Salary Expectation - Kindly advice
I am currently in conversation with a prospective employer in Qatar for the position of Head IT. I would appreciate if you could help me assess or further understand the current pay scales across Doha for similar profiles (IT Head / CTO / CIO etc)
The prospective employer is a public listed company and the said profile (Head IT) is supposed to be strategic in nature.
I am based out of Mumbai, India working for a software consulting company in the capacity of Head - Operations having 12 years of experience across Software, Systems, Strategy and Consulting.
I know nothing about Qatar and hence your advice will be crucial in helping me negotiating the offer once made.
Thanks and kind regards,

Great Grand Uncle Dweller your advice is always sincere and appreciated by most of us. We are lucky to have you at QL.
Advice should be given if you know the subject. You have on previous threads indicated that individuals should not be happy with what they have been offered......on what basis? You gave the impression that you knew what you were talking about which could mislead people into making an incorrect decision that would affect not only them but their family too.
You may have been in Qatar for 20 years but does that make you an expert on Qatar salaries?
Rather than me having to monitor your comments would it not be better if the comments were not made unless you know the topic?
Serendipity put it very well in her earlier comment.
As I'm an Indian.. uncle Dweller and serendipity.. what makes you say so that whatever I mentioned was wrong, and I wanted to misguide the person.. c this is a forum, if you understand a forum, ppl share their views, your views might not be pleasing to me or say I wont accept it.. same goes for you. so according to me what i felt, where i felt I wrote..Firstly, there are thousands of posts askin for advice.. I nvr went back and posted every where. Did I?
Secondly forum's are for advices.. not meant to be followed.. All right Serendipity will you follow all that Dweller writes to you.. NO right!! so thats it... these posts help ppl make a decision.. if you feel that my advice is not apprpriate.. tell the person..who has asked and indicate me by saying.. I think this.. is better.. Accepted.. not by simply throwing shit... all along.. All right.. thanx for this.. next time I'll keep in mind and try to weigh my words next time when ever I write anything once again..
Altough..whatever i mentioned.. i still beilieve is true to my knowledge... dont want anyone to be misguided.
Regards
You can always try and negotiate a better deal. However, the benefits are likely to be "written in stone". There may be room for a little manouvering on salary, but not much. If they offer a higher salary to you than someone already in the organisation and on the same grade, they are certain to upset someone.
Good luck.
there is nothing so rigid in employment that you are unable to negotiate, its all in the communication skills.
having said that, most companies have their grades and range of salaries within the gradesthat they offer for their positions.
when you are being offered the position, thats when you are given the time to think about the position pay etc.the benefits are usually a fixed package that comes along with the company, it varies slightly with grade changes.
so if you havent signed the dotted line yet and you wish to rediscuss the pay package, you shouldnt have a problem. but ofcourse you have to use your prudence in deciding if the new figure is feasible to put in front of them or you are trying your luck to bite off a huge chunk. you know you position, your experience and what any candidate in your position would deserve anywhere else.
whatever you do, you have to convince them why you deserve a better package and why they shouldnt look for someone else who would probably be ready to come for the package being offered to you.its a tricky situation.........but what the worst that can happen, they will say "no, the current offer stays" and then the ball is in your court to take it up or leave it.
I wish you get what you aim for, all the best.

Dweller, Imz and Serendipity
Many thanks for all your thoughfulness. I don't mean to create such a stir with my questions. Perhaps I have been unclear with my questions.
The offer actually includes free accomodation in Doha and if from Rasgas for an engineering position.
Is it true that you can't negotiate your pay package and have to accept it as it is? If not how hard can I negotiate ? Any further advise?
Jojo
I'm doing fine thanks......you?
They sometimes call me amja over here, same thing.
hi uncle dweller :-D....sorry.......couldnt resist it.
how you doing buddy? you know, what you and serendipity say is so true. the last thing we need on our conscience is that we advised someone wrong and brought them more grief than a better life, although I am sure none of us would ever do that intentionally.
may our almighty guide us right and help us guide those, seeking information, the right path too.
take care dweller.

