Need help shipping!
By craiger125 •
Alright, so I've accepted an offer to move to Qatar, and I've been given a shipping allowance of 2400 CAD or 8100 QAR. I have several large boxes to move, such as much computer, books, etc, and I'm wondering what the most cost-effective way for me to do so is. I've looked at FedEX and declared the weight as 75 KG, and the cost was staggering. Over 1400USD, not including my wife's effects! Obviously this isn't a good choice, so I'm wondering about a freight shipping company, or something else that I may not be aware of
Any help is appreciated!
You don't have that much weight. Perhaps contact the airline, ours was KLM, directly and find out how to ship this via their cargo department.
We just moved back to Canada from Qatar and the company was Allied International. They have agents in various cities. I would recommend them.
It is easy to get the freight organised, all you have to do is call up the company they will come and look at what you have and give you a proposal they will tell you how much it will cost when they see what you have. If you don't need your things urgently ship transport is definately cheaper but takes longer.
It is advisable to get your belonging insured for the transport and anything electrical make sure it is well packed.
The transport may not damage your goods but sure as anything the customs will and they are not careful how they good through the boxes.
Just bringing a few things from Dubai cost me a great deal of stress due to the way the goods were handled in the customs. Although all my things were professionally packed many things were destroyed by the time I received them.
Good Luck
tell them them the approx volume/weight of your shipment and ask for a quote. If it's not a full or half container load, then it will be shipped in with other partial loads which may mean it will take a circuitous route and take a long time to arrive (min 8 weeks by sea)
You can either air freight it (the cost of 75kg should be a few hundred bucks) or get a container (which will travel by ship). Since you're not bringing too much air freight is a better option.
Call up your international airline (or Qatar Airways office) and find out who are the air freight agents. They will be able to give you better costing - it is usually pretty easy.
