Eid is an Islamic festival for Muslims all over the world. Muslims have two festivals or two Eids : Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha. Eid ul-Fitr lasts three days and is called "The Lesser Eid" compared with the Eid ul-Adha that lasts four days and is called "The Greater Eid".
Muslims follows a lunar calendar called Hijrah. The Hijrah calendar has 354 days, 11 fewer than the common Gregorian calendar. So Eid will not fall on the same day of the common Gregorian calendar each year.
Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of month of Ramadan. A lot of people confuse Ramadan with Eid ul-Fitr. Ramadan is a holy month of fasting for the Muslims. Eid-ul-Fitr starts the day after Ramadan ends.
Eid al-Adha is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide as a commemoration of Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, under the order of Allah. Eid ul-Adha annually falls on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja of the lunar Islamic calendar.
The Eid we are celebrating right now is Eid al-Adha.
It just so happened this year that the National Day was very close to Eid al-Adha but they are two entirely different things and not to be confused with each other...
