and have a company number.

As for openning a US dollar saving account, as far as I know you can't until you have qatari residence. But you can open a Qatar Reyal saving accounts.
