Life in Qatar for a single guy..

By hamster

Hello everyone, just had a call from an agency to see if I'd be interested in a position in Qatar.

I work in Finance and it's with one of the big Oil and Gas companies.

I've told them they can send on my details but while they are doing that I thought I better try and find out a bit more about Qatar.

I'm a 27 year old single guy from the UK, how would I find Qatar as a place to live and work?

Pretty general question at moment I know.

Thanks

I'M MOVING TO QATAR IN THE SUMMER FOR A TEACHING JOB AND REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. THE RIGHT KIND OF PERSON CAN LIVE ANYWHERE, MATE, AND IT BEATS THE WEATHER HERE. I'M FROM THE NORTH EAST AND IT'S SNOWING. IT JUST AIN'T RIGHT!

Sounds eh interesting, can't say I know anything about it but then that's why I work in Finance and not Medicine.... lol

Good luck.

"

He's a Professor, they are always a strange bunch, well from experience anyway."

--> AMEN TO THAT! LOL

It's Biochem, so it's about DNA replication, transcription, translating RNA into proteins, all the mechanisms, co-factors and enzymes used....fun stuff!! *starts looking for a sharp object to end this torture!*

It's been a long day at work, I read the comment as if he'd be saying bad things about us.

He's a Professor, they are always a strange bunch, well from experience anyway.

Good luck with the exam, what's it on?!

Oh no hamster, he didn't say anything about the Scots. It's just that his actions and attitude is...err...let's just say not very professional. I have to take his exam tomorrow so I really REALLY hope he's not a member of QL reading this right now! lol

Tell your Scottish professor he shouldn't be telling lies, we're a great bunch, well us guys from the countryside certainly are.

As for the rest, sounds good to me, experiencing a new culture is a big part of it for me. Dating.... I have enough trouble with women here, never mind anywhere else.

I think Alexa should be on the Qatar Welcoming Committee, she'll make EVERYONE want to come here!! haha

Hamster, speaking of Scots...errr...I have a Scottish professor, and well...hmmm...let's just say he doesn't give u guys a good name so u better get here and clear it out! lol

If ur looking for experiencing a new culture, then Doha is a good place to start. Although it's not the best city in the world, it's not the worst either. And although it's not as busy and exciting as Paris or Munich, it can be alot of fun. It has good people (biggest example is QL...love u guys! *GROUP HUG*) and with the right crowd u'll have a blast.

As far as activities go, there are all kinds of sports and classes. Night scene, there are bars and parties happening often. Dating, it's also common although more discreet than UK (i.e. kissing in public, living together, etc). Living costs, hopefully u'll be provided with housing cause rents are a nightmare.

If u like travelling then Qatar is a good spot to be cause it's easier to travel to all parts of Asia and the Middle East from here.

Hope this helped :)

Spicemom - Thanks - I'm not far from the warm glow of Oil and Gas over here so I'm sure I'd fit right in over in Qatar...

Everyone else - thanks for the info, I reckon Qatar may be a good option if I get the chance. My brother will be in Dubai so can always go visit as well.

Hi everyone !

I'm from Croatia and i'm also coming to work in Doha next week, but  i'm lucky to at least have people from my company already there.

Never the less, i'm wondering where i can meet people from europe in Doha, where do they go out... restaurants, bar's, night life...etc...

Thanks

I'd obviously rather stay in Doha, would depend on what the offer of housing was from my employer.

I'm a pretty easy going guy so I reckon I could fit in most place, you're right though us Scots are a friendly bunch.

I assume you would be living in Doha and the Drive everyday would be approx 3 hours.  Qatar is definetly better for Families, But a guy from Scotland would always fit in..

I'm from a small place in Central Scotland so comparing Qatar to London isn't going to happen.

As for where I'd be based, I'm guessing Ras Laffan...

I've always wanted to live and work abroad so considering this seriously, my brother is relocating to Dubai next week as well.

never compare Doha with London otherwise you will pack up and get in the next flight back to the UK.

Take it as a challenge and experience.

Thats all i can say.

Probably anybody else can add in?

The only way life would be bearable would be for you to have a network of friends alrready here. Otherwise, with long working hours, you will end up spending lots of time on your own.
