If you are worried go get a blood test done to see if you have been exposed to it before. Im sure many of the clinics here can arrange it for you. As I said in my above post, if you have no immunity then take the preventative measures of wearing gloves to clean up litter and work in the garden.

I said that you may not see the effect now, but in the future. May not see means, there could be something and there might be nothing. I know a family friend who were unable to get pregnant and the reason was the cats. Her fallopian tubes were blocked and can't release eggs because of something in the cats fur. My sister got problems in The Respiratory System and she did not get any better until we get rid of all the cats that we were keeping in the house. Scorpio, it is not the different way of thinking in this part of the world. I used to have different kinds of animals and i don't think that you got as much as i got. I'm not trying to make a comparison here, but I used to have: Cats, Parrots, Pigeons and Rabbits. I don't have this look to the animals as well as all of those creatures are god's creation and he creates them for a reason.

I know where you coming from Butterfly. I guess we all have to do what makes us feel safe.

I'm kinda unconventional and adore my darling little cats to death, and won't change my relationship with them now that I have a baby. I guess I'm not the type of mother who gets frantic and anal over these things, (honestly those woman drive me mad....hehehe). I'm probably the odd one out but that's me. My baby has been fine around my cats, and everyone is happy :)

it's not a matter of allergy ONLY. It's more like safety. Both animals and babies can be very unpredictable at times. Babies curiosity may drive them to go like ..."what would happen if I pull the cat's tale" and the cat may get aggresive towards the baby. I don't know, it's just common sense...

Having said that, I feel totally comfortable to allow my daughter to play with my dog or cat, but only if I am supervising. And that was only after my daughter was six months old. I would never let an animal near a newborn. But maybe that's just me.

My parents had two cats and a dog when I was a baby and I don't even have an allergy.

What health hazards are you talking about? I know hundreds and hundreds of people back home with older kids who have had pets around their children since they were babies, and they have never been sick. I was bought up with cats and dogs around me and have never been ill.

I've never heard anything so crazy...

I guess it's different thinking in this part of the world, a lot of people see animals as dirty mongrels.

Letting the cats sleep with your baby does not mean that you should see the side effects right now. I don't mean to say anything, but they might have any of the future and you don't want to blame yourself for that later. God bless your children and keep any hazards away from them.

Hi Honey

I have had animals my whole 30 something years of life, including cats. And over the last ten years I have worked on and off as a amatuer vet nurse, I currently have 7 indoor cats, look after about 20 outdoor cats and in terms of my indoor cats I clean their litter trays a number of times a day. Hence in reality I have had contact with and picked up after hundreds of cats since I was a child.

When I got pregnant a couple of years ago, like you I was worried about Toxoplasmosis as I didn't want to affect the health of my developing baby, but I also had my feline family to worry about as well.

I had some tests done to determine if I had any immunity to toxoplasmosis and guess what? I have absolutely no immunity to it. This means that in my whole life I have never been in contact with a cat carrying it, which means it cannot be as common among the feline population as what people will make you believe.

So whilst it can happen it is not that common, and there are a number of things you can do to ensure that your baby will be safe from the effects of it.

Get a blood test done for yourself and your cat to see if you have immunity to it, and/or if your cat is a carrier of it.

If your cat is found to be a carrier then ensure that you wear disposable gloves and mask when you clean out its litter tray, and wash your hands with disinfectant after playing with him/her. Also replace your kitty litter daily.

Also when gardening wear gloves and dont touch soil with your bare hands.

If the vets here cannot test your cat for it, then follow the above precautions and you shouldn't have a problem. From memory it is caught from being in contact with cat faeces.

Try the following link for more information

Congratulations and I wish you all the best with your pregnancy

Why do you need to keep cats away from babies?

Both my cats are constantly around my baby and even sleep on the bed with us. We have never had any health issues. You just need to use common sense!!

Toxoplasma is a parasite that is shedded with the cat's feces. Many women are allready immune to it, because you can come in contact with it if you had cats before, or even while gardening or eating vegetables that were contaminated(wind disseminates it from feces to surrounding vegetation).

If you have antibodies then no problem there is no risk for you to get it again. If you don't then you have to be careful, have a coproscopic exam done on your cat, and avoid contact with anything that could be soiled.

I did read it now..impressif! i'll careful but also not too worry anymore! those information are very clear..

I don't want to scare you, but i want to be honest and tell what i have in mind. What i know that the cats fur got some bad contents and it is really harmful for women and people with health problems related to the 'Respiratory System'. some women can't even get pregnant because of the cats fur.

I don't want to talk more than that, but you can check this website:

I Wish you all the best from my heart, let all the results be fine and let god be with you.

You are at risk from Toxoplasmosis only when in contact with cat faeces. If using a litter tray, ask someone else to change it/clean it. If the cats are outdoors, be careful of flower beds, etc if you are gardening and be sure to wash your hands after handling the cats. Other than that, there is no reason to worry. My sister has two housecats and has just given birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl!

you have already developed the antibodies from being in contact with cats. When you suffer from Toxoplamosis you feel very mild symtoms that are easily mistaken for a reagular cold, and whilst there is no danger, it is extremely dangerous whilst pregnant.

Best to check with your doctor. IF you already had the disease then you have developed the antibodies, which means that you will not get it again so you can keep your cat. THis can be seen in a blood test.

However, once your baby arrives, best to keep your cat away from your baby.

By sylwiastep• 1 Apr 2007 14:31

And I think it's the cat's poops that are dangerous, so perhaps as long as you don't touch the poops you are ok?

But of course it's best to ask your doctor. He/she should know best :)

There is quite a lot of info on the net if you google

"cats and pregnancy" such as the following,

http://cats.about.com/cs/catmanagement101/a/humanpregnancy.htm

In any case you don't have to get rid of the cat if you take precautions.

My wife always had a cat before we got married. When she got pregnant she took a blood test and while the antibodies were identified her doctor told her she'd developed an immunity and there was no need to worry.

See a doctor, take the blood test and get her/his opinion.

Good luck.

that after the pregnancy, the indoor cats are now outdoor cats...though the patio area is enclosed, the yard is fenced and the cats spend all their time sleeping or sunning themselves, which is what they did when they were indoors.

A friend of mine has three cats - she had no problems throughout her pregrancy. This was in the U.S.

congratulations on trying the family way.

i dont know much about pets but since you have brought up this issue of pregnancy and co-existance with cats...then you probably know of cat issues while being pregnant or having the baby.

well....you gotto decide, if the cat is more important or your baby.

i am sure others will help you out here who have their own pets.....but i think most pregnancy books touch on this issue of having pets while pregnant or with a baby.

all the best dear.

happy heart
