Life After Retirement
Most expats who come to work in Qatar carry with them hopes that they will be able to save handsome amount of money every month so that they will all be able to have a comfortable life after retirement.
Different people, of course, will have different opinions when it comes to life after retirement, and how much money is considered "sufficient" to SURVIVE after we all stop earning $ one day.
These are the usual questions asked :
1. Where do you plan to retire ? In Qatar ? In your country/ country of birth ? Elsewhere ?
2. How much money do you need to have upon retirement so that you can sustain the same style of living after retirement ?
3. To achieve that set amount of Retirement Fund, assuming you continue working in Qatar until retirement, how much QAR do you need to set aside every month for savings ?
What do you think ?

when i was 17 yrs old ( the day i joined medical college) i decided to retire on my 40th birthday...and travel far and wide.. China, Argentina, Australia...
i shud say life has been pretty good so far... i wish to retire when im 40 and live in my farm house in India in the midst of lots of flowering plants and lush green surroundings and listening to vedic chants and maybe swimming and playing tennis...

Having spent over 20 years in the Gulf, we retired to Turkey as the UK had changed so much when we were away.
Very good cost of living and great having six Saturdays and a Sunday
A comprehensive study was done in my country recently on life after retirement in Malaysia.
The study has made the following conclusion :
1. For a person aged 35 today and will retire at the age of 60, he will need RM 2.8 million (about QAR 3 million) in order to have a comfortable living till age of 75. A comfortable living is defined as having a comfortable house, a car, quality food, and access to good healthcare system.
2. The figure RM 2.8 million has already taken into account inflation rate, time value of money and true purchasing power in the year 2032.
3. The figure stated is for one person's expenditure.
If think about our unemployed spouse, dependent children, the number looks scary......
We could start a website called www.trailerliving.com. :)
I will also probably end up as trailer trash eating dog food as well despite my hope of retiring in comfort in Switzerland, Italy or Spain. Maybe the best kind of life after retirement is death.
We had better live as we think, otherwise we shall end up by thinking as we lived. - Paul Bourget
Nah, we'll just be common law, that way we don't have to pay extra taxes.
Is it an itinerant one Gypsy? Do I need to marry you too?
You can always join me in the trailer oooo. :)
I would really like to retire tomorrow with enough money to travel carefree around the world for the rest of my life. Of course I would have a base in my home country (where else?) to rest in between trips. Probably I should start playing the lottery ...
LOL Charmed. No worries, they aren't that tasty.
of course you could come and live on our farm, as long as you promise not to eat the dogs!!!!
Make sure you don't have to stay with the pigs, Gipsy!
My dream is to retire in my homecountry, which is Germany. Therefore you would need 25000Euro a year to have a very good life, assuming to be married and my partner receives nearly equal payments as well. For 25000 Euros a year I would need approx 1000000 invested on interest of 2.5%, which is reasonable. I think this is an achievable goal, though i still got 35 years left to go for it! ;)
Retiring in Qatar? no way! Don't get me wrong, I like being here and I really enjoy it, but without a job and only freetime being to old for some activities...I would even go for the trailerpark as Gipsy stated with the dogfood...could be an alternative plan. Is there a trailer park in Qatar?
LOL Charmed, both of you can marry me in Canada! But I get to live on your farm with you. :D
to canada, in NB and live in the middle of nowhere, with a whole pack of dogs, a pet pig, cow, chickens and a goat - serious! I cant imagine anything nicer. how much will we need i have no idea? I plan to have a vegetable garden, and chickens to lay eggs. material things dont interest me much, by then i will hopefully have thousands of books to entertain myself with, and hubby can finally finish making the model airiplanes which he buys!
But canada wont let us in yet sadly - hmmmmm gypsy are you married? can we marry you so we can get in? Or you could be my long lost sister!! Lol!!
oh well i dunno where we will end up somewhere nice i hope!
Do you mean where do I Ideally plan to retire or where I will end up?
Ideally I would like to retire somewhere like Italy or France, I will probably end up back in Canada living in a trailer in Winnipeg.
How much do I need to save to do this, oh probably over a million, how much will I save, probably under a $100,000.
No clue how much I need to save, which is why I will end up in a trailer eating dog food. Oh well C'est le vie.
