What things need to be improved?
By learn.n.earn •
besing a memeber of Qatar Society, can you suggest what things that we (locals & expatriates) need to improve to give Qatar a better image?
Please suggest separately for locals and for expatriates...
Thanks.

I really like your idea.
If you look at most successful people they all have a mentor. When it comes to understanding a new culture or religion the mentor can be a buddy of the same age. It will really work. If you look at people's behaviour, one will not talk bad about alcoholics if one of their close family member is an alcoholic. Same way one would take the effort to understand a new culture and religion if his buddy is from that culture/religion. It is such a simple but really powerful idea.
My b*tching is about people preaching that my culture is better, so on and so forth.
"Life is like a bicycle, if it's too easy - you're probably going down :)"
the way you started in this topic, i expected something thoughtful from you... i m not disappointed... you seem a good musician.
can you explain a bit about "qatarbuudy ", how one should go about it?
i dont thin that i will have a problem to try it... change, to me is something constant, the only thing.
When you're through changing, you're through.
Nobody should be talking about one culture being better than the other. Culture is an evolution that is influenced by lots of factors - climate, available resources, prevailing thought etc. And changes happen in cycles. Culture is what is present. The west was so deprived of anything that can be called culture only a few thousand years ago. Nobody should forget that. But that was the west's culture, at that time.
In one of the most popular jaunts, Mahatma Gandhi was asked by a journalist the following question:
Reporter: “Mr. Gandhi, what do you think of Western civilization?”
Gandhi: “I think it would be a good idea!”
So please all of you stop telling that your sh*t smells worser than mine. Everyone likes the smell of their own sh*t.

sorry to say that, but i belive the main problem here in qatar that the Qataris ppl themself
- go to any place where ppl stay at queue and the exept the Qataris
- The traffic law didn't follow by Qataris themself
- if u had accedent with Qatari and it was his mistake the police wil treat you as criminal and they will respect the Qatari so they encourage them to do it again
- most of policmen here very aggrisave and not helpfull nor friendly with expats
- if the Qataris search for work and said they should have priority to have job why they don't work as labour or maids, why they refuse that job even in europe you can find french labours & spanish maids ....etc and i don't belive the the qataris is much better than these countries
- Qataris drive in so crazy way and so speedily for what i don't know what is the important thing they want to catch it even they go to there work late and they leave early
in other hand
expats should search for another country, where they can find respection and equality
dont change Alexa....your right it was uncalled for
well said Alexa....
well kingsley..its not tradition...
And you speak on behalf of all these women???
Why don't you try to change your tradition.I believe that in muslim's,a woman MUST cover her body even the smallest part of her,But it is not at ease for them for sure, isn't so soffocating to them?!?why don't just unmarried women use this way,and not the married or old ones..Married women are already taken and i think, nobody will attempt to court them...
in my "4th posting" i wrote as :
when I say that Qatri culture is one of the better (I didnt say 'best' cause I think there are things that can be done even better), I didnt mean that others are 'bad'... it might be that others are not as good as whtat I think about Qatar culture.
so it was the same thing as you telling that milk chocolates is better than dark chocolate...
may be i need to improve my writing skills a bit.
i really would love to have your suggestions for improvement for locals and expatriates... i am sure it will help many... please write about it, will you?
regards.

i am sorry... but if i continued responding about "best" and "preferred choice" (i wonder what is meant by "preferred choice"...isnt it "best" one in someone's opinion)... it would not be the topic that i started with my initial posting... we are divereted... can we focus on initial posting please?
and again... i am not local... i am not qatari...
regards,
When you're through changing, you're through.
theres a difference between preferring to be part of a particular culture and thinking one culture is better than others. The culture you choose is better for "you"....doesnt make it the best....
alexa...you prefer your culture... for what? (if you dont think it better than others?)... (i am not trying to be personal... i am asking to elobirate my opinion..nothing offensive please)
i think it is human nature to be the best, to have the best... whether it is about the materialistic things or otherwise...
i dont have problem in going along people who oppose my opinion (is a way of learning to me)... but i prefer it to be logical...
you can live with what you beleive in, i am not (and i will not) question anyone's right to chose best for oneself.
regards,

May be I am biased (and every one is)... when we make comparison about culture or anything like that... we always think that there are few things better in one culture (though biased) than other... if this is not the case then there would not been many cultures.
having said that... when I say that Qatri culture is one of the better (I didnt say 'best' cause I think there are things that can be done even better), I didnt mean that others are 'bad'... it might be that others are not as good as whtat I think about Qatar culture.
if we believe that all cultures are good... i dont think it logical
if we say that all cultures are good... i dont think it true as well because in such cases people would had adopted other cultures without any fuzz.
about my posting, I only meant that Qatar has some very good cultural values and the new generation should follow it. they should...
and last but not least...Alexa... I am not Qatri. I only work here... for last few years only.
I know that I can never be good enough to explain enough that you will agree to my statement...would you?
R egards,
When you're through changing, you're through.
For locals:
Lose the 'not wearing a thobe, you're not Qatari' mentality.
Less racial discrimination.
Social acceptence of globalization
Create an open market
For expats:
Respect culture
Try to blend in with society in a positive manner.
Wish they'd try to meet more Qatari's rather than stay in various groups :P
There's a ton but those are a few in the 10 seconds it took in my mind.

I agree Alexa , i dont think any one culture is better than another...It is very wrong to assume it....
Maybe a re-read of the rules of the road!
Alexa, when I say better culture, I mean it. You should not take it for those who are not following.
In case your eye-brows are still raised, please meet either the older Qatari or... study their history and social values.
I hope you will agree...
Regards

For Expatriates:
--------------------
1- They should understand local norms and should respect them (I understand that most do it, but it can be improved further)
2- One should avoid stereo-typing, if something goes wrong... (I feel it is bit habitual type of act)
For Locals:
-------------
1- I feel that some locals are losing/ignoring their culture. Being one of better cultures, I think they should follow it.
2- Equal rights for expatriates... seems something hard-to-digest for some locals. It needs some improvement.
In case I think of some more, I will share for sure.
