Irish Pub in Sheraton

andrea
By andrea

There is a new happening place in doha called Irish Pub which is located inside sheraton hotel.  a lot of people are saying its a happening place and everyone can enter.  However a friend of mine recently informed me that this place is selecting certain nationalities.  This friend of mine wanted to enter Irish Pub with his Filipina girlfrienda and was stopped at the door and informed him that its only for membership. This is the first time my friend heard of this membership thing and all of his friends who are not members of the said pub have entered Irish Pub before without membership.  This friend of mine asked if he could speak to the F & B manager of Sheraton.  He was able to talk to the F & B manager who was a British guy, about the matter and guess what the manager told my friend..He informed him that Irish Pub does not accept Filipinos inside.  My friend was so surprised that this is the first time he encountered a racial discrimination in a social place. This is not done anymore in any westernized country.  He was aghast at what the F & B manager told him. He even told my friend that Filipinos can go to the Mezzanine club but not this pub.

Im just wondering if racial discrimination still do exist in this century and in doha.  this country have welcomed diverse cultures and races and its a wonder why Sheraton Hotel would discriminate certain nationalities.  This is a five-star hotel and has established its reputation for many years.  Is this the kind of reputation Sheraton Hotel would want to have?  If so, they should post in their lobby entrance, "No Filipinos Allowed Here", to give a clear message to everyone that their hotel is discriminating certain races.

Irish Harp, This place is a dump. I would rather die than go and see that British Manager's ugly face on my day off. If I ever see that man on the street I would run him with my truck twice. As to those stinky bouncers, chill out fatsos.. you are door men getting paid 2600 each, which is about half the price of my cheapest Tie. You live your life to develop the skill of flexing your man-boobs and looking tough.

It amazes me that the oldest Hotel in Qatar would employ that class of low life individuals.

This place has nothing to do with Irish pubs, beside the word Irish in its name.

During the summer I enjoyd and spent most of my Thursday evening in the Irish Harp. I had no problem during the summer getting in with male friend. As of recent the problem which has been highlighted in this Thread is re-appearing again. Even with my british accent I have been turned saying that couples only.

According to the Articles of the Constitution of Qatar, Clause 35, it states: "All people are equal before the law. There shall be no discrimination on account of sex, origin, language, or religion." That more or less sums it up.

You can read the whole constitution here: http://www.constitution.org/cons/qatar/constit_2003.htm

It happens everywhere. Again while it is a puplic place it is not owned by the puplic it's privatley owned and therefore managment has the right to refuse entry. Most pubs and clubs will set a cap on how many singles they will let in to avoid the crowd becoming too one sided it just seems to me that here they will also set that cap on nationality as well. In sydney try going to a gay bar after 10pm and as a straight person regardless of gender, regardless of color, regardless of nationality and you will be refused entry.

Friends and I visited, all expatriates, they allowed the "Western" Nationalities in and stopped my hubby ' cause he looks "Asian", when questioned, the rude response " we do not allow single men in", stangely enough, my husband's colleague was allowed entry & he was alone and hubby was in fact in the company of a female friend, so he was not a "singly Man". I was upset at the blatant discrimination, so took it up with the Manager of the Sheraton, guess what? It took one week & a whole lot of persistance, before I got the courtesy of a brief response. Well, to say the least, I have notified the relevant Regulatory Authority, to launch an investigation. I guess they messed with wrong people.I suggest you address a formal complaint to the Manager & seek an apology as this kind of conduct is unacceptable.

The only thing its the prices still a little bit up.

that someone can say straight that the place is not accepting some specific nationalities. I would rather understand darksideofthemoon, who sais, discrimination could be veiled, hidden… I go to IH pretty often and I see there all the spectrum of different nationalities… So, I am not sure about this particular case…

and again, as I have said, the owner of ANY property in the world (and not only in Canada, darksideofthemoon) might ban any person, he/she wants to ban..  it’s well known, even if the “uninvited visitor”, which has intruded on someone's territory “without the invitation”, got shot, most likely the shooter will be  justified.

so don't look for the roots of this particular case, just accept it and go have fun to any other place.. there are a lot of them, Hamdullillah!

well guys if u've been reading my article very carefully i would reiterate that the manager said that the pub DOES NOT ACCEPT Filipinos.. im not talking here about the way they were dressed..The manager actually singled out the "Filipinos" in his statement.  If u r being selective on people entering the pub then u have to be clear on that and in this case the manager was really clear about it...

