Advice needed on schooling

My husband has been offered a job in Qatar and I am getting the impression from checking out websites that schooling is 1. very academically focused and 2. it can be difficult to get places. We have a 13 year old who would start his GCSE's here in UK next September, although very able his interests lie more in mechanics and sport. Are there any schools that would better suit him than others? We also have a 16 year old daughter who will be moving with us, any advice about helping them settle would be appreciated!
