All About social life in QATAR

billyJO
By billyJO

I've been reading all this racism etc etc comments on how some of the social life, hotels, weekenders, clubs in town do business with Asian, european's, westerner's bla bla bla...we'll here's one thing y'all have to remember!

all of us are here now on temporary basis and to be some one who some of us are not really that! is sick right NONEE of YOU has the right to descreminate or be racist, thats a fact, when you came here you knew what this place is all about every expats (low salaried or high salaried) are just the same person in town and do you know whats that? its all about surviving the odds of life has to offer. we all left our country to work and save for the worst.

Lets all be real and enjoy the hospitality QATAR people has to offer and think good NOT bad, who the hell do you think you are? i've been here long enough to know whats best for all of us and do you know whats that?

inter-act with each other and get real, Qatar has a lot of goodies to offer to every expats around, look around don't be BAD. remember were all here temporary....try to make this as your experience to be written in your book, and that some day you can read to your grand children what you had contributed to this beautiful place on earth.

if in anyway you are not agreeing with this you better GET the HELL out of QATAR and live as alone. in any case you need not to worry because we will pray for you to be guided accordingly. GOD BLESS YOU...

he must be having a high society life whee he doesnt see what goes around. Or he when he is out in DOha he closes his eyes and moves around which helps hime not to see the discrimination that goes all around.

Yeah I was responding to:

"all of us are here now on temporary basis and to be some one who some of us are not really that! is sick right NONEE of YOU has the right to descreminate or be racist"

I thought he was talking about Qataris cause he goes on about how we should enjoy what Qatar has to offer instead of complain. But then again, he's really confusing so I don't really know what he's talking about.

Beats me, I'm just a lil fishy who was eaten by a cat.

Too many comments, too little time, so here's my opinion on ur thread. I don't remember ANYONE on this forum being racist to Qataris, or are completely against Qatar, afterall we are all here by choice and apparently all of us like enough to stay.

However, because we live here and like this country, we want it to improve, not only for our sake but for the sake of Qataris. It's not wrong to voice our opinion and critisize, as long as it's constructive critizism and it's something that'll help Qatar become a better place. Why should we just accept the bad when there would be room for improvement ?

Who the hell are we ? We are residents of this country, and even though we aren't citizens but to alot of us this has become a second home, so don't talk to us like Qatar isn't our country, because it is.

"I've been reading all this racism comments on how some of the social life, hotels, weekenders, clubs in town do business with Asian, european's, westerner's..."

Are you objecting to those claims about racism in hotels & clubs, or are you supporting those claims & asking to stop the racism?

"Lets all be real and enjoy the hospitality QATAR people has to offer",/b>

But you don't see "QATAR people" at the front desks of hotels & clubs. Usually you have to deal with Asians (India, Fillipenes..etc) or Arabs (Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan...etc)! So are you asking to replace these nationalities with Qataris?

"if in anyway you are not agreeing with this you better GET the HELL out of QATAR"

Again, are you asking people who claim that there is racism in Qatar, to leave the country, or asking those who practice racism in Qatar to leave the country?

I just needed to understand the kind of trouble you are facing!

first of al boo ur right about the older generation qatari'z, first personally i should'nt talk about my views cause im totaly anti-racism but thats cause i grew up in england not here, although i am a qatari i know how most of them feel about racism, like around 90% of the older qatari'z i know talk about white people as bein sluts, indian and fillipino'z as bein cheap work and well somethin bad about evry race exept there own ( p.s sorry about wat im satyin and the way im sayin it ) the more middle aged qatari'z are a little more lenient about it ,but they still follow the views there parents left, know ive noticed there are 2 types of 20+ aged qatari'z approx 55% of them want 2 have fun before they get married which is around the age of 18-26 ya thats wen they get married if a qatari girl is not maried before 26 her parents will make her :| and now the teenagers oddly most of the teenagers (80%) only think about getting married, helping threre parents find a man for them and all those 50'z house wives jargon but the other 20% are pretty normal teenagerz although they just happen to have to do evrything and i mean evrything behiend there parenrts backs even goin out to city center ( just to clarify things 4 u a qatar girl no matter wat age unless she's marrried and in most cases even then cannot go out in public withought a maid accompanying here ) well.. that 20% (but wid da boyz its 60-40) of teenagers are totally anti - racist, usually hang out wid a very internatinal group of friends and is thougt of as very western minded ( drinking , partyin etc ). know for gender mosr qatari boyz are free to do wat they like wen they like wenever they like includin drinkin, dating etc, and the parents preffered not to be told about it, but know the girlz .. wait 4 it are not allowed to go in public withought a maid, talk 2 any males unless they are a store clurk, and wen girlz are out in public and over the age of 16 and are not covered arabic men just think there easy :p like seriously people :p and alot more stuff that boz can od and girlz cant but there'z way to many and im not bothered to write em all... and now if u dnt mind im gonna go get my mornin fix of coffee :p ... if u have any questions dont be afraid to PM me :P

being in a different country doesn't permit one to judge/discriminate someone by color, sex, age or even smell...you are here to learn, understand and even adopt what is around you..it just saddens me, that everyone doesn't think the way i do...and instead accused and be accused of being a racist...

you become one because of the people around you..just one look from other nationality and there you go..thinking something like "why is he looking at me that way?" is it because i'm brown? "generalization" also is an issue here..it doesn't follow that if one bad thing happens to you cause by this nationality then it applies to everyone? (depends on the person)...hmmmm..am i making any sense..just my thought..