Qatarisun - yes they are allowed to ban people from their property in Canada, BUT and I stress BUT, they have to prove it wasn't for racist reasons. Don't delude yourself into thinking that other countries in the world can be openly racist and reject people simply based on race, obviously it does happen, but they will try and find a fake reason as to why they are rejecting you, unlike in Qatar where they will tell you straight up get lost because you're from ____.

I have been places where they are so full, it exceeds the fire rules.Whatever!!!!  I always have a good time.

By Gumby• 7 Apr 2008 05:38

THey have very particular clothing rules that are open for interpretation depending on the  mood of the bouncer.  Had a female friend who was dressed very swankily in a matching shawl/tam combination-and no, she didn't look like a "professioinal".  Bouncer denied entry because no "hats" were allowed.  Sure that the rule was put in place for greasy baseball caps and to have an out to stop locals in gutras, he just didn't have the experience to judge what was appropriate.  She took her tam off and was allowed entry-no problem.

I'd be extremely surprised if there was any sort of ban on any nationality, but perhaps on individuals dressed or acting a certain way, and perhaps they often appear to be of a certain nationality.

And it's the most ridiculous allegation I've heard for a while...

Been to IRISH HARP on several occassions and no one turned me away. i find the place OKEY...except for a lot of smoke (they need to improve ventilation/exhaust system) but i'm a smoker , so no problem.

ANDREA, maybe your lady friends weren't properly attired for the place. Most of the people I see there are in their smart casuals. Sometimes, some folks forget that it's inside a hotel and unlike other venues, you could go in wearing jeans, rubber shoes and tees.

GARVEY's ??? I don't know...been there too. I wasn't turned away. I don't know about the others but I did not experience that (YET), nor want to experience it at all...

it is IRISH HARP!!!it's not "IRISH PUB". if you don't know what does HARP mean, i suggest to check it in dictionary... may be it will make some difference for you.

ringohiqups, what i said was: it is the OWNERS' right to allow the person in their property or not!! and it has nothing to do with the nationality! In my example with the Toronto's boutique both - onwer and client- were pure white Anglican Canadians. It didn’t stop one of these Canadians to ban another Canadian and do not let him entering her PROPERTY. Is that also discrimination?

..and I expressed the same thoughts with Victoria: not nationality but the look and the way of acting are decisive factors

The name of the place means a lot to me. Iris Pub. seems like  irish thing, irish touch, some thing irish. To comment on this... i'm a bar/club fanatic in Manila. i belong to what they call 'konyo' thing which is a group of yuppies 'young professional' with a wealthy lifestyle. when i can here in Doha, i never think that descrimination ruled. im one yr & 2 mos. now and i found this place not really appreciating. from the policies and  gov't procedures, its all for small people. even the penalties and everything, very disgraceful. no wonder why Qatar didn't manage or won the bidding for Olympic hosting by 2016. first, their languange. second, their culture. third, the way they handle people. one good example is the expatriates people. forth, unfair ruling. fifth, descrimination. sixth, no enough venues for the olympic event. how many gyms u have here in Doha? i've been in saudi arabi and we're playing volleyball indoor, inside the gym. here'? where? in al sadd stadium? where else? and much more.... so with this Irish Pub issue, forget it. better create a social gatherings at home. u'll be more comfortable and more safer than going out. goodluck to all! and good luck to Irish Pub.

and - yes - it is a property owner's right to accept whoever they want and do not accept whoever they don't! It happens everywhere. I knew one Lady in Toronto, the owner of some boutique. Once she had some small argument with one of the clients. And she decided not to accept this client in her boutique anymore. She informed about it this client. Both of them (the owner and the client) know that if next time this client tries to enter this boutique without owner’s permission, the owner has rights to call the police. This is a property issue. It’s well known.

it is called IRISH HARP for your information..this is first.

Second, it's not really NEW place...

Third, I have seen a lot of DECENT asian girls inside on Irish Harp, not sure what exactly nationalities they are though…

Fourth.. well... I might sound really nasty now, but other day i was shocked in Rydges when I turned my head and saw three girls, that just walked into the bar (and it was around 2 am already, just before closing!!), which were dressed up and acting in a way that doesn't leave any doubts regarding their "profession"… also I am not going to emphasize on their nationalities…

I think you can make a conclusion of what I have said. Decent people are welcomed anywhere, regarding their nationality…
