Considering a position in Qatar and other questions

Hi Guys (and girls)

Some of you might remember me, I was asking about moving to Qatar a couple of months back. Anyway, negotiation is almost at the end of its road, and I will be heading to Doha, probably the first week of December, for a visit.

So a few questions:-

1) What is the usual business dress code in Doha? Would a normal business suit do? Or just shirt and tie is fine?

2) I will be seeing people in QIC, not sure if anyone would hear of this company, or know anyone in this company? And feedback?

3) If time permits i might start short listing accomodations... But i don't know where is QIC, and I prefer to be able to walk to work, so that missus at home can use the car? would anyone know of any place there to stay? I am hoping to get an apartment... at least 2 bedrooms, and hopefully with facilities.

4) How much does a BMW 325 cost over there brand new? Would i be able to get one easily or a used one that is 1 year old easily? (this question sounds stupid)

5) (This question are for the home-maker ladies) WE have no kids (at the moment) and if my work don't work... what can she do in the day? She can probably go shopping the first week or so... but i am sure she will be sick of the shopping center after that.... So Home Makers with no kids.. what DO YOU DO in your free time?

6) What are the benefits i should be asking for a position there? Housing allowance, medical benefits, spouse allowance, relocation allowance, home leaves? what else.. what is the norm?

Thanks in advance for any answers i may get. Sorry if the stupid questions bother you. But i need them answered....

Henry

PS ... if you plan to have a family in the future ... maybe you should find out from your future employer what benefits you will recieve such as assistant with schooling, medical, and births, airfares etc etc

of course we do...HOWDY!!!

as far as dress codes...I've found that when in doubt, dress UP a notch...and you'll need a jacket simply because the Qataris are masters of air conditioning and even when its 125 degrees F outside, you could hang meat inside...

As far as your wife...let her drive and she will find all sorts of things to do. There's a lot of classes, all different sorts, available. She could get a small job if she likes...not sure how to do that yet but I know its available. Or, she could hang out with us QLers...lol

Hi Charging!

Thanks for youre reply.

Yah.. for the actual details of the position, i guess i will need to be there to talk to them.

I also feel that getting a house is better than allowance... but i am thinking of 2 things:-

1) if they pay me, instead of giving me a place, i get to choose where i want to stay. While it is good if i can get a nice villa, but i don't really need that kind of space.

2) if they pay me cash, i can always get a smaller place than what the money will get me... that way, i am slightly protected from inflation... and at the same time pocket the remainder.

Comments please.

thanks heaps

PS: I found out that the 3 Series starts at QR 119k... so one question answered...

Also, the rents are increasing rapidly, so if you can, it's better to get actual housing from the company instead of housing allowance. In that way, you will have less worries about increasing rents outside (this is applicable if you stay here for long term).

Hi,

I don't know details about every question but let me do for ones I have some idea.

3. I don't think that you or anybody will be able to walk to work, even if your apartment is 200 meters from your office. In the summer which is around 8 months, the temperature is too hot to walk outside. In addition, the distances are usually not that small.

5. The family I know with no kids and stay at home wife, the lady spends most of her time in trying different things, e.g., watching cooking programs and trying every recipe :), decorating the home with different ideas and so many different stuffs, talking to friends on internet, etc.

6. Must ask for transportation allowance. Either one big amount to purchase a car for one time, or a monthly allowance to cover a car to lease. The monthly car lease allowance is the norm here. Even you can purchase your own BMW and give this second leased car to your wife. Or put that monthly allowance in buying your BMW. As you wish.