Last year before it closed I was thinking about joining the Doha club...so phoned and booked a tour to see it for myself. When they heard my Arabic name they gave a tour, but said that there is a LONG waiting list of at least a year, but when they asked for my wife's name and it is NOT arabic, they asked where we were from and when they found out we were Canadian they said we could join up on the spot...no waiting list.

That never sat well with me....I guess it never mattered, they closed soon after....but the concept is a foreign one for Canadians...we are not allowed to ask such things let alome apply 2 sets of rules and discriminate on that basis. BIG example is pictures on CVs!! Unless you are applying for a modeling position...WHAT'S UP WITH THAT???

For me, (exact same person with the exact same education, qualifications, etc...) I would get a very different salary depending on which of my 2 nationalities I applied for a job with...STRANGE!

But Qatar wants to improve...so lets hope they do...as others said though it takes awhile.

Stay safe all.

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?

Boo...I have to agree with Gypsy on that younger issue..I have seen some of the younger Qataris be racist or at the very least condescending towards some of the Asian expats. Again tho..takes a while to grow up and learn that people are people..but its getting there. You know, its Qataris like you that are helping so much by getting your views out here in the open for everyone to see. So thank you!!!

The cutting in line part, I don't have a problem with that since I've been to countries like Korea, Japan and other asian countries were cutting line is a norm...

An example of my experience, I was at the Medical commission, the individual who maintains the line is picking people who look like a westerner and letting them go ahead of the line.. I know they are westerner because I'm with them.. since I want to stay with my group, I raised my passport.. As soon as he saw my passport, he was apologetic and put me back with my group..

I wouldn't say that Boo, I've met some racist young Qataris, especially in their views of Indians and Filipinos. Unfortunatly racism can't be discarded in a single generation or even two or three. Qatar is moving along the right track, but it still has a ways to go.

Now me, I never judge someone by their race...their sex, age and cultural background on the other hand. :P

About Racism, i was talking about the specific case that we have here in Qatar. You see it mostly in the older generations who are used to the older more reserved Qatar and they tend to resist change and racism is part of that resistance. But racism is obsolete with the younger educated generation.

Oh ok. I don't know, I'm used to peoples attitudes changing towards me when they find out I'm Canadian. In Europe they start being friendly and treating me with respect once they find out I'm not American, in Korea they started treating me as a human being, once they found out I wasn't a Russian Prostitute, In Kenya, Sri Lanka and Veitnam, it was plain curosity as most people had never met a Canadian, they wanted to know everything about my country, In Cuba they just treated us really well, but they were used to us so it wasn't a big deal. :)

I was in Cuba back when Americans weren't allowed in (yeah, I know, mission trip) and we'd go out looking around..well, when new shipments of things came into the stores, there'd be this LOOOONG line just to get in the door. So..we'd stand at the back, waiting like everyone else. As soon as the person in front of you realized you were American..they'd start pushing you to the front...even tho you protested and wanted to wait...they'd physically push you ahead of themselves. all the while, just touching you and saying how glad they were to see you, welcome, welcome...Made me feel extremely odd...for one, getting such preferential treatment and another to be wanted that much in a country by people whom our mutual countries considered enemies..

Here, I haven't experienced the type of treatment you've mentioned..in fact, has been the opposite..people cut in front of you, push you... both expats and locals..doesn't bother me..just learning to deal with it and go on

Good morning Scarlett :)

I do agree with most of what you said, but I think expatriates have to change mentalities also. Being abroad -away from home and family- sometimes make people become selfish ,careless and a bit harsh.

"It's all about money..." most of my friends and aquaintances here keep on saying the same thing. I personally think differently, but I can understand why others care a lot about financial issues. On the other hand, I think people should stop the "temporary" mode they're adopting here. few workers have long-term projects in mind.

Qataris should also make some efforts to mix up with all those nationalities and make them feel like HOME. Otherwise, Qatar will remain a great land, but a land of transit for all those immigrants. Imagine yourself spending a fornight in a hotel room. Would you care if that room is light/clean/confortable/spacious enough ? You may say yes, but you will probably not care how untidy the room would look like after you leave :D

racism begins with lack of respect for others different than you...but that occurs everywhere, not just here. I grew up in a racist background...but learned on my own to accept people for who they are, not WHERE they come from, physically, religiously, or financially.

Building a bridge of communication is a conjoined effort, where both the nationals and the expats have to join in, because the racism that we see here mostly stems from fear of the unknown.

Again...Qatar is growing up...and it will be a slow and painful process. Its like any newly developing country..those growing pains will last a while but will eventually be overcome(I hope!)

Boo...as much as I hate to admit it..most of it ISN'T blown out of proportion. and yes, as a Qatari I'm sure that it does hurt to see your country's shortcomings. I really don't like to hear about my OWN country's issues..but they ARE there...Its what the people decide to do about it that counts..and sometimes its the mindset of the nationals that has to change a bit. I agree that some of the negativities of Qatar have been blown out of proportion and as a Qatari it hurts me when i see it, but lets put ourselves in their shoes, if i was away from my family and loved ones and am in a place where i cant live my usual lifestyle that i had back home i'd be pretty frustrated and i'd be looking for a way to channel it. Most of them do interact with each other and do enjoy the hospitality that Qatar has to offer but still miss the things they had back home. I'm not saying that its all justified but i see where they're coming from.
