The Swiss National Day (German: Nationalfeiertag; French: Fête nationale Suisse; Italian: Festa nazionale Svizzera; Romanish: Fiasta naziunala Svizra) is 1 August. It is inspired by the mention of "early August" (primo incipiente mense Augusto) in the Federal Charter of 1291. It was first celebrated in Berne in 1891, marking the 600th anniversary of the charter. It displaced the formerly more prominent traditional date of the Rütlischwur, 8 November 1307, in the latter 20th century and was made an official national holiday in 1994. It is celebrated each year on August 1st with town-wide paper lantern parades, bonfires, hanging strings of swiss flags and fireworks.

Town-specific celebrations

The day of independence is typically celebrated at a local, municipality level though certain events draw nation-wide attention. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen has illuminated its 25 meter high waterfalls for special events. Beginning in 1920, the waterfall has been regularly lit for the national holiday and since 1966 is now lit only for this holiday. At the historic location of Rütli Meadow above Lake Lucerne, a representational celebration is staged in the location where the legendary pledge of alliance, the Rütlischwur is held to have taken place.

i don't have negative impressions about switzerland.

i was born in canada. i love canada. i think life in canada is too focussed on work. that doesn't mean i have a bad impression of canada, it simply means i can be honest with myself and others.

swiss society is very rigid. it most certainly does not mean that i think badly of the place. i was considering moving there not too long ago (but ended up in Qatar). i would still consider it today.

perhaps i should have used rigid instead of anal in my original thread. either way, i think there is too much political correctness creeping its way into this thread.

have a good day miss swiss.

most of my family is swiss and i am half swiss, so for me it's not "them", it's "us".

i am not degrading them. i love switzerland and have been there many times. i have also worked for one of the largest most respected swill companies.

have you even been there?

are you aware that if you live in an apartment in switzerland or are staying in a hotel you are not allowed to flush the toilet or take a shower after 10pm? if you do you will get a knock on your door. are you aware if you take your garbage to the street too early the night before collection, you will have people complaining?

no offence mate, but swiss society is anal. each culture has good and bad qualities. each of them. discussing those qualities is not degrading the swiss - i never said 'i hate swiss people because of...', or 'swiss people suck because of...', i simply pointed out something about their society which i believe to be true.

Maybe your mother had good reasons to leave Swiss but it is sad if you have those negative impressions about her homeland.

Bad response about Swiss culture.. If you dont respect them, dont try to degrade them with words like the one you used to describe their culture

i think the 3 kisses is just tradition. the english world uses 1 kiss. in spain it's 2 kisses (i think italy and france too). and in some places it's 3.

maybe it's overcompensation for the anal side of swiss culture.

my mother is swiss. she goes back every year, but she's glad she emigrated to canada because swiss society is far too rigid for her liking.

In modern Western culture, kissing is most commonly an expression of affection. This is unlike many parts of the world where kissing is viewed as a means of respecting others.

Between people of close acquaintance, a kiss, often reciprocal, is offered as a greeting or farewell. This kind of kiss is typically made by brief contact of puckered lips to the skin of the cheek or no contact at all, and merely performed in the air near the cheek with the cheeks touching. Such kissing is a common greeting in European and Latin American countries between a man and a woman or between two women but also by two men in parts of Europe and Latin America, such as Argentina. However, in most Western societies, it is often more acceptable for women to kiss each other than men kissing each other. People sometimes kiss children to comfort them or show affection, and vice versa. This usually takes place on the forehead or cheek.

As an expression of romantic affection or sexual desire, kissing involves two people kissing one another on the lips, usually with much more intensity, and for a considerably longer period of time. In more passionate kissing couples may open their mouths, suck on each other's lips, or move their tongues into each others' mouths (see French kiss). Sexual kissing may also involve one person kissing another on various parts of the body (see Foreplay).

In romantic and sexual kissing, the physical sensations are often of primary importance. One might find it stimulating if their partner moved their tongue in small circles against their own, or bite the lips gently. Caution should be exercised, as others may find the biting of lips distasteful and displeasing, not enjoying it.
