I'm from Hong Kong and I'm a chinese. What make you feel that it's difficult for chinese to cope with the living standard & culture there? Could you give us a couple of examples from your experiences?
Besides Qatar, have you worked or lived in other countries? How do you compare Qatar with those countries?
I am from Hong Kong as well. If you are a Chinese, I strongly suggest you not to come to Doha. The living standard and the culture cannot be acceptable by Chinese.
In addition, there are still a lot competitive power in Hong Kong, especially it is facing to China, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and is the main financial and service centre in worldwide. But if you are looking for Qatar.... there is nothing... if you see from the flight to Doha, you will find this is a hell.... no landscaping.. all cars... people are not really in the street (as too hot)...
Also, the arabic culture is not suitable for all Chinese as well.
Placing me as an example for you, I will stay in Hong Kong (in fact, I am planning to go back to Hong Kong after my contract as well).
Please keep in mind, nothing is better than home town.
.............Only because there is a 'Qatarisation program' and percetage targets need to be met, even at the expense of 'unsuitable' candidates gaining higher positions.
However, if you are required in Qatar for your expertise, and you obviously are, then you should be OK and can take it that you will not be replaced any time soon. As a rule of thumb, it takes threee years to train somebody here to do your job .......... regardless of what opinions you have regarding experience/qualifications.
IN other words ... you 'should' be OK here at least for 3 yrs :D
It is because nothing else to do ... i am stuck in the house with my son. Too hot to go outside. So i jst posting on QL, MSN-ing, Yahoo-ing, e-mail etc etc.
I have received your PM, will e-mail your wife later.
maybe you could send my mrs a PM? She is Indonesian and also worried about what our life maybe like out there..I have a vision of ...finish work, go home all sit around the telly, and without a social scene, what does everyone do?
Thanks Novita77 I will do that - difficult to explain, but I met my wife in a nightclub, so we are both night creatures and lil Henry is so active I'm worried that quite a lot of people say Doha is too boring for us. I have travelled a bit and I am sure anyone would be pushed to complain about HK. The pollution , however, is a concern here...its not too bad right now as the wind is blowing it all back to China, but on a bad day you cant even see across the harbour....btw waht os "PM" them?
you are party animal hmm well which one the one who drinks alot or the one who teases around alot or the one who takes the dance floor or the one who gets to be a Dj hmmm well Join me in sport events thats all i have for you.
daiwai ... there is a member on this forum call 'newintown' she is from HK and her hubby from scotland. I think her hubby have live in HK for many yeears before they both decided to move here. I have met them both ... why dont you PM them and ask about her opinion about HK vs Doha?
I only been to HK as a tourist, never actually living there ... so dont think i can help you much.
its very tough to beat HK - safe, clean, modern, liberal - all th things that Qatar is too I expect, but HK also has an edge and that ,makes it exciting. beautiful scenery too - mountains, trees, lakes and waterfalls...this will be a BIG decison for me....anypne out there regret going?
thanks for the prompt reply - as its the Government i think it will be ok on the contract side although I have'nt seen that yet. However, I've read on these forums that the social scene can be very tame......ie no pub scene, dress code is tame, what does everyone do in the evenings?
Make sure whoever hire you they should/must cover housing (not giving you an allowance) in full, schooling, medical and flight to go home at least once a year.

Hello daiwai! Just to let you know that public transportation in Doha is not as efficent as HK. So, you should plan to buy a car here. Goodluck!
I'm moving to Doha in October...
Novita 77 is a very nice person. She tend to know a lot about Doha and I got some advices from her too.
agree - guess it would be Gov first then major Govt owned industries.
Hi novita,
Regarding Qatarization, do they have any targets, e.g. which industries are they particularly keen to 'Qatarized', e.g. govt, petro, etc.?

is this a real threat?
Qatar is tax free country, but do check with your country of origin about your country tax policy.
and that's the problem with living in a place where peeps come for their holidays!
btw, whats the tax situation?
go to go swimming.....btw, I presume that swimming costumes for ladies are allowed?
well maybe you can hook up with Keke and Henry...and discuss Surabaya etc
