Tipping - Revisited
Let me ask about the question of tipping in restaurants and elsewhere again. It's been asked before in this forum, but I'd like to clarify the situation.
Earlier, forum members said that, generally, tipping in Qatar is not done. However, people said sometimes extra money could be left. People said that in expensive eating places a service charge (plus tax) is automatically added to the bill. Therefore, you don't have to leave anything. However, are you sure that service staffs in those places still don't look for an added gratuity from their well-to-do customers?
And what about inexpensive Arab, Indian and similar restaurants? Places where you can eat a sandwich with tea or coffee for about one riyal? No service charge will be added in those places, right? Do the waiters in those places expect - or hope for - a tip?
If they don't expect one and you leave it, they might be insulted (especially if they think it isn't enough!). Similarly, if they like tips and you don't leave one, they won't be happy to see you if you return to eat there.
And finally, what about tipping other people in Qatar? Do you ever tip people like servicemen in garages, or home repairmen, or others?
What do Qataris do regarding tipping?
Hi,
Tipping's more personal, I usually tip karwa taxi drivers and those helpers in malls in food countr who help me remove trashes, etc.
Think2
Tipping is not necessary but many do to be kind and if they get good service.
2-5 QR is enough

here in doha, i always make sure to leave at least 10riyals whether i eat at restaurant or even coffeeshops. having the knowledge that the servers only earn QR900 to QR1,200 per month would definitely drive you to share.
i agree with nadt.., few riyals will not affect our budget but will certainly have impact on the servers.
I know a few who do the same as yourself, and they're not very rich. They take it upon themselves to tip the hard workers at stores, gas station, down the street to street cleaners, house cleaners, airport, car wash...and more
This should not prevent regular ( monthly) help to support someone's education or kids' raising, medicine purchase, starting a small business and self support....and more.
Thanks
Salaam
10 percent in restuarant and 3-5 ryals for delivery people, i believe it to be a personal thing, and not a cultural thing, so regardless if qataris do tip or they dont, who cares, if you are happy with the service, then show some generosity ;)
I also tip when i get a good service and have tipped at the petrol station the smile/pleasure on their face i see when they see an extra riyal is worth it

here in Doha. So many people are living on so little, and they are quick to carry my groceries to my car etc etc.. I even tip the guy who puts petrol in my car. He's outside in the sun all day and I am sitting comfortably in my air conditioned vehicle
Agree Novi...tip when you hare happy with the service..and if you can afford it tip all those people who are in low paid jobs, a few riyals doesnt make a difference to you but it helps people who work hard and get paid very low here...
i tip when i am happy with the service !!!
Geez, not this again!
Some people tip all the time. Some people never tip. Some people tip according to the service they receive. Some people take into account whether a service charge has already been added.
So make up your mind and do what ever you want.