DRIVE SAFE,someone is waiting for you at home
Thanks for that Serendipity. One of my main concerns was that on another post there was advice to negotiate a much higher salary. Something that could have led to the job offer being withdrawn.
I don't take offence easily but if imz is Indian, I will take the "Uncle" as a reference to an elderly person which is true
IMZ, if I am able to offer assistance I will, but based on accurate information.
That's actually quite rude and disrespectful of you Imz with your reference to "verbal vomit".
Dweller is simply concerned that people should get the most accurate information so that they have the facts on which to make a life changing decision of moving to a different country. Don't forget, some people aren't just moving from another country in the Middle East, some people are moving half way across the world, away from their friends and families, some of them can expect to encounter major culture shock and a completely different way of life.
Bearing in mind those major changes in lifestyle and leaving behind friends and family and so on, people will understandably want to ensure that they receive adequate compensation for their sacrifices.
Also, not knowing about the cost of living, not knowing about salary levels, they are like the blind being guided by the sighted people of Qatar Living, who see the prices on the petrol pumps on their grocery receipts on their pay cheques. They're relying on people here to give them the best *independent* advice about whether it is worth their while to make the move.
Imz, if you tell someone: "yeah, that's a good deal, accept it and move over," you may actually cause a family some very real hardship and problems. If someone accepts your advice and acts upon it you might cause some innocent people a lot of harm.
A lot of people on Qatar Living have expressed concerns about the cost of living and about increasing rents, some people living in Qatar are really feeling the pinch financially.
It's wrong of you to be so blase about giving advice and information when it potentially affects people's lives.
Please remember that sitting at a computer possibly on the other side of the planet is a person who doesn't know Qatar, doesn't know the salary averages, doesn't know the cost of living. Their livelihoods, their future wellbeing is to a certain extent in your hands when you tell people to accept an offer or to turn it down.
And it's one thing to give people average information about the cost of renting an apartment/villa and the cost of living and stuff, but you gave that poster advice to accept a package of 20k without knowing more about the role in that company and the type of company, his previous experience, how many people he would supervise, how big the company's network is, what systems it runs, whether there's a lot of proprietary software or bespoke stuff. How do you know 20k is appropriate for that role, without knowing more about the role? That kind of IT role might attract a salary more like 40k or 60k or you don't know, because you didn't ask any questions, you just pitched in with a random figure. And a figure for an apartment? He's a high level executive with a wife and two children, and you think he's going to rent an apartment and not a villa? If he asked for 20k and got it, his family would be stuck in an apartment instead of a villa, when a villa would be a better environment for raising children, they'd have a garden and maybe access to leisure facilities.
Dweller was pointing out that you responded hastily. I agree.
You responded too hastily without asking for more information. And then you were rude to Dweller whose only fault was to be concerned for other people, people he doesn't even know, he cares about.
Now that you are so old and so experienced you could take the pain of answering the questions asked by these ppl, according to Qatar standards, that would be appreciated, I would end it here.. dont want to fall in a verbal vomit, remember its not much to do with the IT jobs, its more to do with Qatar.
Regards
It's not a taunt. I am bit concerned at some of your comments made about salary levels and grades etc on this and other threads. It isn't a subject that should be commented on lightly. Having been in Qatar from 1982 to 1997 and in the region from 78 to 2006 (all in C&B), I think it may be worth weighing your words more carefully when commenting.
The drilling industry I wouldn't have thought, would give a reasonable insight into such as IT jobs.
Have a good day.
thanx man.. actually been here 20 yrs shall I take that comment as a taunt or a word of appreciation?
You seem very well informed about packages for many industries and job levels.
Your package is pretty OK, but how much you will save depends on your lifestyle. for a 3 bedroom appt it will cost you approx 8000/- so now your take home per month becomes 13000/- that is not enuf... try to negotiaite your housing, coz ur basic seems OK ...or else you decide whether you'd like to live in a small place.. u said housing provided by the co. and then u save on 21k, then go ahead and take the offer, yes food and transport could cover for Qr4000/- a month easily.
Ras Laffan is pretty far off.. from the traffic situation here.. it will easily take you more than 1 and a half hours to reach there and another one and a half to come back.. so its like you spend 3 hrs driving everyday.. thats a bit too much, in daily life.
