Is there a customs duty on household shipments?

Lawrence
By Lawrence

We're in the process of getting quotes to move our household goods from Dubai to Qatar when one of the moving company reps shocked us by saying that our shipment will be charged with a 5% duty, based on the customs dept. estimate of its value. The rep said this was a new policy of the Qatar government.

In looking at some old comments on this site, I saw a reference to a 5% duty that is routinely waived for used household goods, but reportedly the shipping agent has to work with the customs dept. to get this exemption thus causing some delay in clearance.

Can anyone advise what the real situation is? Is there a new policy of charging duty? Have any recent arrivals been hit with a 5 percent duty?

mmmm..... Ty, do you remember how fast my hand movements were the other night?.... I am referring to the slap on the back of the head....

Now if you care for a repeat performance.... DON'T bring me any of that bacon you had..... k..... and if I am right as to the origin... you are both in for a good whipping for eating without me.....

Soft american back needs a soft mattress?

Too bad you didn't just ship the stuff via USPS since I have yet to have any customs issues rich.

I had some golf clubs (not new) and some suits, shirts and a coffee machine shipped to me here. It was a nightmare. First the shipper lost the consignment in Doha airport and it took 5 weeks to locate. Then I had to produce invoices for the value for customs even though I told them I had bought the items years ago and hadn't kept the receipts (who the hell does?). Also, all the items were accurately listed on the shipping docket. In the end, I had to type an invoice myself and put some best guess values against the items and then I was charged 5% of those values. It was a real pain and I am minded not to ship anything again even though I desperately want a decent mattress (the ones here are crap and slightly harder than a cement floor).

Well - I'm bringing my stuff from Bahrain and prior to that Riyadh - and Yeah Xyned - it is too good for IKEA.

Blazing Heat, Soft Headed Arabs, Spoilt Lifestyle? - I don't see any expat exodus from here Xyned so it must have something going for it.

Seriously though - This has got me concerned - does anyone have any info on this? (I know cars are taxed if you bring one in)

lawrence. wanna bring in your stuff from home eh?

5% far too much? Ikea, Home center etc not good enough for you? is it some sorta sentimental attachment to your furniture?

Australia charges a fair bit. Certain household are permitted free of charge subject to restrictions such as being a resident, not purchased over an overseas stay, yadda yadda.

Got a new contract or something? xclnt... blazing heat, soft headed arabs, icky well buttered spoilt lifestyle.

+ point. excellent shopping experience compared to uk/oz.

Superb roads unlike the ultra narrow brit roads. Enjoy H20like price on fuel. You can additionally quote to your friends "braving the arabs!" (example: hubba bubba, movie:click).

cheerios
