European Road Trip

By Cornellian

Summer vacation is near, and we finally decided on which continent we want...EUROPE. The thing is we have no clue where to go. We've got about 2-3 weeks vacation. So anyone gone on a european road trip ? Any recommendations on hotels, car renting, routes to take, places to see ? Anything at all would be helpful right now. Thanks :-)

I always think of Eastern Europe as the place to go if you've done all of the crowded tourist bits of Europe. Once you've seen the Louvre and the Sistine Chapel, then go and enjoy the beauty that is Eastern Europe. I'm thinking of going next summer now that I'm all western Europed out.

If you can bear to take some advice from an older, urbane, well travelled, Robbie Williams lookalike kinda guy (wish I could see the world through Scarlett's eyes) you will go to Croatia. Italy is amazing but it is very crowded and expensive at this time of year but you will have a great time in Croatia.

It really is a stunningly beautiful place. The Adriatic is crystal clear and if you like beautiful islands, stunning beaches and fabulous fresh seafood, you're gonna love it. Go to Dubrovnik, Split and the islands of Korcula and Hvar.

The only downside is that there are a lot of nudist beaches. Well that's not the downside, the downside is that they are full of Germans. Now the young female German is a glorious sight but unfortunately she is often accompanied by her not so glorious mother and grandmother in all their natural splendor.

That aside, Croatia is fabulous. Go!

California is a bit weird...I prefer any place to visit than there..and Corne...you are gorgeous anywhere you go! Besides, you are YOUNG..they want to stay that way and just because they've had enough plastic surgery to blink through their belly button doesn't mean they aren't real...:)

Let me know when your going so I can tell you the locations where to meet the dumb blonde surfers.

Everyone has mentioned Western Europe, but Eastern Europe is just as beautiful and cheaper. Croatia, Poland, Hungary, Czech, Romania, etc are amazing.

Germany and Austria were lovely. Especially Austria. I'm in Canada now spending quality time with the grandparents so it's nice.

then 3 years ago..just up and went by myself for almost 4 weeks...Flew into Sydney, spent a week there, flew to Alice Springs, rented a small motor home like thing..camped by myself for week and half in the outback...flew to Melbourne and spent a week with my best friend's family. Then last year hubby joined me on a 2 week trip to Darwin for barramundi fishing, and traveling around cause he got tired of hearing me yap about how much fun it was! If you want to go...I'll go with ya!!!

You can go France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain. Italy is by far my favorite, but Austria is a close second.

I'd love to go to Australia, it's on my to-go list, but it would take more than a 2 weeks to see everything. Someday I'll go...someday...someday (maybe if i keep saying that to myself it'll get better...naah who am i kidding)

Well my only vacation is in summer, so I don't have much of a choice though I know Europe would be alot better sometime during spring.

As for the route, I've been sitting here trying to decide. I also think France, Italy and Spain would be the best. I was thinking maybe land in Rome, go to Milan, Marseille, Nice, Barcelona and then Madrid, catch a plane back from there...what do u think ?

Would u recommend a train over a car? The advantage of having a car is that ur on own schedule, u can make stops wherever u want, and u get to explore more.

Summer is not really the right time to visit Europe. Over priced, fully-packed with tourist & most-importantly it’s deserted during August. France, Italy & Spain are the best for road trips. You can either rent a car or use their superb train system. Last June I went to Spain, I started my trip in Madrid, then headed south by train to Seville, and from there I explored most of Andalucía cities like Malaga, Cadiz, & Cordoba.

Prague is beautiful, charming, full of history and character and best of all it's cheap when you get there. Stay in the Old Town, Mala Strana, the hotels are cheaper and it's quieter than the centre. A visit to the Jewish Quater is a must and try and do a river boat trip. Rome is unfortunately V EXPENSIVE, but worth every penny - cheap hotels in Monterotondo, about 20 mins by train out of the city and public transport is very good and cheap too. Have fun :)

It is the place I liked the most around Europe...I know it's a matter of taste, but still it's something u must not miss...tough it's a ltl bit warm during the summer...but the Greeks really know how to make u feel good...
