Closure of QAWS

Poppy
By Poppy

Sadly I must announce the closure of Qatar Animal Welfare Society. Despite our best endeavours we are unable to sustain the shelter any longer.

Please could I ask that everyone spreads the word as soon as possible to assist us to re-home the remaining animals in our care. We have a small number of dogs and cats, all would make superb pets and are desperately seeking the right owners.

Along with the dogs and cats we have rabbits, ducks, chickens, geese, even a turkey, donkeys and a bull!!!

We will continue to maintain these animals for as long as it takes to find them secure homes but will cease all other operations with immediate effect.

Although we are closing we still follow strict policy to ensure that these animals are placed for life and not just on a whim. If you are looking for a new pet please call 528 6335 to arrange a visit to the shelter.

All mixed breeds, no pedigrees, no puppies/kittens - well socialised, house trained etc....Please visit www.qaws.org to view the pets available.

(Paws & Claws commercial Boarding Kennels & Cattery remains open as usual.)

my boys, (Todd and Ketchup), or now known as D'Artagnon and Aramis are settlling into their new home well....

They have become accustomed to eating fish every morning, and will sit outside my bedroom door meowing until I open up and head to the kitchen, where they will keep trying to steal the tuna as I am dishing it into there bowls...and all they want after that is loves and cuddles.

I am getting my pet therapy daily now, as I have missed my animal interaction and feel more relaxed when I get home and spend time with them....

When I went to collect them, I was so happy to see that almost all the pets had found homes.

Thanks Janet, will keep in touch...

So have all the dogs found homes, other than mum and pups? Has 'Sprout' managed to find a home? She really tugged at my heartstrings when I met her. It so sad that I can't have anymore animals. I'm really glad that Xena adopted the 2 cats, that great!

Come on people, there are still some animals waiting for a loving home. Help them!

A quick update on QAWS.

Thank you to QL members, word is spreading and the animals are finding new homes (Xena is now the proud 'Mum' of 2 cats) and Storm is heading off to his new home tomorrow. Now down to 3 cats!!!

Although we closed the doors we had to act on an emergency case, a Mum & 6 pups have landed on our doorstep. They are gorgeous and had to be helped. Please call Janet on 528 6335 if you or anone you know is looking for a puppy , not to mention a beautiful "Mum". They are mixed breed and will be medium size adult dogs. Photo's to follow later today.

It is such a worth while cause and I know that I should have done more but as with most things in life you have good intentions but time just slips away from you.

That said I would love to adopt more but I do not think that Kizzy and Orry would apprecaite a new comer to their happy home.

For those at QAWS, Kizzy surprised us with her age, the vet thought she was a couple months older than we thought. She has not grown much so I guess she is destined to look like a kitten. She is getting more socialble and will, every now and again, come sit on my lap. She still will not let me go to her.

Orry never shuts ups. She is constantly demanding a cuddle and who am I to refuse? She loves everyone and loves her belly being rubbed. She continues to have problems with her breathing but there seems that there is little we can do. Despite this she is happy and healthy (playing and eating)and that is the main thing.

Although completely different personalities they fit well together. When they are not fighting they are cuddled up together sleeping.

I would not be without them and I would not have them if it were not for Janet and those people that put in so many emotional hours.

Thank you and good luck.

The two inseperable boys - Todd & Ketchup - are still waiting for a family to adopt them. We also have Maisy & Dodge (not on the website) who are being looked after by a foster family. They are both lovely, sociable, neutered and again in-seperable.

I remember two little ones from the website, inseperables as you said, have someone adopt them?

By Moonbeam• 2 Mar 2007 15:43

The website has now been updated, as mentioned before.

Please take a look at it..........and spread the word. These animals need you!

I personally met "SPROUT" and instantly liked her. With two of my own rescues already, I cannot take any more animals. I wish I could help more. :(

So please check it out and spread the word. Adopt an animal!