Think again!
First at rajan mittal
Well Qtel is the only telecom co. so they pay gud nuf.. but you need to consider the offer based on your experience. u've nvr mentioned your salary package and experience. If you really intrested in a healthy working environment qtel certainly is not the place, coz the work is like more relaxed and like a typical govt co. well.. I'm saying this as I work for a drilling co. so my work is like operations... where as Qtel or all other q Companies pay you gud but work environment is not much healthy.. see for your package an then decide.
I have been offered a job at RasGas and was told that I would be in Grade 4. Understand Grade 1 is the highest.
I would like to know the following:
1. What's the pay difference between RasGas, QatarGas and Qatar Petroleumn ?? Seems to be there is quite significant differences in Pay.
2. I have been offer a basic of QAR16000. After the transportation and allowance and bonus, my take home per month is QAR 21000/mth. Is this good or are there room for negotiation ? What's the max salary for a Grade 4 ??
3. Is it true that Rasgas will only pay for standard children education and I will pay the differences ?? As I stay in Doha, I was told I need to find my own school for the kids. I believe different schools will have different tuition fees.
4. I will be living in Doha. How long is the travelling time to Ras Laffan ??
5. Is living cost of QAR4000/month sufficient ??
6. Accomodation is provided. Is the utilities paid by Rasgas as well ??
I am only given a few days to consider on this offer. Would appreciate it if someone can provide insights to my question. Thanks.
Hi
I am new to this website and forum.... I am a telecom professional and looking forward to work in qtel.... I am a bit confused of various thinhs regarding Qtel and Qatar-Doha. About the living standards, housing, day to day activities, work culture in qtel, salary structure, other benefits. I would request you if you could tell me about advantages and disadvantages of working here as I will be takinf my wife with me to doha if got the opportunity.
Thanks for all your replies. Suddenly the black area is becoming grey. I appreciate you take time to reply so elaborately to a strangers query. Thanks once again. God Bless
I must say you guys are really helpful. I am seeing something and thanks to all you guys.
Thanks a ton for your prompt reply. Much appreciated.
make sure they give you a furnished family accomodation that could be a 3 bed flat or a villa.
company pays for school, utilities, transport allowances, medical coverage, annual tickets for full family to home town.
now for trivials.
i will assume you live a good life in mumbai and the kids are used to good stuff too.
eating out on weekends: 50-100 per meal.(my weekends make my hubby's head spin:-D
groceries: 500 approx a week.
car loan: 1500-2500 per month.
tel bills: hmmmmm working for qtel???????
school fees: 200- 570 tuition fees for KG and uptil 700 for class 1 and above. this is high figure. i assume your six year old is going to class 1 or kg 2.(if company doesnt pay)
other miscellaneous expenses: once you enter a mall, you can easily breathe our 500+ per trip. so it depends how tight fisted you are.
keep higher loose figures and calculate.
housing is approx 15000 for a 3 bed villa, semi furnished.
2 bed flat could be around 5000+
3 bed flat around 7000+
hope this helps.
most important.....Doha is nothing like Mumbai or even clsoe to dubai. doha is fast upcoming country with a little long way to go, but its a lovley place to live in.traffic is lousy but you will still have quality time to spend with your kids. work for you will be dont by 3 pm max, and then its family time, you can involve yourself in some or the other hobby.
happy heart

Before you consider what you need to be asking, I think you need to know what it is that you will be spending:
If you are a family and looking for a 3 bedroom place ( apt or villa) then you need to know that you'll be spending at least QR 10,000 to 16,000 per month!
House rent here is a night mare!
Consider paying a monthly installment for a car at around QR 2000 / month
Are you medically covered?
Does your company offer school allowance? (this is very important)
And in a recent study done by Gulf times, it stated that a family of four ( parents and 2 kids) required a salary of QR 29,000!
So my friend do some hard bargaining!
Dont take anything less than that.. coz for a small two bedroom appartment its gonna cost you 7000 and then leaves u with 13k, trust me u cant do much with it...
so be sure.. what u opt for.
