Tickle Question regarding Smart Drive

You are driving on Corniche at 80 - 100 km/h, and you see the pesdestrian walking and want to cross the street. your reaction is to break to stop, how many meters did you think you can actually stop and not hit the pedestrian at 80 - 100km/h????

Be aware that the stopping range with and without ABS on dry road is almost same. With ABS the stopping is around 30% shorter on wet or slippery road. In all cases when brakes are with ABS you have control of the steering.

when you come to think of it, who would actually be able to calculate on the spot wether or not the pedestrian is with in the 170m range if your driving a saloon?

I say: just be cautious, and dont take the risk

worse case scenerio, dont slam the brakes (unless youve got abs) and do your best to control the car

(to all you parents, let your kids play video games, its more or less a simulation of different scenerios)

samiko and QS you two give the answer.. many of us speeding over 80km/h and think that we can just stop 3 - 5 meters away from the stop object. and this totally wrong. we all should aware of this safey driving. i was waiting for someone actually said it 3 - 10 meters, but nobody else answer it and QS already give full physic and math calculation answer.

I have Smart driving course awhile back and will try to get the copy of the slide show material for ours info.

Note that 50mph=80kph

Dry road

Reaction - 55ft

Braking - 137ft

Total Stopping Distance - 192ft

192 Feet=58.5 meters (1ft=0.3048m)

FOR YOU and company: That’s why they invented “mobile radars”, which are installed in the car, innocently parked on the side of the road…lol…

Here Night time driving is more dangerous .....and fast.....no traffic you see.....

Once had to stand on my breaks inside Civil Defence Round About to let a  Landcruiser pass  at approx 100k. Never saw him come, only saw his tail lights. I survived because my co-passenger warned me....this at 12 midnight.

qatarisun ....you copy pasted...lol from some website...sure cause it talks about 80km as if its very fast.

Here its usual to approach the R/about at 100km+ and cross the last 100m mark at 90kmph (you also refer to Miles per hour...ha ha caught you)..and break at the last 50m or so.

This reminds me about the RedBull avertisment on 97.5 FM. Its a good avdt but says "you are driving at 80Kmph...which is over the speed limit" and "Red Bull gives you wings".....Whereas 80 to 120 is the speed limit so the advertisment is quite redundant here.

IF he/she isnt crossing the road at the wrong spot then there's no need to break in the first place.

you won't win anything for running the pesdestrian over...

...by the way, it was not even mentioned that he/she was crossing the road at the wrong spot..lol...

so you better drive max 49 mph and break on time!

...Your low beam headlights will allow you to spot an object on the road about 160 feet (48-49 meter) ahead of your vehicle. Most drivers need about 1.5 seconds to react.

At 30mph, the margin of safety is narrower, but if you're watching the road you can still stop in time.

At 40mph, you'd better use your high beams when you can. While you may be able to see highly reflective objects for quite a distance, dark objects like common road hazards, animals on the roadway, etc. will be a BIG problem with just your low beams to help you.

At 50mph, braking alone takes 158 feet of the 160 feet (48-49 meter) illuminated by your low beams! No time to "react" at all!

Well, at 60mph low beams certainly aren't enough, are they?

At 70mph, if you're really fast you might be able to get to your foot to the brake before impact...

What can we say? At 80mph you only have time to think about braking. Your foot will probably still be on the accelerator pedal at impact.

so again DO NOT DRIVE  80mph , specially on the Corniche!!

Question should be tricky rather than confusing. It was not brain stroming thing. The question was toppled by so many counter questions which reflects that it was asked in weak phrases.

I say you run the bugger over, coz he's supposed to be crossing the street at the required pedestrian crossing after all cars have come to a halt on seeing the red light. Secondly you cant be doing that speed on corniche road so anyways your gonna be in trouble for speeding..so just run him over...:) what do i win for my answer?

I'm assuming that means its dry then.

The stopping distance as a rule of thumb is about 600m including thinking time (I think, its been about 13 years since I passed my test)

Obviously, it depends on the car and the individual's reactions, but I think 600m is about right.

btw, I'm in Dubai now, not the UK.
