in canada you can get a history of the car from the government, and many people will take it to a mechanic that will look everything over and give you an assessment.

There are many mechanics on the Salwa road who do engine, tyre, axle, body, chassis and other finer checks that will give you a good idea about the car's state. I belive they charge around Qrs. 200 or something. Highly recommended if you are buying it directly for the seller
If you are not buying the car from certified used cars showroom such as Advantage or Oasis, then I think they do give guarantee for a year or two. You could also ask them for the car's maintenance/service history.

i'm looking at cars 1-2 years old, so would the warranty be transferrable? i'm assuming yes but you never know.
