I have tried the route via Rayyan & Salwa, I loved the Salwa one. That is - SALWA ROAD --> UMM BAB CEMENT PLANT --> DUKHAN
man the way to Umm Bab resembles places in Mars (now dont ask me if I have been to mars) :p
CAVE
There is another tourist spot on the way. Many guys in Qatar don't know abt this place.
From salwa road take a right turn when you reach near the US air base. Once u reach a School (bitumin road ends) take a left and travel some 5 kms. There you wud see some bushes, trees & water, cross it and take right and travel another 30 mins. Once u climb the small hilly area u 'll be able see a small goat farm with steel fencing. Get down there and walk towards right and u'll see something AMAZING!! It is a BIG CAVE (min 50 mtrs deep)!!!
I went there 5 years back. Me & my friends did manage to go inside, eventhough it was dangerous.
Rememeber - One require a 4 X 4 for sure! Don't lose the direction pls. Incase u don't know abt your posistion watch out for the big communication tower (belongs to either Q-tel or US base) which is situated near the main road.
Oh yeah, I forgot that Arab movie set's supposed to be there. That'd be kinda cool to go see.
As far as how to get there... well, you go past Education City and keep the car pointing west. By that time, the roundabout signs advertise Dukhan. You can also go through Rayyan. Really, when you get to the west of Doha, you start seeing signs.
Or give a landmark, and we can point you in the right direction.
Education City is one.
Or the tilted roundabout is another, which would bring you to Khalifa to go past Education City.
I turn right off the main Doha-Dukhan road a few km before the flyover with the Zakreet sign. Then I drive along the dirt road for awhile and pass through some formations. When I camped there, I drove along the coast (in my case, the coast facing the Qatar mainland). I kept driving until I reached a secluded area with hills/formations to the back. This dirt road doesn't pass the ostrich farm or fort thing.

I remember driving back from Dukhan via Umm Bab in 1982. We drove through 13k of locusts still at the "hopping" stage.
We reported it when we got back and I believe the UN sprayed the area to get rid of the pests.