Sorry but Maggie & Charlie have both been adopted BUT if you are able to take on a pair please consider Todd & Ketchup (see the website) they are inseperable and it's hard to find somebody prepared to take on the 2 together.

Fingers crossed, give me a call!

I am so sorry, I have not been able to do more.... I am still waiting on my boss to come back to me with details of the lady he said might be able to help.... its been about 3 months now.... He keeps telling me she is out of the country....

I desperately wanted to take those cats you had, and more so now that I am not bringing my GSD anymore. Can you tell me whether Maggie and Charlie are still available?

I am financially stable enough now to be able to take them to the vet if they need it....

It is so sad that it has finally come to this...

Thank you so much for your good works and the animals of this country will miss you so much...

I have just taken a dog from there yesterday called Fonz. Please spread the word and if you love animals, do not hezitate to go there and take one home with you. There is no friend more honest and devoted as a pet.

To bad this country is this way. Praise her work and hope we will take this as an example.

Thanks for all your work Janet.

As if animals are not having hard time already, and now come this closure..... I'm really feeling sad, but there isn't much I can offer, my home is very tight (thanks to the rents) and I have no space for any animals :(

One of the truest writings I have ever come across....

"The greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it's animals are treated"

Ghandi.

Sadly I think we must let QAWS go. As I am planning to move on from Qatar the facility will no longer be available for rescue, as many of you know I have run it privately on the site of the commercial kennels (Paws & Claws). The business will continue under new ownership but without financial and legal stability the rescue cannot continue.

There is another group of people planning to form a rescue group, please forward me your email addresses to pass on to them for future support.

Many Thanks.

I say we all print flyers on our computers and stick them to the rear windshield of our cars with something about QAWS.

Any ideas Poppy? What could we write?

Seeing as there is so much traffic, maybe if a bunch of us did this we could start spreading the word?

Or maybe sign a petition? And send it to His Highness?

By Moonbeam• 24 Feb 2007 08:58

I know shocking right? All It would take is to for the authorities to legalize the organization and so many problems could be solved, if not all.

K9 Friends, BSPCA (bahrain) and QAWS are all in the same bureaucratic sinkhole. The Middle East with all it wealth and power cannot even show to the world such a simple extension of basic morality.

Growing up in egypt I would witness farmers beating the donkeys which pulled their carts. As much as it horrified me, I understood one thing. How can you expect an uneducated and illiterate peasant to understand that animal cruelty is crime. But that is what I cannot comprehend here in the middle east. The locals are highly educated and also very wealthy per capita. So why do the authorities continue to allow such barbaric practices to continue unpunished and do nothing to help such a dedicated organisation bring awareness to the public? I am amazed to hear that K9 friends is still having problems. I would have thought that Dubai would be the first to make changes such as these, but obviously I was wrong. The middle east will always remain a third world country (in spite of all the luxury) until it changes it's human rights and animal rights policies.

As expats, none of us can really do much other than bring awareness and assist where we can. It is up to the local citizens of these countries to show that they are forward thinking and make the necessary changes.

Poppy,

So the road blocks are bureaucratic? Shocking?

what is the justification of the authorities in preventing an animal shelter from running?

Hmmm, I ran accross an article in the Khaleej Times about the closure of K9 Friends in the UAE, I suggest you check this out:

Hi All

Made me cry to see these nice comments....good to know that some people really do care.

Unfortunately money is not the only issue here, we have lots of pledges of support but we cannot accept them without legal charity status!

We have battled to find the right department, the right person and so on but cannot get through the minefield.

All is takes is the right person to say "yes you can do this" and QAWS would be secure. Anyone know The Emir? LOL

I feel sick to the stomach every time I see a stray animal on the street and would love to help all of them.

Unfortunately we are living in a society that has no tolerance for human life let alone animals, and have to deal with the fact that this isn't going to change. With the amount of money this country has, they should have 10 shelters, but instead are closing down the only one it has.

What is going to happen to all those animals in the future?

Are they going to feed rat poison to ALL of them?

