Favourite supermarket in Doha

Which is your favourite supermarket/shopping mall? I love Carrefour and MegaMarkt, and City Center and Villaggio. But somehow from Lulu Hypermarket...it just freaks me out, I don't know why.
What about you?

Family Food Center

megamart hands down!... as far as meats, cheese and hard to find healthy items like quinoa, frozen fruits, cooking oils i think it is the best.

Stuff like fresh fruits and vegetables is good at family food because of the big turn around and reasonable pricing.

LULU is a creepy place, i don't know why but i just cannot stand it.

I guess the meat not that fresh ... now and again the meat section got closed down for a month buy the ministry of health or whatever because they customer complain abt their product.

But yes i use The Centre alot because it is convenient nearby the house. And the cashier smile and greet you nicely ... unlike the Lulu Centre cashier. Prices is expensice compare to other thoo ...

the landmark mall MegaMart is larger and better stocked than the smaller MegaMart at The Centre. The Centre is located on Salwa Road between Dairy Queen and the Jaida Flyover. Ramada signal area. Both locations offer a good selection of hard to find imports and fresh meats and fish. Excellent deli section and a good bakery. one of the few places that locally made flour and corn tortillas can be found in the city. Iams pet food regularly available and a large frozen food department make this a monthly stock up stop for many shoppers.

Kelly - 100% agree with you. lived 1 1/2 years in Bin Sultan Compound behind Safari. My comment was a sacarstic one for some of the members here. they know who they are.

By KellysHeroes• 30 Aug 2007 09:01

Safari is badly organized, very crowded, and the prices are not cheap. Rather more expensive than any other supermarket.

Its only advantage is being close to inductrial area, which I think the management is taking advantage of that through monopolizing the residents of that area who are mainly not mobile and cannot afford to go to carrefour or lulu or ffc.

Family Food Center on al Merghab has been a favorite for many years. LULU has a fine selection of fruits and veg at good prices hence the crowds on the weekends. Carrefour has the ease of shopping as they have good values on clothing and household items. MegaMart whilst expensive have those comfort foods and import items. the small Food Center at Al Messila has an exceptional butcher and will cut to order with some notice given. Shoprite has some surprising items that are at times unavailable at larger establishments. Dasman's has good prices on basics and good selection of housewares. Giant has great produce especially at the Hyatt Plaza location. with so many to choose from finding ingredients can be a treasure hunt. patience as with all things.. local markets and co-op shops are most convenient despite the challenges in selection and variety. new find !!!! the wooqod petrol stations have Bateel breads.. whoo hoo

I tend to buy the 'local' equivalent. Just as good and usually far cheaper.

I would say that Giant it my favorite in Hyatt. They tend to have more imported things. And if they don't have it Carrefour is always right next door! :)

Even though I live in the Gharrafa/Duhail area, I love driving with my daughter over to LuLu Hypermarket. They've got the best veg/fruit (even the apples are good) and the bread is out of this world!!! My wife doesn't like it since it doesn't have any East Asian food she likes (it only has Central Asian food (Indian subcontient items)).

Dasman is good , its the nearest to my house in gharrafa but most of the time u cant find meat fish or poultry, its just for quick shopping and ordinary items with price better than mega mart.. i definetly prefer giant stores at hyatt plaza, fruit and vegetable section is excellent and already packed poultry and meat makes shopping easy and quick.About mega mart i just realized last time i arrived home that i bought some twix and mars for 5.5qr each!!! its original made in UK, so if u dont care where is it made, just like me , be careful when buying there..

By jauntie• 24 Aug 2007 09:26

Went there for the first time the other day and my husband walked me up and down EVERY aisle to see what they sold and commit it to memory for when I need some particular item when shopping by myself lol!

I liked the grocery and greengrocery part very much.

The grocery shelves were stocked with goods to suit the tastes of just about ANY nationality. There also had loads of interesting spices and dried beans etc in reasonable size packs and the vegetables and salads really DID look very fresh with lots of variety.

I would certainly shop there if I had in mind to make a specialty meal because I'm sure I'd find everything I wanted under the one roof.

I can't say it's my favourite store because I don't really HAVE a favourite - just like to know who sells what and where to go to get particular items I may need for cooking.

For tea - Megamart. But it doesn't mean that you will find you favorite tea in there. :)

Kivifruits, er... Check them all. :) (Carrefour in city-center better than in Villagio. Fruit-wise, I mean)

shop rite is good for some things in old airport area, its small and quiet thats why i like it, maybe a little more expendsive, but i will get my shopping done much faster, plus the staff are friendly, unlike Lulu you will be lucky if u get a smile out of most of the staff there

when it comes to pure economics nothing beats lulu.no prudish snob salesmen as in carrefour.no hassle if you want to exchange your stuff

and no prices to make your eyes bulge out of their sockets.but its crowded and not enough space.

City Centre & Lulu Hyper.

Carrefour, Al Meera, Food Palace.

Carrefour,CityCentre seem shortstaffed. Some sections do not seem to have any sales-person. And if they have any, there is only one (so if he goes to get some stuff or to the loo you have to PAUSE your shopping & wait for him).

I love the TV section at Carrefore where the sales persons watch TV & keep chatting amongthemselves without any attention to the Customers. When they are bored with the same songs they put in other DVD songs to watch.

Its like you have to ask them "Sir, I hope you are not too busy cause I want to ask you a question?" .

By Diana• 20 Aug 2007 09:35
Diana

Do not have one, they all suxx. :)

So I have to go to MegaMart/Carrefour/FFC for different products. Put them in one building, please! :)

I like Family Food Centre (FFC) since i can find almost every vegetables there, except small red chili and galanga which make me have to go to Mega Mart or Carefour to get that two items. The price also good at FFC, compared to other.

Mega Mart is the best I think, for variety and choice. It is the most expensive which is a little annoying. Still have to do some shopping around to get exactly the things I want. Can't stand Carrefour - fresh food is not that good.
