What NOT to Wear????!?!

brightstar
By brightstar

I've been living in Qatar now for about 2 weeks and i'm a teenager. back home i was able to wear whatever i wanted but now that i'm living in Qatar i have to think twice.

not to be rude or offensive or anything but does anyone notice how people stare so much here???

i was just wondering what is considered like, wrong to wear here. I understand the Qatari culture and how women here dress in black, but does that mean that i have to 'cover up' just to not disrespect their culture??

Each country has different culture and beliefs. I'm also from the country where freedom is everywhere. Respect their culture and beliefs and wear something appropriate. Save some for imagination especially if you're walking outside. I'm not saying you need to wear hijab, just wear normal clothes where legs and arms are covered and not flaunting some sensitive parts. Walk straight and never turn your head even if someone is calling u.

there is no strict dress code in Qatar as some would like you to believe.

People just don't wear revealing clothes like low cut tops that show half your cleavace or skin tight lycra pants.

There are some people that like to stare.

These people are A$sholes.

They really annoy me! Some of these guys stare and I wonder, why is it that most of my friends don't do that.

I have some Saudi friends that have lived in the UK for ages and they STILL stare at a woman passing by.

I think it's rude.

Then again, I'm an average Qatari, not one of those desperate guys :P

People like to stare at each other. I always wonder what they're thinking but now I don't even bother. It's normal.

on a side note: I think MORE people need to wear more revealing clothes :P That way, it becomes the norm and people stop staring lol

@Pepe, I'm Qatari and I wear shorts. (sometimes not all the times lol)

edit: I'll wear low cleavage for you Red_pope

A dress code is a CODE.

What people decide to wear is up to them.

In England we don't have a dress code, but if you walked around naked you'd be screwed.

Anyway, sorry if you wanted me to tell the world what you wanted me to say.

Don't kill the fun for the rest of the group!

Is nice to have some kind of entertainment and deep admiration.

There is nothing to look at in Qatar except monoliths of old age traditions.

Why are you telling her there is no dress code, but still you are suggest proper Dress Code? I don't get it?

I guess is your protocol.

I have found the women stare much more than the men! Quite blatantly at times, I find this more disconserting, or is it that I have just got used to men staring? Does anyone else find the same?

We are a western family - my wife and young children are all blond with blue eyes. So to minimise attention, we have a 'no knees' policy when out, more so at the souq than at say Villagio. Tshirt & 3/4 pants seems to work for everyone.

I think the advice given above is pretty sound, just don't dress for the gym or a nightclub if you're not in one.

By anonymous• 21 Aug 2007 09:15

I do wear shorts all the time, anywhere...even down in the souqs or other traditional areas.

In terms of modesty, some young Phillipino ladies frequently wear rather revealing OR tight clothing (even at night or in traditional areas like souqs). Do they forget where they are? Are they being culturally insensitive? OR Are they deliberately trying to attract attention?

Its really a matter of personal choice - I have lived in Qatar for 8 years and people are more relaxed about their choice in clothes than when I first arrived.

I guess by short pants you mean a pair of shorts - As long as they are not too short I cant see a problem.

Really its women that seem to feel more uncomfortable in what to wear here.

I personally have never had a problem wearing any of the clothes I have chosen to wear. Some women here chose to lose their own identity.......

I am not a female, I am a male. I'm just wondering if there's any truth to what other people say that men in Qatar should not wear a pair of short pants. Is that true? I'll be soon living there and I'd like to know. I am a very casual person and I usually wear short pants. Please enlighten me on this. Thanks! :)

I also feel uncomfortable at being stared at, so I know it must be disconcerting for you.

I went out and bought an Abhaya which I wear if I know I am going to be anywhere around a large number of men, just for my peace of mind.

In western countries, women can wear what they like. It is often brought up that women dressing revealingly can be the reason that they are raped. But I feel its your prerogative to wear what you want and still feel safe.

However in a country like Qatar, unfortunately, wearing clothes that reveal to much, definately invites unwanted attention, and possible danger with it. So for your own safety, wear jeans and t-shirts as far as possible out in public. But feel free to wear whatever you like when hanging with friends or at home.

It depends how self-conscious you feel. Unfortunately many men here will stare no matter what you wear.

My wife dresses fashionably. Just because some men will look doesn't mean she shouldn't buy and wear clothes she likes.

She likes jeans, skirts, t-shirts, blouses, boots, sandals and she wears them all, but not together.

Also, dress according to your surroundings.

If the men stare they're the ones who have the problem and lack the social and cultural maturity, not you.

I believe the unofficial dress code is not to wear anything too form-fitting and for females to cover your shoulders and knees. However as a youg female you will probably get stared at. There are many people living in Qatar who do not consider staring rude!!!

With regards to Islam (Qatar is an Islamic country) men are supposed to avert their eyes for a woman and vice versa or at least not stare at them. If you visit a Qatari home you will most certainly see this in practise - in fact you will most probably not come into contact with any males in the house at all as a mark of respect to you as a woman visiting their house.

It's actually very good of you to bring up this subject.....most teenagers wouldn't bother. I just suggest you dress modestly. There is no need for you to 'cover' up; however if you don't want them to stare, just avoid wearing 'revealing' clothes. So jeans and a t-shirt are fine for example. Belly buttons out and tank tops (where half of your undergarments can be seen) or 'see through' stuff are no no's. No hot pants, or short skirts too.

Just a suggestion. :)