It makes me so angry the way animals are treated, as if it's their fault they have to exist in such a miserable country and can't voice their opinions.

So let's do something about this so QAWS can stay open. I will do all I can to help!!!!

Come on guys; let's try to make a difference!

Peace xx

I agree, is there anything we can do? Like a donation Drive?

Mohammed, it's so sad how few muslims feel the way you do, and sadder still that they hide behind Islam to excuse the mistreatment of some animals. You are so correct, Islam is a nurturing and caring religion. Why is there so much complacency here with regards to animals?

It's funny, I was just watching on the TV, a guy getting arrested for mistreating goats. He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted for the death of a goat due to cruelty. And one automatically assumes... A GOAT!?? That's going to be on my dinner menu tonight?

The thing is, humanity and kindness is the obligation of anyone that decides to keep animals; whether it be for food or as a pet. There is no justification for cruelty, ever.

Just think, 800 animals owe their lives to one organisation, and many helping hands. I think people can make a difference. So come on.....let's do something to help QAWS.

could we do something to keep it running? That would be amazing i wish people would realize how amazing it is to have pets in your life - my two dogs are both rescue one from the uk and one i found out here - a saluki and he has made a amazing friend. The thing is the amount of people out here with kids who stop where were walking the dogs and let there children watch - the amount of kids who want to stroke them - there is passion in the childrens eyes for pets.. where do they lose that passion for animals? Maybe we can do something to help?

love life!

It is so ironic that a country that adheres strictly to Islamic principals does not advocate the welfare of it's Animals.

Islam is perhaps the most explicit Abrahamic religion when it comes to the caring and nurturing of animals.

It is sad to hear about QAWS's closure.. even sadder that noone cares.

IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO KEEp QAWS RUNNING? A donation drive? etc etc?

Please Let us know!

I am really sorry to hear that it will close. Janet and all that have dedicated time, effort and money to this amazing project, you are an inspiration to so many; and I can't even begin to imagine the sadness a loss you feel at having to select the more 'adoptable' friends you have made there. It is so sad that people continue to purchase animals, breed them without thought or care; instead of adopting. With two rescue dogs of my own from Bahrain, and a third which I am also trying to home, I know how hard it is here to find loving homes.

It makes me sick to the stomach that in spite of the wealth and education in this country, animals here are still viewed (well sadly most humans are too) as accessories and discarded when there is no use for them. It is disgusting, and should be punished as done in 'CIVILISED' countries. I am sick tired of being politically correct. Qatari people should show an ounce of humanity, and maybe they will receive the respect they deserve from the rest of the world.

For those offended by such a statement........I challenge you....prove me wrong. Prove to me that Qatar can change....that all it takes is ONE person that CARES that can make a difference. The people that have dedicated themselves to help these poor animals have shown incredible strength of character and resolution. How many Qatari’s have given their help? So prove me wrong.

Poppy, let me know how I can be of help. You can contact me through my profile.

Hi Poppy,

this is very sad news. Such a good facility must close. The real background for closing QAWS is what I think just more then this message.

I’m here in Doha since August 2006 and understand that certain “THINGS” here in Qatar are different then in Europe / Germany. This is one more reason why we (family) have to re-think our decision “moved to Qatar”. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Fortunately we can decide whether staying or leaving and this makes it a lot easier for us. When will they announce the closure of QDC? How would Qatar looks like if all foreigners would be out of the country? Tip of the iceberg: I think that the reader knows what kind of message I mean. Still: sad news. QAWS, you have done a great job, thanks. Janet, we will spread the news.

This is sad news indeed. Janet and her team need to be commended for the years of hard and loving work they have put in. Unfortunately in a country that cares little for people, and even less for animals, this was an uphill battle from the outset.

Everyone please spread the word to get these remaining animals adopted!

Poppy, very sad to hear that you have had to close your doors. I would love to take an animal in but unfortunatley I am in a flat and often gone for 12 hours at a time and it just isn't fair to have an animal. I will spread the word around and hopefully you will find homes for all the animals.
