Maternity leave, school and caregivers
By Gypsy_2222 •
I have a few questions for working moms in Doha;
1) I am a teacher and I plan on working until I am very pregnant, is that a cultural taboo in the Qatari culture?
2) Is it possible I can get time off my contract, without loosing it altogether, when I give birth?
3) Is it automatic that my husband will be my sponsor? If I have a better offer, because of more schooling, can I be his sponsor?
4) How much does a live-in nanny go for in Doha, I heard they were really cheap?
5) Does school start in September, and what is the schedule of an average school? I heard about 7 - 2, is that right?
Thank you for any input
1. They love kids here and being pregnant and working doesn't seem to be an issue.
2. I imagine this varies per school. Gov't agencies have excellent maternity packages, at least for Qatari women from what I've heard.
3. You will want to be under your husband's sponsorship. That way you can come and go and you are in more control. Only women in certain professions can sponsor their husband. Education may be one of them but I'm not sure. Unlike you, Husband will not be able to come and go (from the country) even if he is on your sponsorship.
4. Do a search on expatwoman.com on the Qatar chatboard. Nannies and wages are discussed all the time. Lots of info.
5. School starts in Sept. and is usually 7-2.
